Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers - Awfully Good Or Just Awful?

- With David Gordon Green’s supposed franchise finale Halloween Ends proving to be one of the most divisive sequels to John Carpenter’s horror classic to date, Awfully Good Movies is spending the spooky season with the fifth Michael Myers installment from 1989: Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers!
Only one year after Halloween 4 ended with The Shape getting shot down a mining shaft and his niece Jamie slicing up her stepmom, producer Moustapha Akkad rushed another film into production that would answer every burning question that you-BWAHAHA, I’m just kidding, Halloween 5 basically pretends that Jamie Lloyd inheriting her uncle’s evil never happened. Instead, Danielle Harris spends much of the movie mute from trauma inside a children’s hospital where she discovers a psychic bond with her newly reawakened uncle, while Donald Pleasance returning as Dr. Loomis tries to get her to tell him where Michael is going to strike next.
Unfortunately, this doesn’t save Jamie’s sister Rachel from the last film from meeting her end 20 minutes in (spoiler alert?). So the central adult we’ve got to “root” for now is Rachel’s annoying housemate Tina Williams, probably the most ill-fitting comic relief character to hit a sequel since Richard Pryor in Superman III. Will Tina’s valley girl schtick ruin this franchise faster than you can say “trick or treat”? Will the increasingly psychotic Loomis be able to use Jamie’s psychic bond to defeat Michael’s evil for good? And will any of this matter after the franchise reboots its story several hundred times within the next couple of decades?
So many questions, so many underwhelming sequels that’ll fail to answer them. Oh, and one more question: Is it too late to turn this back into an anthology series like John Carpenter wanted to do in the first place? Five more days till Halloween…SILVER SHAMROCK!

RIP Donald Pleasance! We need actors of his caliber these days!
We'll never have another Donald Pleasance. RIP never forgotten
Yes he was dedicated to the Halloween franchise.
He was the series not woke Curtis
@@gkroll8467 agreed
Yes
The real slasher is 1989. That year killed Jason, Michael, and Freddy with one stab.
And they say Batman doesn’t kill.
Halloween 5 was best out of the three sequels of that year.
The "Goddamn you, cookie woman." "Aaahhh!!!" had me DED😂😂
Too bad they didn't stick with the alternate opening with Dr Death being the one who found Michael instead of the hermit. Him bring the one to give Michael the Thorn symbol as a way to awaken him using voodoo magic makes more sense than the mess they tried to make sense of in the next movie. But of course the producers thought dark magic didn't gel with the franchise (yet they eventually went with dark magic anyway) and they wanted to make Michael's first victim more sympathetic
Dark magic? Are they serious?
"JESSE REVIEWS TONIGHT!"
Mr. Shade reviewing an awfully good horror movie is a Fun Sized Halloween treat.
It’s not a new house. It’s the Carruther’s house from the last movie. Their parents are already out of town, leaving the house to Rachel and therefore her friend’s for the weekend.
Foster Mother and foster Sister
The people who made this movie didn't even pay attention to part 4
The idiot director directed this movie as if it was a stand alone film and not a continuation of a series. Total incompetent.
I would've loved to see Jamie become the new killer, or at least struggle with the essence of Micheal within. This movie is fine, and Tina has grown on me for her silliness.
At least Ends explored that old concept.
@@anders6326 But did so in the worst way possible
i love a series, novels or comics going indepth exploring Jamie Lloyd's struggling with Michaels evil influence as well as explorig how Michael can evolve and break the cult's hold on him, i prefer the poducer's cut for H6 but I dont like how they treated Jamie and how Rudd semi campy performed an adult Tommy Doyle
This video made my day. Could not stop laughing. Thanks for that. Well done.
Glad you enjoyed it
Thank you dude, always means a million
Naked gun title sequence........genius! Lmao
Since Michael Myers always starts his killing spree every Oct 31st why don't the cops or the national guard do a manhunt the other 364 days of the year? Its common sense people!
Another wonderful review! I enjoyed the irreverence, the skits, the humorous overdubs, and the pacing. Thank you! 🎃
"They're back.... in Halloween form." 😂
That bit with Dr Loomis doing that cackle / scream was awesome 😆
17:37 😅🤣
Love those films aye, 1,2,3,4,5,6, H20, heck even the Busta Rhymes whooping Resurrection. LOL 😝
Happy Halloween 🎃👻
Donald Pleasance is laughing at the new movies.
Yeah this is psycho Dr Loomis in this movie. Shaking Jamie around like a rag doll, also using her as bait. He went full Captain Ahab in this one.
I cant fully hold it against him
Michael has a ongoing body count and Loomis is desperate lol poor guy
Nothing psychotic about any of his behavior. He was forceful, and obsessive, and determined...Not psychotic. As for using her as bait....so long as she was alive, she WAS bait, no matter what Loomis did. But by seizing the reins, he was able to take some autonomy over the when and the where of whatever would transpire. Michael was coming, one way or the other. And at the end of the day, Loomis placed himself between the child and Myers on THREE separate occasions.
@@tgriffin3059 yeah whatever psycho obsessive Behavior he's obviously Captain Ahab and Michael Myers is his white whale
@@grapeshot As I said, he deliberately placed himself between Jamie and the Bogeyman on THREE separate occasions. What, do you think that if he had been more laid back that Michael would have gone away? He tried the more kindly, grandfather approach in 4, and that certainly didn't work. Besides, who the hell is Jamie, anyway? Why should she be treated like some princess? She tore into her foster mom with a big pair of scissors. I think she was quite fortunate to have Loomis on her side. Loomis is the greatest hero in the realm of horror.
@@tgriffin3059 and like I said he's Captain Ahab and Michael Myers is his white whale
Bad as this film is, i will admit it has warmed up on me overtime, if because of the third act being so dour and grim. (Like Michael stalking Jamie after the car crash is kind of freaky)
And then there's TINA 🙄 although this movie did come out when I was in high school. And I do remember girls dressing and acting just like her.
" In his Rudy Giuliani mask".
Amazing
I like the Thorn trilogy, is it crap? yes... Is it interesting? yes... Are there good ideas here? yes.. Is the execution mostly terrible? yes.
With a well thought out plan, I really think the Thorn idea could have gone somewhere. It could have moved Michael from pure slasher to supernatural as an organic maneuver.
It's better than anything that has happened since (apart from H20 which was fun as fuck).
It thorn triology started to tank once Halloween 5 happened, Halloween 4 did give Michael the cult but never outright mentioned it, Halloween 5 was where it started. but i didn't explore it in a good way. H6 Really messed it up even further, but speaking of Halloween 5 itself, i don't think its as bad as people say it is, it has its bad moments but i think H5 is better than alot make it out to be.
H20 is a tame Scream clone wearing a halloween skin suit, heck even the score sounds more like Scream, which of course it does since they hired the same composer Marco Beltrami
20:45 I died for like 10 min hahaha
5 isn’t great, but there a lot worse entries out there. The ironically titled Resurrection nearly buried the franchise. RZ’s H2 was particularly awful as well. I don’t know if I can form a view on whether Ends is an abomination or just forgettable at this stage.
You think it was a bit weird that Jamie tried to save Tina and seemed to care more for Tina than her Foster sister who went through hell and nearly died saving her in the previous film, Rachel?
That's not true! It can't be!😢
yeah but I just rationalize it that she is a young child
chidlrens minds are scattered and priorities are all over the place
@@ItsaKindOfMagic86 true
only Loomis was smart enough to figure out Michael's plan to get rid of the cops he knew he couldn't get to Jamie with the whole police force waiting for him. also the unmasked Michael in the original movie was actor Tony Moran who is the brother of Erin Moran "Joanie" from Happy Days )
Dang that Helen Keller insert got me 😆😂
I was just 9 rushing to the theater to see Rachel killed in the first 10 minutes in complete disbelief the entire film... But I still love it and to this day I still watch it every year. I take these over the new any day. And yes I even love his mask in 5🤷 IDGAF
She wouldn't go out so soon and so easily. Not after falling off a two story roof, and running Michael over with a truck!
Bruce Lee Right on!
this was a better watch then the actual movie
When Jamie ran out of the attic, Rachel was gone! She moved!
I rather watch this then Halloween ends lol
Halloween sequels and the remakes suffered from not hiring more competent writers, but i will give credit to movies 4,5,6 for at least attempting to try something different
H20, Ressurection and the RZ movies and this recent trilogy feel like cash grabs just rehashing the slasher premise but upping the gore. The original film wasnt gory, it masters suspence, which is something that the modern horror genre doesnt take the time to care about anymore.
I personally kinda like Halloween 5. It’s not great, but gets waaaaaay more shit than it deserves. It’s certainly flawed, but I can watch it, and glad it exists.
Yes and not political
Actually, it IS great...one of the best films of its' kind ever made...
@@tgriffin3059True. And it feels like a real Halloween movie with the whole Michael stalking his victims and Loomis stalking Michael approach, just like in H1978.
@@valeriebreidenstein8362 Exactly. The central elements are the same.
Loved the quick AVGN clip, and of course another awfully good video!!
16:31 … laughed my a** off. wonderful edit.
It's a classic.. A classic in the slasher category. It's a mixed bag of bad and really good. I wouldn't call it awful. Even 2018 has Halloween 5ish cringe.. The real Dr. Loomis Donald Pleasence and Danielle Harris save the movie. Not only that, Michael Myers is actually scary. The kills are good, he's as unstoppable as fans want him to be. The family bloodline plot was the best way to go for sequels after the original. I like an evolving story, the Thorn tattoo and cult shit with the man in black made Michael even darker and more interesting. It's better than what these new movies came up with.
The laundry shoot scene with Jamie stuck was intense, the farm kills and Michael riding that car around like a boss with Tina wearing her boyfriends mask before cops stopped him are stand out moments.
What made it "awful" ?? Almost anytime he takes his mask off. The tear drop scene is literally the only part I didn't like.. Then I guess him being locked in a cell with his mask still on and the Myers house obviously changed into a castle.
Other than that I wouldnt mind a sequel to Halloween 4 or 5 with Jamie Lloyd back. Keep the Thorn tat though it's nice
It’s sh1t
You say "Michael Myers is actually scary" when this is the movie that literally shows him crying... lol
@@idiot_city5244 Worst scene in the entire series but it's only 3 seconds
Great video. Super funny.
Atleast I can have fun with how bad this one is. There’s not one moment in Ends where I sat back and laughed at how bad it was. It was just a slow, meandering watch that had me checking my watch about 5 minutes into it.
What annoys me more than ANYTHING in this movie. Is the annoying death of Tina. Stabbed in the shoulder. THE SHOULDER!!! Worst case scenario, she won't be playing the violin or baseball or hockey. But dead? No. Maybe if Michael aimed a little lower and a little more to the left, he might have hit a major organ or artery. So...annoying Tina dies from an equally annoying flesh wound. Humans....so fragile...
It happened to Rachel too. I don't believe either of them are truly dead.
Tina's death is the finest murder in the series. Unforgettable...beautifully shot, with incredible investment from the actors involved, and very convincing sound...and a poignant moment, as well, since Tina died to save the child....as for the point of impact, that's absurd...Michael Myers impaled a good sized young man to a wall with a kitchen knife...that guy probably weighed anywhere from 70-100 pounds more than Tina....so even if the knife entered around the shoulder, he could have easily forced it in, hell even dragged it across...he's MICHAEL MYERS...she's a light-framed, slender young girl... who knows, perhaps the camera panned away briefly and there was even a second point of impact...The point is that the girl is dead, and it was one of the most beautifully conceived and executed events in the franchise.
I was good with Mr. Green's Halloween...and Kills.....but Ends is an "end" alright. The one we sometimes call the "nether sphincter." The "brown eye." The "poop shoot." You get the idea. He pulled a "Rian Johnson" and decided to throw away everything that came before it, so he could have a "do-over." A "mulligan." A "redo." You get the idea. I got the feeling that it was less of a squeal and more of a Content Creator Reacts to Online Criticism movie. He should have just made the movie he wanted to because apparently, it was going to piss folks off either way.
Halloween Ends was just a shoddy remake of Christine
I know people hate on Halloween Resurrection a lot, but honestly I enjoy it. I enjoy all of the Halloween movies. I find it's just better to not try to compare the movies and just enjoy them for what they are. I will say I wish Halloween 5 had followed the Jamie Lloyd becoming the killer idea instead, but what we got was still fun. :-)
It’s nowhere near as bad as H5. That’s for sure.
@@catchcan221 Halloween 5 is one of the greatest movies of its' kind ever made.
I wish you did most of these awfully good movies reviews. Jesse you make me laugh every time you put the reviews on there.

Divisive on Halloween ends, I don't think so the only good thing about that movie was Jamie Lee Curtis.
Just awful killing off Rachel 20 minutes into the movie replacing her with Tina was a mistake making jamie mute adding the man in black turning the Myers house to a Gothic mansion all terrible Halloween 5 was just rushed it should have been a 2 year gap after part 4 but they got greedy with it and this is the result
This movie is a clusterf****!

Usually I don’t like to be negative……but it’s just like they got a paper to prepare the script of Halloween 5, and just wrote some stuff so fast and then just went 👍after seeing the script and being done.
Poor Blofeld, never able to kill James Bond. My best friend showed me Halloween 1978 and nafevtge mistake of telling me he was Blofeld, so I turned it into a running gag of James Bond stalking Haddonfield and Blofeld being the only one to stop him. Escape from New York got weird, too.
I’ve liked them all here and there. I’m very partial to 4,5, and 6. I binge watched them on vhs all right before I saw 6 in the theatre. It’s the first one I saw in the theatre l. Also, liked 1,2,3 and H20. Never watched the Rob zombie ones. Kills and Ends were god awful. The first one of the new trilogy was pretty good though. 😊
"Tina Dies Tonight " - Halloween Fans
I will literally never understand the Tina hate. She's annoying? Okay? Most horror characters in slashers in general, but especially the late 80s are flat archetypes with zero characterization. Wendy Kaplan made Tina a three-dimensional character, a teenage girl who might be a little loud, but one who also threw herself in front of a blade to save Jamie. As disappointed as I will always be that Rachel dies so unceremoniously in 5, Tina does deserve better.
I love H5. It’s in my top 4 fave H films. Maybe even top 3. It’s a treat to the franchise! And has my fave movie car of all time in it, my fave mini scream queen and also great fall atmosphere. + the iconic Donald P/ Dr. Loomis 🥃
omg dude that car is so fitting for Michael, I think he enjoyed driving it :)
@@ItsaKindOfMagic86 ditto
None of them dressed like goblins. OH MY GODDDDDD!!!!!!
Please can you mix the voice over higher in the mix in future? Amazing vid as usual though 😆👌🏼
Danielle Harris was so good in these movies. It was the first time we saw Michael’s vulnerability and him without a mask.
As a fan I was delighted that they all got offed. That house would be a sweet house to rent. Multi floored and plenty of room and rooms. I'd take that house and rent it anyway. It's obviously very cheap, as I didn't see any of the occupants living there working, at work, or even mentioning anything about having jobs. So this must be a real cheap rental!
At some point in time Michael Meyers is going to take off his mask and tell Jason Voorhees "No Jason, I'm your father"
This is what I wish the other re-re-review videos from JoBlo would do. I was the exact right age to identify with Jamie’s character and enjoy this movie when it came out, but as an adult it’s just so flawed on a conceptual level. Even with my nostalgia, I don’t hold it in reverence, so your video made me LOL several times. On a side note, I have really enjoyed the latest trilogy for what they are and appreciate them not being made in a rush to market or with DTV budgets. I think it would be interesting to see this timeline explored in an episodic form by watching a young Loomis and/or Sartain ‘s descent into obsession within the hospital/prison.
Who's been messing up everything?
It's been Tina all along
Who's been pulling every dumb thing?

So at the end of 4, nobody checked the hole after blasting michael to make sure he was in there? They just assumed it all went to plan and went home?

Hollween Kills and Ends almost ruin Halloween 2018.
It's still better than Ends. I'm getting annoyed by the "it's different so it's good" viewpoint that people seem to be taking with it.

Rachel being killed off so quick was terrible. But regardless this is 100x better than resurrection. Anything beats the bustah rhymes karate chops. But this has things going for it. I felt this had scarier scenes than part 4. I just watched part 4 the shoutfactory 4k. Whike its a great sequal almost on par to part 2 as there is division on shich sequal is better. Very few jump scares but the ending with jamie still is one for the ages. To me whomever played michael in part 4 did a terrible job. But part 5 i think the kills were better matched effective jump scares and also his stalking scenes were to me very well done. Especially in rachels house.
So there is a guilty pleasure for this
H4 Michael Myers was played by George Wilbur, but i wouldn't say he did a terrible job, i think H20 and resurrection Michael were worse.
Guilty pleasure? How so? Halloween 5 is all about Michael stalking people, and Loomis stalking HIM...THAT'S a Halloween movie...that's EXACTLY what Carpenter did in '78....If you respect that original Halloween premise, no other movie in the series comes as close to replicating that approach...
MICHAEL!
WHAT?!?! 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 9:17
I was in my mid teens and facing my fear of Michael Myers at the time I watched this for the first time and I always wondered why the movie didn't sit right with me for some reason and thought I was the crazy one. Years later, I realize I'm not the crazy one and I'm not the only one who isn't a fan of this movie, despite some of the good elements within the film. Rip Donald Pleasance.
Evil dies last year
I might say it's better than ends...
Wait a minute…….WHEN TF DID MICHAEL LEARN HOW TO DRIVE?!
I do wish they had Jamie take over as the killer...but they still could keep Michael Myers for fans..........just make it a "Who done it" type Mystery with the police and Loomis wondering if Jamie is doing the killing or Michael Myers... when Jamie disappears briefly a murder happens then she is found....later just keep Michael seen roaming around killing a few but other deaths no one is sure who did it.........the ending to part 4 was great seeing Jamie looking like her Uncle after stabing her foster mom.
Only Busta Rhymes can defeat Michael Myers.

I just need to add that Rob Zombie's Michael Myers was somewhat humanized in his scenes as a child. When he was slicing up his pet mice in the sink, killing his school bully in the woods by brutally beating him toq death with a giant stick. And then, on Halloween night, the same child at the same age duct tapped up his abusive stepfather and slits his throat, kills his sister's boyfriend by beating him to death with a baseball bat, and then finding his "real" mask putting it on, and incestually runs his hand up his sister's leg making her think it her boyfriend returning to the room, but then turning around to see her 8 year old little brother was acting like a perv, and when she gets pissed and asks him WTF he is doing, she is violently stabbed and manages to make it all the way to the kitchen until Michael as a boy still, puts her down by finishing the job with a few more violent stabs. So he was a very humanized child. He killed his pet rats, her sister's boyfriend, his stepfather, and his sister. All in brutal and very remorseless fashion. However he does take his baby sister out of her crib to wait for their mother who returns home to find most of her family slaughtered at the hands of this humanized child. I have no idea why he didn't kill the baby sister in the crib and took her outside. Only to return to the same town years later so he could kill her and anyone who gets in his way.

nah, I think H20, Ressurrection, RZ's movies and this new cash grabbing triolgy are charmless and mishandled Michael more so. H20 is a tame Scream clone in a Halloween skinsuit, Ressurrection is just gimmicky. This new trilogy is all about Laurie Strode, and having it all rehash Laurie's trauma once again because we already played that card in H20, just NOPE. I'll take the H1, H2, H3, H4, H5 and the producer's cut of H6 even tho theyre flawed af but they do not lack charm H1 has
