    Employers have the right to reduce their workforces, but there are laws in place limiting the criteria they may consider when deciding who to layoff. Employers cannot consider age, race, gender, disability, pregnancy status, or other criteria that have a "disparate impact" on certain protected classes. Employers may offer severance packages in exchange for employees waiving their right to sue. If you find yourself in a similar situation, it is highly recommended you consult with an employment lawyer before accepting a severance package.
