  • In this video, Joshua Griffin gives three HVAC tips that he would give his own mother. These tips revolve around what homeowners should focus on despite all of the different types of marketing tactics and ratings that are given out by HVAC technicians when they are trying to sell a heating and air system today. Focusing on these three features can save you on money as well as having higher comfort and lower noise levels of the operation of the HVAC system.

I think it's important to strike a balance between new technology, efficiency, useful vs. bells-and-whistles features, reliability and cost. This is a pretty long list of considerations which is why selecting the appropriate system for the application at hand is difficult. All that being said, I think it's fair to say that the newer the technology and the larger the feature set, the more reliability tends to suffer.
Personally, I'm happy to sacrifice features and potential savings on energy usage/cost to get increased reliability and adequate (although not fully optimized) performance. Newer technologies often come with greatly increased first-installed and repair costs. I try to use technologies that have been on the market long enough to have worked out most of the bugs and that have managed to establish a large enough installed presence that finding parts and skilled technicians is easy.
    Take care and God Bless.

So you’re saying you would not overcharge your mother you would not charge $250 for a $30 capacitor?

I installed a heat pump this year and its just amazing how much heat these produce in the winter. I was nervous because I've never had on before, I am sold.. keep up the great videos!!

Very excited for our new inverter heat pump and ductwork we’re getting in the fall. The current single stage and ductwork sucks and is loud. High humidity, uneven cooling, not enough returns. My contractor has the same inverter system at his house and like that his money is where his mouth is. Inverter makes sense in Florida as I don’t always need 3 tons of cooling but I will typically need some sort of cooling throughout the year

Feel free to share the contractor and HVAC system if you’d like? I’m curious 🙂

I think most guys you referenced who are “old school” just don’t understand the technology. And more to the point, if they’re in the trade, they aren’t able to diagnose and fix it.

Would a single stage system still be appropriate for a hot, dry desert climate like Palm Springs? Humidity isn’t an issue and they need to handle 120F max temperatures. The price difference is significant for a more advanced system and repairs are more expensive on more complicated systems with many proprietary components.

RDK AC in Clearwater. He’s doing my ductwork and install in the fall. Honest guy, small family company. If you need new ductwork, Neil at HVAC Designs will design it all for you. Cost me $200 and I just handed over the manual d plans to RDK. Super easy
