That's such a fun answer I hate to come in with a more serious one. But just in case there are some who are really curious about it and want a serious answer, here's mine. Is it possible to get a bus to jump? Yes - they actually did it for the filming. Is it possible to get a bus to jump as far as it would have had to in order to get across the gap shown in the movie? Without having done the math I'm still pretty sure the answer is no, at least not without adding rocket propulsion or something like that. Would it be possible to jump a gap like that in a freeway bridge with any kind of normal motor vehicle, like maybe an F1 race car? Not unless the bridge was designed by a mad man. If you could jump the gap, you could also go airborne even with the road deck in place. Typically that's not a feature you are looking for in freeway design.
..and there was the case of a London bus driver who jumped the gap as a bridge was separating to allow for a ship to pass. In that case the space he jumped was not made clear in the internet reports I saw but they all agreed it was a double-decker bus.. So.....??
@@ryanhill8886 That's a different case. I'm assuming that the "bridge was separating" means that it was a draw bridge, with one or both sides raising to create the gap. In this case the rising deck would form a ramp, it's not the same as simply taking out a section of an overpass without altering the decks on either side. But I'd still be surprised to find out that the "jump" was a distance of more than a foot or so, and I wouldn't be surprised at all to find out that the bus was never really completely airborne (i.e. I suspect the front of the bus was back on pavement on the far side before the rear of the bus left the pavement on the near side).
I saw this movie about a bus that had to SPEED around a city, keeping its SPEED over fifty, and if its SPEED dropped, it would explode! I think it was called 'The Bus That Couldn't Slow Down. '- Homer S.

I loved first seeing this movie in my teenage years back in 1994 along with The Mask, True Lies, and The Lion King. Speed was not only so awesome but as ridiculous as some parts may seem it's executed so perfectly and is such an engaging movie from start to finish. I love Speed so much that I even like the bloopers and mistakes people find in the movie like when Keanu Reeves first tries to get on the bus where he smashes the window you can see the camera crew filming in the reflection of the bus and it's just funny and unique. Speed is great! My cousin saw this and Keanu Reeves became her heartthrob isntantly.
Uh don’t forget Ace Ventura and Dumb & Dumber! No one else had a time like Jim Carrey did in 1994! Having 3 movies come out the same year when you’re starting off is something no other big actor ever experienced, not even Tom Cruise’s career took off that fast
Saw it in 94 in the theaters. My all time favorite action movie. I remember Siskel & Ebert even suggested in their year in review that Speed should've been nominated for an Oscar
Saw it in the theatre in 94 and to this day it's one of the most thrilling theatre experiences i've had! There had been minimal hype before the release and it just seemed like an ok action movie to catch, so the surprise was high! Wonderful movie, glad that you liked it!
I was 13 years old and wasnt allowed to see R rated movies. My dad saw Speed in the theater and decided I could "handle this one" and took me to a Marcus Theater in Green Bay to see it. It was a true spectacle with the audience going nuts the entire movie. I miss this kind of film style, in camera effects, miniatures, real explosions and almost no cgi. And yes, that is Cameron Fry from Ferris Bueller vacaying in LA!!
I saw this film in the theater as a kid. It was a great experience. And yes, the bus 🚌 jump is literally impossible to make. But, we didn't want the people on the bus to die. So, we rolled with it. Great reaction! 👍🏿
I am super surprised you didn't mention this is the perfect first act, middle act and final act script. First act quarter is the elevator, middle act half is the bus, final act quarter is the subway
I heard that in the original draft of the script the elevator bomber died. It was then Harry, Jack's partner, who would become the movie's villain and put the bomb on the bus. He would've been forced to retire after being shot in the leg by Jack, and his life would fall apart after. Then a year or more after that he would put the bomb on the bus and make Jack get on it. The script was changed after Jeff Daniels was cast, because it was felt that he was "too likeable" and the audience would not want to see him as the villain.
This is one of those films that just came together by some cosmic roll of the dice, and can never be reproduced through sheer will, as many tried(and failed). The story, the characters, the situation, on paper this should have been failed in epic fashion, but the director nailed it as did everyone involved. This movie is like your favorite roller coaster, as you may know where all the twist, turns and dips are, but that never stops it from thrilling you with each ride. And as many times as I've seen this movie, it never gets old, and Sandra was for me the VIP, as how could you not love here character and performance.
I've seen Speed, maybe 50 times, it's one of those movies if I catch it, I end up watching it. In all that time, it took watching it with my BFF to see the "Money isn't everything (yeah right)" Thanks BFF!! 🤣
I watched this on VHS from Blockbuster with my dad. I was eight or nine, and I loved every minute of it. Not just ‘cause it was one of the rare rated R action movies I got to watch with my dad but also ‘cause it’s a great movie! 🤩
Yes. Speed made Keanu Reeves a household name. But, the Matrix trilogy made him a legend. And the John Wick franchise cemented his legend status as an action hero.
20:40 - There is a video (watch?v=NPhNIS69ayQ) that shows the behind the scenes on the bus jump. They got the bus up to 61MPH over 1 mile of run-up. They said it flew 109ft from end of ramp to touchdown, but they also had the bus climb a ramp that looked to be about 6-8 ft tall. The landing smashed the front suspension and shattered the oil pan. -edit: I wrote that up before the trivia at the end.
I saw this movie in the theaters with my cousin when it came out, and when it came to the gap in the road, and that they were gonna have to jump the bus, my cousin and I held each other‘s hands because we were so nervous. Good times ❤
This film perfectly makes you suspend your disbelief while still feeling like everything is real.. I've never been into action flicks, but Speed has always been my fave.. I was 11-12 when it came out and watched it on VHS a million times, all the adults loved it too.. and even back then I thought that the font used for the opening credits was horrible haha..
I remember seeing Speed in the cinema and I was exhausted. 90's action movie just went full throttle, once it started, it only stopped when the credits roll. They just oozed coolness.
They filmed most of the movie going back and forth on the then "under construction" 105 freeway in LA . Sandra gets on the Bus right near the eastbound onramp at Imperial hwy and Douglas Ave. The Freeway run east for 17 miles from LAX to the 605 freeway.
Oooooh, Shanelle's watching one of my all time favorites. This, Demolition Man, and Love Potion No 9, the last film in the I Love Sandra Bullock Trilogy. Also the film that showed me that Keanu was a badass.
I saw Speed in the theater in June 1994 with a friend. A few days later was the OJ chase and seeing aerial shots of the highway after just watching this movie was wild
I love that there are so many practical effects... just before the computer revolution. They really jumped a bus! They had to rig a harness for the driver so he didn't get compression fractures in his spine. As for the train stuff... LA Red line (B now) ftw!
Yeah, lots of people call this "Die Hard on a Bus" (IIRC many considered it settled when even John McTiernan - director of 'Die Hard' - called it that). And they're all wrong :). ("Die Hard" is 1. a lone hero, _maybe_ with a helper, 2. Trapped in one location, 3. _with_ the bad guys, who outnumber him. In 'Speed' Jack Traven _isn't_ trapped with the bad guys, in fact he's the only one on the bus that _can_ [and does] leave, nor is he alone, nor is he outnumbered. And yep, i'm fully aware that this means "Die Hard With a Vengeance" isn't _technically_ a "Die Hard" type movie :)
During filming Sandra said she had the biggest crush on Kaenau Reeves, years later Keanu admitted he had a crush on her during filming. My class went on a school trip and some classmate decided to leave a note on the bus that said bomb on bus when this movie came out. He was kicked out of school.
No visible reason for the nose of the bus to suddenly rise as it enters the gap like we see on screen. The far side is either equal in elevation or even slightly higher than launch point. That jump is absolutely ridiculous.
I remember when the trailer for this movie came out! "There's a bomb on a bus." Saw it in the theater and became obsessed (Keanu Reeves is my root) and then when it was released on VHS I used to watch it every day after school.
It wasn't a hugely anticipated movie that year but when it came out in theaters, everyone was talking about it and it launched the careers of Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock in different ways. Reeves was now seen as a bona fide action star which people still view him as today. Bullock became a romcom queen for many years among other roles.
Best action movie of all time. I first saw this movie when I was a kid and it was brand new to blockbuster. I was at a friends birthday party and his mom rented it for the party not knowing it was rated R. She left and we watched the movie. When she came home and heard the language she checked the box and flipped seeing it was R and she showed it at a 10 year olds birthday party. Fun fact: Jeff Daniels was super smart in this film and it’s the same year Dumb and Dumber came out where Daniels plays an idiot.
Disagree, not even close. This movie was only good for it’s time. This movie wasn’t even the best Keanu Reeves movie, let alone the best action movie of all time
I'm always surprised that people never recognize Alan Ruck from Spin City. Spin City seems to have been forgotten to time. It really was a gem of a sitcom.
Woohoo, you're finally back to doing GOOD cinema! Yeah, I know I'm a day late. Got the notification, opened the video, 0 views, no comments (though the counter said 1), no likes and...a power outage. Got power back hours later and went on to do other things just in case it went back out. Didn't wanna get interrupted. Now that I'm reasonably sure I won't get interrupted by one, let's get on with the video. 😃
Mythbusters actually tackled the "Bus Jump" myth. The answer is no that is not possible. Now if A) there had been a significant ramp at the end of the section or B) if the next section was quite a bit lower maybe. but a 20 foot gap with little to no incline off the launch point the bus would of dropped down several feet within seconds.
Yup yup. Did a back-of-the-envelope calculation once to estimate how fast the bus would need to be moving to clear the gap before it dropped too far, and I came up with several thousand miles per hour.
90s action movies are just different. And on top of that, 1994 was the best year for movies. I saw this in the theater. It was awesome. This movie was so big that summer.
While I do agree that 94 was the best year of the 90s for movies. It wasn’t the best year ever for movies… the 80s had great movies every year in that decade. The 80s blows the 90s outta the water

You’re forgetting a whole lot… Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, Dumb and Dumber, Forrest Gump, Shawshank Redemption, Pulp Fiction, Interview with the Vampire just to name a few
Fun movie, crazy concept, Keanu Reeves as a young guy is a treat, its so different than John Wick. Separate note: This is why we don't negotiate with terrorism. The amount of damage that occured by appeasing this man was insane. The idea of taking a bus with a massive bomb on it and taking it on a joyride through the city is insane.
"Gigantor" is a blast from the past. Most young people may not know that it was a cartoon on TV back in the 60's. It was of a giant robot controlled by a kid. If I remember correctly, the cartoon comes from a 50's Japanese cartoon manga.
Ah yes, back when they made movies. Shame the director didn't really live up to this promise. One of the absolute best of the 90's, iconic. It was a great watch with a crowd.
I read that Jan De Bont got inspired to do an elevator sequence from when he was trapped in one for a 1-2 hours while a cinematographer on the original Die Hard. If you notice the logo “Pacific Courier” on the plane that the bus crashes into, it was the courier truck that the terrorists arrived in at Nakatomi Plaza in Die Hard because both movies had the same production designer who also changed to logo to “Atlantic Courier” for Die Hard with a Vengeance since that film is set in NYC.
I saw this in the theater when it came out. I was 13 at the time. I was on the edge of my seat the WHOLE time, and by the end, I was drenched in sweat. It's been one of my all-time favorite movies ever since.
We were very stunned. It was also the first time we saw Keanu as something other than a skinny little kid. He got jacked for it, and we were not prepared lol.
Physicist here. According to my research, which consists mostly of watching old Dukes of Hazard episodes, that jump is totally possible.
They totally should've done a freeze frame mid-jump. "Well, it looks like ol' Annie may have bit off more than she can chew..."

It's really too bad that Shanelle, and probably most people watching, are too young to get the "just a really big Pinto" joke - it's a classic!
I think of that scene from "Top Secret!" :)
Saw it in the theatre in 94 and to this day it's one of the most thrilling theatre experiences i've had! There had been minimal hype before the release and it just seemed like an ok action movie to catch, so the surprise was high!
Wonderful movie, glad that you liked it!
I geniunely love that section from 12:17-12:22. That guy's "There's a bomb on your WHAT!" makes me laugh every time.
Shanelle, trust me when I say that "Speed 2" is not worth the time of day.
"Is that Cameron from Ferris Bueller". Yes. Alan Ruck. He was also "Stuart" in the Spin City comedy series. :)
Wasn't he also in Alien Nation?
@@TheJamieRamone He has been in a lot of things. I just thhink he is mostly known for Ferris Buellers day off and Spin City :)
32:59 - And THAT is why we all recommended this one on so many comments and livestreams. 😉
Yes,that's Cameron 👍🎩
I saw this film in the theater as a kid. It was a great experience. And yes, the bus 🚌 jump is literally impossible to make. But, we didn't want the people on the bus to die. So, we rolled with it. Great reaction! 👍🏿
I am super surprised you didn't mention this is the perfect first act, middle act and final act script. First act quarter is the elevator, middle act half is the bus, final act quarter is the subway
Blue Thunder is a seriously intense Action/Drama set in Los Angeles.
I think I suggested. Might come up on her next live.
In all that time, it took watching it with my BFF to see the "Money isn't everything (yeah right)"
Thanks BFF!! 🤣
Don't watch it 5 more times.
@@rimasmuliolis1136 💀 my mind is blown!!! 😮💛
The chill dude with the Jaguar, is my favorite character.
He’s in the sequel too
@@TXRager shh, we don't talk about that. 😂
@@meggsy82RIGHT!!!😂😂😂😂😂
I watched this on VHS from Blockbuster with my dad. I was eight or nine, and I loved every minute of it. Not just ‘cause it was one of the rare rated R action movies I got to watch with my dad but also ‘cause it’s a great movie! 🤩
I personally enjoy how Sandra keeps Keanu grounded in this film
If you haven't watched The Net with Sandra Bullock, it's another great 90s flick.
Seconded
For modern audiences, the technological stuff is so bad it's infuriating, but the underlying thriller is fun.
@@theaikidoka for a 90s kid though it's pure nostalgia. I'm used to turning my mind off with movies anyway, it's rarely accurate.
@@sparkequinox Oh yeah, I still enjoy the movie. Sandra Bullock is genuinely charming is almost everything.
Great is a strong word but I certainly loved it when it came out. I remember thinking it would be so cool to order a pizza on my computer. Lol.
The simplest of plots but done perfectly. And in my opinion the launching pad for Keanu Reeves as an action star
Absolutely!
Yes. Speed made Keanu Reeves a household name. But, the Matrix trilogy made him a legend. And the John Wick franchise cemented his legend status as an action hero.
Point Break came out a few years before Speed and was the film that really showed he could carry an action film.
Keanu always embodies his role and character fully
Yes, this was great in the theater.
Mr. Tourist is Cameron from Ferris Beuller's Day Off
20:40 - There is a video (watch?v=NPhNIS69ayQ) that shows the behind the scenes on the bus jump.
Being Dutch, Jan deBont's name is pronounced "Yawn".
THANK YOU. Shanelle, read this and keep up the good work.
Because EVERY non-English language has "J" pronounced as "Y." In fact, ALL slavic languages do (Like Czech, Slovakian, Polish, etc.
This reaction was Shan-tastic!
I was 10 in 1994 when I saw this. I loved it!
me too
In the 90s physics worked differently. We were just coming out of the 80s with all the cars that would explode
Screeching burnouts on dirt roads too.
True Lies, another 1994 action packed movie is worth watching. :)
I love that there are so many practical effects... just before the computer revolution. They really jumped a bus! They had to rig a harness for the driver so he didn't get compression fractures in his spine. As for the train stuff... LA Red line (B now) ftw!
Only Keanu Reeves can say the words “Just two cool guys just hanging on a bus”.
Engineer here, no that jump is impossible. Honestly you don't have to be an engineer to see that it was impossible to make that jump.
Thank you. I was about to say the same. It’s the only part of the movie that pulls me out entirely.
Right, for the gap they showed, it's not even a jump, it's just a "drive off the edge and plummet to your death"
Even a Mythbuster could tell you that the jump was impossible
No visible reason for the nose of the bus to suddenly rise as it enters the gap like we see on screen. The far side is either equal in elevation or even slightly higher than launch point. That jump is absolutely ridiculous.
@@vandalhooch9773it was a shot error. They should have had a ramp shot before the jump (like the shot once it left the road) it was a goof.
This is a total fantasy. There is no way you could get up to 50mph on your average workday in Los Angeles. its just not possible.
😂😂😂
To everyone pointing out the jump and the turn, THIS was the most unrealistic part 😂
I remember when the trailer for this movie came out! "There's a bomb on a bus." Saw it in the theater and became obsessed (Keanu Reeves is my root) and then when it was released on VHS I used to watch it every day after school.
If a pay phone rings do you answer it.. 2002 Movie Phone Booth is worth a look. Great cast as well.
No one on UA-cam has ever reacted to Phone Booth… at least not that I’m aware of
The mascot of the University of Arizona is a Wildcat. Payne was able to see her sweater with the U of A logo on it.
I gotta call shenanigans on that one though. When they show the camera footage, there's no way it's clear enough to pick out details like that.
"Yeah, but I'm taller." was that line.
Saw it when it came out in theaters - I was going into 7th grade. Blew my mind at the time.
This is definitely a classic, “shut-your-brain-off-and-enjoy” kind of a movie, and is certainly worth watching.
I cant believe Shan didn't think they would jump the bus over the gap. It was the 90s. Anything was possible.
This movie wasn’t even the best Keanu Reeves movie, let alone the best action movie of all time
… also Jeff Daniels character in Dumb and Dumber wasn’t anymore of an idiot than adam sandler is in all of his bullshit movies
“Whoa”. That’s this movie. 😂
24:16 Yeah, you were right about Jeff Daniels’ character dying. You were just a little early 😬
I saw this in theaters. It was awesome. The audience clapped for this one.
It’s weird they didn’t just make one of those conditions. Even a ramp out of construction materials would have suspended the belief less.
13:24 Shan's look at the camera and reaction when the bus driver got shot was absolutely amazing.
That was a masterful 4th wall break. I died. 😂
18:53 I love how she JUST realized it’s him 🤣
90s action movies are just different.
Wow I can't believe you haven't seen SPEED till now. Well, there's a lot movies out there I guess but 1994 was a huge year in movie cinema from The Mask, True Lies, The Lion King, Clear & Present Danger, the Client, and of course Speed. Thx for ur reaction. Better late than never.
You’re forgetting a whole lot…
Ace Ventura: Pet Detective,
Dumb and Dumber,
Forrest Gump,
Shawshank Redemption,
Pulp Fiction,
Interview with the Vampire just to name a few
Again, I freakin love that the bus jump is the only questionable part of this movie. So funny.
"Is that possible?" No chance in hell.
Did she not notice Keanu called the big guy “Gigantor”, I always thought that was so random but funny lol. I love this film, it’s just perfect
He's bigger than big, and he's taller than tall.
Ortiz!
Gigantor was far better than Astro Boy.
"Gigantor" is a blast from the past. Most young people may not know that it was a cartoon on TV back in the 60's. It was of a giant robot controlled by a kid. If I remember correctly, the cartoon comes from a 50's Japanese cartoon manga.
Chanelle definitely needs to rewatch the end of the fight on top of the subway. She completely missed, "Yeah, but I'm taller!"
Hi Shanelle hope you are having an great and awesome day ❤️
We were very stunned. It was also the first time we saw Keanu as something other than a skinny little kid. He got jacked for it, and we were not prepared lol.
To think that Keanu went from Bill and Ted to this and the Matrix...that's an excellent adventure!
And then John Wick!
Point Break.
In an alternate universe Ted was sent to the military school and became John Wick. Bill went to Santa Carla and became a vampire.
@@keanucooper2103 I had to stop somewhere lol
