If you are new to my channel and Fy Nyth (Welsh for "My Nest") in general, welcome! I'm Ariel. Along with my husband Clay, our dogs, cats, and some poultry, we live in a tiny house on wheels in the mountains of western Wyoming and are working on setting into our own new little homestead. I've been living this lifestyle since 2014 and my wonderful partner has joined me more recently. What will you find if you follow the channel and watch the videos?
Real life here. I try to show the good and the bad. The ups and the downs. What works, and what doesn't. The parts I love (most of it!), and the things that suck. Not just the showroom version of a tiny house, but everyday life in a tiny house. Not just the romantic idea of "homesteading" or off grid life, but the everyday details of this lifestyle. We split wood for heat, fill the water tank from a gravity fed spring, and attempt to grow as much of our own food as possible between the weather and wildlife here. I hope to help others learn from mistakes and make life just a little easier for anyone else interested in pursuing a similar lifestyle.
We live in a somewhat harsh and cold climate, but enjoy the stunning scenery and wildlife that we are surrounded by on a daily basis. You'll also see videos of the nature and wildlife around my home. You didn't mention my number one wheelbarrow requirement: NO PNEUMATIC TIRES!!! They ALWAYS go flat frequently. Solid rubber only!

I have to chime in here with my latest find: a Gorilla wagon I bought at Home Depot. Put an end to my daily wheelbarrow use, soooo much easier! Big wheels, goes over anything and also tilts so when I mulched I just life’s the bed and it poured out. I used it to haul groceries to the house too. Best best purchase next to my cordless weed wacker.

I have always used the single wheel, but I needed a new one and bought the two wheels. Frankly, I really like the two wheels as it doesn’t tip over with heavy loads and my wife handles it better than one wheel. My two wheels also has a bigger bucket.

I've used a two-wheel barrow for 20+years. Much more stable. Pay more for one with metal handles. The wooden handles on mine are deteriorating, and I had to wrap the grips to prevent splinters. Loose bolts? Prophylactic Loc-Tite treatment. I would buy one in a box and assemble it myself.

The big plastic one looks brand new and I know it is two year old because I remember when you got it. I just used my contractors wheelbarrow, like your fav, today to mix 21 bags of concrete. I also use mine nearly everyday on my homestead and I do not even have a garden yet. Nice video Ariel.

Our mountain ranch has rocky soil and lots of hills. I go with the two wheeled model. It is far more stable on uneven surfaces. We have a couple of them that are about 20 years old now, and they are fantastic still!

Eash design has their place. If the load shifts to the side, the single wheel design might become harder to control. Can happen when moving concrete to an inaccessible location. I prefer the 2-wheel design as it's easier for my old bones and muscles to control. To each, their own.

My favorite is a wider lower 2 wheeler -more of a cart I guess- for cleaning the paddocks, hauling feed etc. Lighter weight as well.

I had a single wheeled style and it didn’t take me long to get a threaded galvanized rod, and extra wheel and I’ll never go back. Reason being, with bad shoulders, hips, back, it’s completely more stable, for me…. Someone else mentioned the gorilla cart from Home Depot, now that set up you would never use a wheel barrel again, I use it for hauling firewood mulch etc. much easier on my older body…. That’s why they have so many different options out there, everyone is different.

I think the design of the two wheeled wheelbarrow matters. Ours seems to have the wheels closer together, so they almost act as a more stable one wheeled version. I LOVE the two wheels. We live in Alaska and have very uneven/undeveloped ground. I can do really heavy loads and don't have to worry as much about losing my load because the two wheels make it much more stable. Ours is made by Jackson and when we had a part break on it after many years of use. I called the company and they sent the new part for free! Great company.

I don’t have a big homestead and Although not a “wheelbarrow” I love my Gorilla Cart for hauling brush, dirt, wood etc…it dumps and is transported easily. As an older woman with fading arm strength 😏 “Wheel Barrels” are always difficult for me to maneuver.

You are awesome. I will def go with single wheel now. The uneven ground observation is a clincher. Can you comment on the wheel choices? Tube, solid no flat or the extra wide tire?

The one wheel looks like the wheelbarrow we have. My husband had it long before we met and it is still going strong. We are in Florida, one block from the ocean, so we always clean it out after using, dry it, then store in our shed. Hope it lasts many more years.

I can relate. If it's motorized and I have a non-motorized option I will take it. Noise and exhaust irritate me. If it takes a bit longer without a motor I am ok with that.

Totally agree about the unstable 2 wheeled barrow - my land is uneven & hilly & that wheelbarrow is impossible to use! Another thing is that it's really easy to break the plastic - just tossing firewood into it, can break it!

This was my first summer growing a garden . Fantastic amazing success . 3 raised beds overflowing. BUT I don't know what to do with it next month. I'm 8000 ft elevation . Do I dig it all up and bury it as compost ? I'm especially concerned about my strawberries. If I throw straw over it will it come back next year ? Zuchini --- cilantro--- basil ---- chard--- pumpkin--- onions ----

Congrats! Strawberries should come back year after year. I never cover mine, but we pretty consistently get deep snow that buries them so if you don't then covering with straw would probably be a good idea. Everything else on your list is an annual so eat, enjoy, dry, preserve, compost, or whatever all you want to do with them. Though you can save seeds for the next year, none of the individual plants growing this year will return.

I got a two wheel. Only good for flat simple surfaces. Harder to turn. It's crap. And all hardware was loose too. I'm going to drill holes in the bucket and make it a planter at the bottom of the driveway. One wheel forever!

I personally like the single wheel wheelbarrow, and here's a tip, if the load is a little on the heavy side, move your hands towards the barrow 👍🏼😉. I also use a gorilla cart, mine is an older one, with a tilting mechanism, they both get equal amounts of usage. When I'm fertilizing I use the wagon and fill the two 5 gallon buckets to 4 gallons, sure saves me the "hard" work of lugging around the 32 pound or so bucket of fertilizer for plants on a weekly basis😀

Tire bounce is air pressure dependent. Let some air out, and that two wheel will roll much more smoothly. Just be careful to not let someone much out that you get a pinch flat.

I think the best for a lady would be a double front tire wheel barrow, so you want have to worry about balance and will be easier to use.

Yup I got rid of my wheelbarrow and got a dump wagon that will hold 800lbs of weight. This one is not one you tow it's a hand pull one and it's so much easier for me than a wheelbarrow. I hated how wheelbarrows can tip over on uneven ground so easily and you need so much upper body strength to wheel them around.

  • @James-Jacobsen
    @James-Jacobsen 2 роки тому

The wheelbarrows are assembled at the store you buy it from not the MFG. That is why the bolts are always loose, Salesman trying to be mechanics.

  • @theblossomingrealm4041

Saying the doubled wheel makes you lose your load is unfair. If you only put the same amount as in the single wheel you will lose less no matter how bumpy the ground.
Yes, taking corners with a double wheel is not the same and needs some getting use to.
Here's a tip: Pull the loaded double wheel instead of pushing it. It will follow you everywhere with less strain on rough terrain.
I go off trail in the woods to bring back my fire logs with my double wheel. Would never even attempt with a single wheel.
