Canadian independence is a weird one to pin down compared to other former territories. It gained autonomy in 1931 which required them to still partake in Britain's wars (WW2, Vietnam, etc) but Britain couldn't get involved in their politics. Newfoundland had gave up its autonomy in 1934 due to poor financial planning and the need for subsidies from Britain to pay it off their debt, it eventually joined Canada in 1949. But the Constitution of Canada wasn't drafted till 1982 which gave them full independence which is where they stand today.
It's not fully independant. The Governor General literally stands in for The Crown in our federal government and has a veto power (that they never use, but still could).

I want to chime in here, and say that Charles' family isn't originally English, they only made themselves English during the First World War by changing their house's name so that they would never be associated to Kaiser Wilhelm II - George VI's Cousin. Meaning England hasn't really been ruled by true Englishmen until then. Before George VI made the English House of Windsor, England was ruled by Welshmen - i.e. the Tudors, Scots - James VI, Charles I and II, and Germans - notably George I, II, and III of Hanover - in that following order.
