Just watched this movie, the animation is so beautiful, the plot is a bit of a fixer upper but the movie itself more than makes up for it. Especially the animation it’s just absolutely stunning. And the character designs as well, captain harlock and Logan’s designs are very well done in my opinion.
I think I watched this movie for the first time at the ripe age of about 7. This was my absolute favorite movie, and I had absolutely no idea it was an animation. Oh my frekkin gosh... if this is considered an anime, this was the movie that started my love of anime. I... I am at a loss. This brings me back :')
I saw this movie 10 times just to make sure I understood the plot properly. I'm a fan of the Manga and original animated series that came out in the early 1980's. The studio that did this animation was some of the original artists and production staff from Final Fantasy Spirits Within and the Final Fantasy 7 movie. This movie has been out and in English dub for about 2 years and it's amazing. I can only hope that they do Galaxy Express 1999. Would love to see an updated version of that as well, seeing that the both of them were done by the same Manga artist.
+Dante Rondel no it wasn't. it looked badass from the trailer and the CGI was Godlike, but the movie was bad. the only good thing the movie had was the CGI animation
I won't lie, I've already knew this movie existed thanks to Netflix. However it is still a good film in my opinion at least, it made me want to read the original Manga and classic Anime.
Watched this some time ago. As a certified Cpt. Harlock fanboy I had high hopes for this, ive always wanted Harlock to get the attention he deserves. This movie is a Harlock fans dream, everything you'd want it to have its there. It looks amazing and is well acted. My only qualms are a couple plot points that seem illogical, all in all if i where to give it a raiting 8/10. I compare anything Harlock to my favorite adaptation "Arcadia of my Youth" and this movie is on par with that.
I just finished watching Space battleship Yamato 2199 and want to get into Harloc but I've heard that there a few differences between 2199 and the original series (let alone the 2 seasons that followed back in the 80's that haven't been adapted yet). What do you think I should watch next? Thanks for you time anyways, that comment of yours is pretty old after all xD
Chris Fokjohn Its difficult to recommend the first series from 79 simply titled "Captain Harlock" as a jumping on point. One thing you have to realize is that the story of Harlock slightly changes from different series and movies. The themes and the characters are the same, Harlock is still a badass rebel, just the enemies and plot is slightly different. I would recommend watching "Arcadia of My Youth" (1981)first. Do yourself a favor and make sure you watch the sub, cause the dub is godawful and a horrible translation. I adore that movie and I consider it to be the "Definitive" Harlock origin. They made a series based on that movie but I cannot seem to find it anywhere, I think it was called "Arcadia X" or something like that. I'm sure if you watched SBY that you've watched Galaxy Express 999 as well? If not after "Arcadia" that would be a good movie to watch. Harlock shows up a bit and it play a part in his mythos. After that then I would watch the first series from 79. I mean its cheesy sometimes but it was the 70's so it gets a pass. I believe the entire series is on Hulu. There was also a 13 episode mini-series that was made in the 2000's....Stay the hell away from that. I don't know who was smoking what when they wrote and produced that but that's not a Harlock story. Your most welcome. Always willing to help someone learn of my adventures ;)
Harlock is a great character He is full of mercy for kids Almost, he doesn t like war And injustice: "She" better show white flag, NOW!, Conceid before he gives the order. Once the order is given, there is no Surrender. This, is the heart of Harlock! 🕊️🌹🌺🌹🕊️🕊️🕊️🌹🌺🌸🕊️
Dammit! I watched the whole thing thinking it was a trailer / teaser for a new game coming out, and let me tell you, I was SUPER on board :P And then my space pirate dream was crushed.
This film was made in late 2013, yet it has better animation than any Disney or Pixar film ever made! seeing this makes me realise that those two really need to up their game...
the most scary part is that its only 30 million usd. Kinda scary when you watch other movies making 100+ plus million still make a poor job at making the movie
Just got Netflix and was surprised to see this movie on there. Just finished watching it about half an hour ago. I really liked the ending despite the confusion on how the ship was able to run again when Harlock said it was out of dark matter. Could someone explain that?
+Inquisitor Gregor Eisenhorn Dark matter generator seems to depend on the captain and its will, like the energy of the crew. At the end, Yama becoming the new captain Harlock, all the ship come back to life, with a new will. That's my logic ^^
Logan is so handsome. Although the story was so awesome, I still disappointed to what happened to Logan's face. He still handsome though but the scar on his face and losing an eye (he's wearing now an eye patch) are really big loses.
anyone know any half decent space-war anime's kinda like "Space Pirate Harlock" or "Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet"? not exactly mecha gears or anything, just like regular spaceships. if there aren't many I guess I could take some mecha anime recommendations as well. any insight would be appreciated
SPOILER I am not sure I understood as the subbed version was not available... It was dubbed in French lacking some detailed. So I barely got the end ... Is Yama the new Albator or was there a time loop? Please help!
So why would everyone want to go back to broken earth, why is Harlock immortal, why is he a pirate, where did he get an eternal spaceship and why is Earth the bad guys? So confused.
Am I the only one who thought this movie and the whole basic idea of the Arcadia, the whole corrupt universe and a pretty fu**** up earth an amazing idea??
it is good in a lot of way the battle scenes are gorgeous and the storie is really complicated to understand but in the overall it's a pretty good movie
So I just watched this movie as soon as I saw the trailer. I'd rate it a good 7/10 was pretty entertaining had ok plot but the worst part were the characters they just felt so bland and not static at all really but if your into scfy than you should check this out its worth it
It's not bad by any means. I'm pretty sure someone like me who hadn't watched the original series will miss plenty key plot points but I'd recommend it anyway, just for Harloc
Hmm a cgi rendered movie with around the same graphical fidelity as the final fantasy 7 firm and filled to the brim with syfy lores, adventure, and space marines! SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY!
***** The story is so good. I mean like you can even go to wiki and read the plot etc. But just the way they put it together did not do it justice at all.
Lucas Lima You can disagree all you want. Doesn't make it true. Even other people who has reviewed this or watched the older series of it has said the same thing. Either watch the anime & find out why it was rushed, plot-holes, meh, or watch the reviews.Sorry I just don't care enough to type out a long comment explaining the plot holes.
They've made hundreds of other anime series and movies, both manga adaptations as well as original work. And that long before Dragon Ball even existed. They are one of the oldest animation studios in Japan after all.
i think ign is a bit late with showing us this,we all have seen this we all know the story so like every one else whos seen this...why show it now.and i though it was a new one or a remake.
I just wish this was in English, though I understand why it isnt. More people might have watched it if it had been. So many people cant handle watching movies with subtitles. It is rather distracting. You have to watch the subs,so you cant watch the movie's movement easily. Same thing with German and swedish films. There are some amazing German movies that have subs, and those who dont even have them at all. I've watched several without subs. You just have to watch what is going on carefully and you can get the idea.
There aren't enough movies about space pirates if you ask me, this is kickass dude!
Just watched this movie, the animation is so beautiful, the plot is a bit of a fixer upper but the movie itself more than makes up for it. Especially the animation it’s just absolutely stunning. And the character designs as well, captain harlock and Logan’s designs are very well done in my opinion.

PART OF THE CREW, PART OF THE SHIP. THE ARCADIA ALWAYS NEEDS A CAPTAIN 😎

OH MY GOD THOSE RENDERS!!! THEY'RE BEAUTIFUL!!
Man all these people hatin on it to be honest in my opinion it really was a good movie
+Dante Rondel no it wasn't. it looked badass from the trailer and the CGI was Godlike, but the movie was bad. the only good thing the movie had was the CGI animation
+SapiaNt0mata so in other words i cant have an opinion
Dante Rondel i didn't say you can't have an opinion. i just said my opinion. can't i reply and say my opinion?
SapiaNt0mata No you said my opinion is bad read your comment
Dante Rondel don't say words i didn't write
I watched the whole thing yesterday on Netflix. 11/10 on the CG. My god those particle effects.
I won't lie, I've already knew this movie existed thanks to Netflix. However it is still a good film in my opinion at least, it made me want to read the original Manga and classic Anime.
This movie is just incredible. I've watched this about 7 times and it's still amazing nonetheless.
who else is disappointed that it isn't a video game :(
I thought I was watching a CG trailer the whole time...
Soma Rinken Not disappointed. More like saddened by expectation.
+Soma Rinken Try elite dangerous

Captain Harlock The most detailed reply I've gotten on this. Thanks man I owe you :)
Chris Fokjohn Your most welcome:)
Nice!
This movie is really underrated.
Indeed! It's one of my childhood movies!
Underrated movie.
This was actually an awesome movie its been on Netflix for awhile now
Harlock is a great character
He is full of mercy for kids
Almost, he doesn t like war
And injustice:
"She" better show white flag, NOW!,
Conceid before he gives the order.
Once the order is given, there is no
Surrender.
This, is the heart of Harlock!

Captain Harlock the first 10 minutes one of my personal favorite cartoons love and romance nice looking girl

Great movie, amazing animation.
Why do we sail?
Me: For the memes!
Your pfp make it funny
Edit: and also how did you had that many subs even tho u don't have any video lol
500 billion and apparently that's too much for the entire observable universe. You're kidding.
Less about the population and more about the loss of resources
Dammit!
I watched the whole thing thinking it was a trailer / teaser for a new game coming out, and let me tell you, I was SUPER on board :P
And then my space pirate dream was crushed.
Has this not been out for a long time now? I feel like i watched it years ago.
Wow this is better than 2024 animations
Our ship grows daily, even though the captain need to swab his own deck cause his crews busy.
I'm watching this on Netflix! Dubbed in both Japanese AND English!
People just start complaining about everything
This film was made in late 2013, yet it has better animation than any Disney or Pixar film ever made! seeing this makes me realise that those two really need to up their game...
...it is animation, right...?
+The Nebster No, its a CGI.
the most scary part is that its only 30 million usd. Kinda scary when you watch other movies making 100+ plus million still make a poor job at making the movie
dragon jake A large part of the budget for American films goes towards advertising and distribution.
Thanks. I'm reading in the comments that it's old, but I may not have known about this otherwise.
Anyone here watched Albator 84 as a child?
LAFLAME I watched albator 78 mate

Yes, because this hasn't been on Netflix for months now. I love all of this second hand news IGN has.
This is pretty cool!
Yes super impressionnant au ciné
la 3D , SUPER ADAPTATION .
Harlock = ALBATOR .
Logan is so handsome. Although the story was so awesome, I still disappointed to what happened to Logan's face. He still handsome though but the scar on his face and losing an eye (he's wearing now an eye patch) are really big loses.
Mankind was desperately alone.
anyone know any half decent space-war anime's kinda like "Space Pirate Harlock" or "Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet"? not exactly mecha gears or anything, just like regular spaceships. if there aren't many I guess I could take some mecha anime recommendations as well. any insight would be appreciated
Not really an anime but i can recommend _Space Battleship Yamato_
The _Macross_ movies and series are also well made but contain a lot of mecha gears.
Aldnoah Zero
Logan is Harlock

Lucas Lima
