      I think your observation about Authority is right on. I realized this while playing the game too. The stats in DE are not necessarily your desires. They are kind of more your senses. Authority senses and is drawn to uses of authority. This is why it’s so good at pointing out even bad uses of authority. It’s because it notices it in all its forms. I really like this aspect of the game because in a sense it is how we actually think. We have (or at least I do) passive thoughts about how other people are thinking and doing things. We recognize someone’s use of force and commentate on it to ourselves, for example. Or at least I do. That’s our Authority stat 😂

      To your very last bit of discussion:
      The game I think is commenting on how hard right wing people often are susceptible to conspiracies and other unprovable phenomena. Numerous studies in the US at least have been done showing this connection, aside from the obvious Qanon stuff. And I think you are right on the money. It’s about the “imperceptible truth” in their mind. To them racist ideology or fascism is the same as any other imperceptible truth. They have found the solution to the world’s problems. This sort of thinking is not quite as common (though it does still happen of course) on the left. At least not in the US. As to why this is, I think it could be based in part on the origin? Leftist thought is actually highly empirical in nature and features a lot of critical discourse and theory based on historical materialism and lived socioeconomic experiences. Fascism was never and still isn’t based on any kind of fact gathering. It’s phantasmic, like cryptozoology. We can discuss “going too far” in leftism, but in terms of analysis of socioeconomics, it’s the most empirically correct. Notice how most right wing intellectuals will cite long out of date economic, psychological, and sociological theories, or manipulate statistics in dishonest ways (eg. Thomas Sowell, Charles Murray, etc.). It’s because the actual history is not on their side. Again, tying in with cryptozoology.
      In terms of DE’s story, this also hints that Morrell and Lena are fascists too, or at least are sympathetic to the ideology because they are friends with and work with Gary. This is a representation of how lots of racist ideology is hidden in plain view and among “nice people”, not just obvious jerks. Claire employs Measurehead of course, but that is also clearly a transactional relationship and means to an end (which is a whole other discussion even), whereas Lena and Morrell seem to be “friendlier” with Gary.

    That said, I just want to say: You're going to miss something in your first playthrough.
    You kinda have to.
    For example, you didn't get the boots on the hanged man before sending him away.
    You ignored most politics so far.
    And that is okay. Everyone here wants to see your reaction to as many awesome things as possible, but don't let that get in the way of this playthrough. It feels really fresh & interesting because of how YOU play! It shouldn't become a like to-do list.
    Do what you want. Maybe listen to some small hints from the comments. But no need to go out of your way tooo much for that.

      the problem with the game is that it conflates monarchism with fascism... and doesnt really do a great job explaining why the monarchy is fascist, which it could have been, but its not like we get many examples of total state control and brutal repression from the suzerainty, atleast i dont think so.

    • @dimitriid

      The fact that he's also into cryptoids or mythical animals works on some levels: For once there's the obvious pun with cryptofascist (That might be a happy coincidence after translation though, don't speak Estonian myself) but on top of that, the Fash all the way back to early 20th century really enjoyed to force themselves into all kinds of esoteric stuff with many of their symbols and runes being taken from various pre-existing practices and such.
      And Disco Elysium exemplifies perfectly well why: You meet the sweetest old lady and tells you about his husband an otherwise perfectly gentil old man himself but then you find out oh, they're close friends with the same scum that owned that coffee mug, not only that but he goes far beyond into outright fascist believes, then you'd probably find out that the old couple has probably picked up more than a few extreme rhetoric pieces from their young fash friend. That's how that stuff spreads 101 right there.
      So whatever you think about Evrart the one unambiguously positive action he took was trying to intimidate and undermine a known Fascist in his backyard. It's too bad he gets pretty much everything else about his ideology backwards and compromised into self-serving non-effectiveness but at least he knows that one of the most dangerous individuals he *CAN* do something about he *DID* try to do something about so kudos on that...And probably that alone.

    It's actually kind of unfortunate you won't get to see the Fascist vision quest. It allows you to get some deeper psychological insight into the more fascist-leaning characters like Rene, Measurehead, Gary and the Racist Lorry Driver; namely, the question of what drives people to embrace those kinds of politics.
    It also gives Measurehead one of my favorite quotes in the game:
    Measurehead: I'm going to share a secret with you. Here is the secret: there is no love in the past. Only the present. The past is made of static images, distorted memories, demented nostalgia. This, the present - with all its possibilities, innumerable hits and misses - is far superior. It is a _living_ organism.

    It is an interesting point about the "automatic weapons" and "keep some humanity". Mongols didn't need them. They were doing fine with swords and bows. Xiang Yu didn't need them. Just some shovels did him fine. For some reason people think that it's the tools that are needed for a massive scale of human suffering and destruction, yet percentage-wise in terms of "how big was the chunk of the world that got unsubscribed from life?" - WW2 (the biggest modern war with the biggest weapons employed quite willy-nilly) is not even the worst thing that happened on the planet. Not the biggest neither.
    But we blame... The gun. Or the bomb. Or whatever else. As if before that armies didn't suffer massive casualties. And civilians weren't suffering miserably. It's certainly just our age, that is the most brutal. I don't get. I really don't. Even look at the Martinaise. Lack of "automatic weapons" didn't help anyone with anything. And the only people with automatic weapons in Revachol are ones from Moralintern. Because they are allowed to have them. They are the good guys. Obviously!

    Hey, Brady, loving the series. One thing's been bothering me, though - you have realised that Miss Oranje Disco Dancer is lying to you, but have you confronted her on that? Is it intentional that your Harry, essentially, had a breakdown and left right away, as far from her as physically possible?

    "Cryptofascist" is a (kinda obscure) term basically meaning "secretly a fascist," not anything to do with cryptozoology or cryptography.
    ... _however,_ in Gary's case, it's almost certainly a play on words, where it means both the original definition _and_ the mixing in of cryptozoology

    The city was at first owned by the king (the Suzeraine), the communists overthrew him and seized the city. When the cost of dealing with communists who controlled the ports became greater than the capitalists who originally did, the nations of the world came together making the coalition to destroy the communists and keep their profits high and prices down at the cost of everyone living in the city.

      City was owned the king: we know from the statue analysis, and talking to the old soldier (cant remember his name for some reason)
      Communists overthrew him: Same places, + the final cut secret image of the commune of revachol
      Rising costs incited the coalition: While not explicitly said its the only possible leap without the writers being inept morons. The deserter perfectly outlines the will of capital coming to crush the commune. Given the kinds of things the communards argued for the only thing it can be is that prices rose. Its the same reason why the Ruud, the Kortenars, and DePaul were sent in. Martinese is a core port city and the liberals (wild pines and joyce by extention) were part of them getting involved to break up the strike since it was harming profits.
      Cost of everyone in the city: Well this better be obvious

    Well, your tangent at the end was a bit misplaced because modern feminism really did some bad things - portraying masculinity as inherently "toxic", watering down the definition of sexual assault so that mere eye contact becomes such or spreading false accusations that ruin people lives.

    • @birdup1_2
      @birdup1_2 8 днів тому +3

      Radicalism has overtaken a vocal portion. What you’re referring to is extremists, and the tenants of it have, and in theory still are, equality.

    • @beyondviolet
      @beyondviolet 8 днів тому +4

      Stfu, no one thinks eye contact is “sexual assault”. It’s true that women have become hyper paranoid about that stuff but that’s just the result of the treatment they’ve received throughout history. And masculinity absolutely has toxic elements and it has infected society. It negatively affects men just as much as women. False accusations are the fault of people that take advantage of real experiences, not because women in general want to be respected and have equal rights.
