- n todays episode we will focus on the rising number of single mothers in India . According to the 'Progress of the World's Women 2019-2020' report by United Nations Women, an estimated 4.5 percent of all Indian households which means that - 13 million households are are run by single mothers. What are the factors contributing to this change in the society, what are the problems faced by single mothers in india and the around the globe , where are the family and society structures heading to , is it about the women's choices , do we still say that patriarchy is the norm of the society , what are the government and civil society intiatives to provide a saftey net for single mothers.

It's not about man or woman it's about good or bad person. This problem should be studied as gender neutral.

How society, Law , media treat Single fathers the guy correctly explained . Single Fathers in audience , single mothers are in dias . That's the real fact every where. The sacrifice a father do for their child is never recornised and will be in future also.
I think Women r becoming single mother bcz in Indian society most of the responsibility is on Females,they don't find their partners r equally responsible,loyal and caring..moreover men r Egoistic, aggressive n controlling.so torturing herselves in their relationship, they're choosing to be single bcz they r financially independent these days.So I Respect them.

Concept of a ' Good Marriage' has really lost its charm somewhere in today's generation .
This is happening because of following reasons:
1.More girls have become self dependent which is a good thing , most mens already are .
2. Being Independent doesn't make girls polite, it only increase s their ego. As she wants to live life on her own terms and not ready to compromise.
3. While getting married we only focus on the girl as how is she ? How she looks ,talk etc. Men Ignore her stubborn and violent nature and repent later. We never check hows her mother . Who is ruling in her family? Mother or father ?
5. If a family is ruled by her mother,this girl will also try to rule in your family come what may.
7. Mother and daughter are aware that Indian law mostly favours women and voice of a man is unheard . Majority of married mens are suffering even if they are rich , well mannered, polite and innocent . The only problem with those mens are that they are not puppet of her wife .Hence , the revenge is taken by wives on the say of her mother , lawyer etc .
8 .The weapons for revenge are , 498 a ( dowry), Domestic violence , false marital rape , false rape blame on husband's father/relatives . Dowry demand by husband's parents even sisters or brothers names are included .The irony is even if men is totally innocent he has to face the police and courts multiple times which is very disappointing and depressing .
9 . Even if you would choose contested divorce ,you have to give almost 50 percent of your savings and property. In case of mutual divorce ,still you need to pay huge alimony .
10. If you have a child , custody will be given to mother and rare option of shared parenting.
Genrally we feel that this won't happen to us. But if you are not aware with the type of family you are going to marry with ,you might be in troule.
Marriage must not be a Goal unless you find a ' Right Girl' & 'Right Family' .
I will not supprt single parenting.
Scocity is biased towards men.
Laws are biased towards men.
In many cases gender biased laws are used against men for extortion and ladies do emotionally black mailing by getting child custody .
Only in trending is women's issues.

The issue with the Indian family system is that the whole responsibility of parenting is forced upon woman even though the husband is present....i think children should be thought gender parity right since the childhood so that when they grow as adults they will respect other gender and appreariate the efforts their partners are making...
And think over it , we have family system , a young girl with child have good chances to get support from family members as she is part of family . Now think of a teen of America who is pregnant with a baby but now her bf does not want to take responsibility for this kid. And this is quite common .Is this doing good for any society ? A family system is actually developed for care and betterment of women , unfortunately there are cases which nobody wants to have but still the system can be made to work.

Mam it is the responsibility of both wife and husband to manage house.
Most of the men thinks it's only the duty of wife. And the lady tolerate many things without saying a ooffsss, Caz of her love towards family, society, financial and many other causes.

Excellent discussion!!! What I think there should be no single mother or single father.....here is a Single Parent or Single Caretaker of ones child. Both have to face the same difficulties in same or another way.....that's it.

The person claim advocate(lughifing) does not know law crpc125, dv act ? Where men can't claim miant even for child forget for himself? Does he does not know , if men does not have money/jobless , still he have to pay maint. Does the same logic apply for women ? The role of provider with men as per law , irrespective child with father or mother , the same is not for women. That is fact , whcih as advocate he does not accept the truth.
I totally agree with what the DU student has said. In my own case, I got married to an IITan and my in laws are both doctors. But they are so narrow minded and want to keep the entire decision making power to themselves. They didn't even allow me the right to decide the name of my son whom I gave birth to. Their basic point is "this girl has come into our family so she is supposed to adjust to our lifestyle. Neither do we nor our son needs to adjust in any way, whatsoever".

With due respect, I disagree with u ma'am. Maybe women don't need any men, but a child definitely needs a father figure or a male impact. And BTW, majority of kids raised by single moms turn out to be criminals and that's a fact. No doubt mother is most important for kid, but father's contribution can't be neglected too
Shree 420 My husband (now ex) never cared about the child from the time I was pregnant. He even battered me and threw me out of the house late at night under the influence of alcohol when I was 7months pregnant. He didn’t even come to see his own child in the hospital. Do you really think having such a father would be a good influence on the child? My baby is currently 5months old and has never seen his father. Now because there is a dependent and I’m the only provider, I need to join back my work in two weeks even though my baby is still on breastfeed. Tomorrow the society will judge me for putting a 6month old child in a crèche. I’ll be called various names. But I know that’s the best decision at the moment for my child.
Also I have seen so many single parents raise disciplined children.

And I've no intention to hurt ur feelings but in most cases the children raised my single parent are disciplined when they r raised by single dad and end up in jails or r ill mannered , drug addict etc when raised by single mom. Statistics say so........ And by mentioning this, I still hope for the bright future of u and ur child. Goodluck
we as a society must accept the change, do not give corner to child of single parents, working women is more respectable, in pune i found many women were staying with their child alone, they are working, taking independent decision and staying alone, living freely as per wish. divorce or separation in parents is part of life but as a society we must keep respect to each and every person.

Fathers have to up-bring child , pay maint to wife too . CRP125, Dv act men can't claim maint. Job-loss is not a ground for men to deny maint, but job loss is a ground for women to get maint. Such unfair law must be made gender neutral. In adition law like 498a, child custody law is promoted for father less child society.

I want that you must a discuss about why the case of divorce and single parent is more common in urban areas than in rural areas.
In fact we are forgetting and ignoring our pious culture and fastlt accepting western culture .

Couples are unhappy in rural areas as well, its just that “log kya kahenge” is the reason why they don’t opt for divorce. Its a “shame” for the girl’s entire family if she divorces. Also getting a divorced woman remarried is impossible in rural areas. Parents force their own daughters to continue in an abusive relationship.
Also reasons for separation are different in rural areas. One major reason being dowry. They don’t necessarily register their marriages, so they don’t have to divorce. So its just separation incase marriage wasn’t registered. Hence divorce rates are low there.
Once upon a time the situation was similar in the Western countries as well, until women’s revolution took place (school history). For the first time women could vote, had right to education, could take up jobs, polygamy was abolished, etc. Women started openly expressing their oppression.

Research says that , single mothers breed criminals. Often children are the victims of failed marriages. Although not all children end up doing crime and being put behind bar but majority does. Failed marriage , divorce and separation of his/her parents definitely have psychological impact on the children's psyche.
