  • In this video I channel my inner negative feedback while my buddy Panda (@pandrew_p) teaches me how to shoot his Hasselblad 500cm medium format film camera. I was a total noob and made a lot of mistakes but I learnt a lot too, and maybe you can aswell by watching.

Okay. To correct a few things: Kodak 400TX is Tri-X 400iso black and white film, not Tmax 400. That would be denoted as 400TMY (for some reason). Also, yes, the lens is the important part of this camera system as both the shutter (which controls your shutter speeds) is in the lens as a leaf shutter, which means that the shutter can sync with the flash at any of the available speeds, all the way up to 1/500th of a second. For a Hasselblad 500cm, as well as all other V series Hasselblads, the shutter is NOT in the body as they stated. What they are mistaking for a shutter is actually a set of barn doors in the body to help block stray light entering the body during an exposure. It should also be noted that these barn doors are sometimes slower than the actual shutter so it is good practice to press and hold the shutter open so as to not cut the exposure short with the barn doors since they close as soon as you let go of the shutter button. As well as the shutter, what they were trying to get at in the video is that the aperture, and subsequent control, is also in the lens as it is with most manual lenses. This controls your depth of field as well as the amount of light that is allowed to enter the camera at once. Fuji FP100c is a discontinued peel-apart instant film that was used to test exposures in a studio setting before moving onto "real" film. In the way that they used a Canon 5D to test exposure, that is the old-school purpose of the Fuji instant film. For the record, this is NOT Polaroid film. It is Fujifilm instant film. The dark slide only needs to be inserted when removing/switching backs as it blocks light from hitting the film. The dark slide does not need to be removed and inserted for every exposure. Due to some fancy Swedish mechanics, the shutter will not fire with the darkslide inserted and the back cannot be removed with the darkslide out. Pretty cool stuff. It is also ill-advised to use the dark slide to open up a roll of film as this can bend your darkslide and then you have light leaks to worry about. Not good. Please don't take my comment as being condescending. When it comes to these cameras, there is A LOT to learn and I just want to do my best to make sure accurate information is given to those who may need it. Keep up the good work and never stop shooting!

Hello fellows. As an old film photographer, it is always fun for me to watch young guys shoot film on a classic camera, especially a Hassy. Way back in 1972, as a teenager, I worked as an apprentice to a professional photographer who used Hasselblad as did just about every pro. A big part of my job was keeping things organized during a shoot so that he could focus totally on getting the results he wanted without having to think about the hardware.
One tip though, if you are in a shooting session, you don't actually have to replace the dark slide each shot with roll films unless you are going to remove the film back. The camera will not allow you to remove the film back without the dark slide in place. This allowed us to change film stock mid-shoot with multiple backs without ruining the film. The interlock also kept you from tripping the shutter while the dark slide was in so that you didn't think you were getting pictures when you weren't actually exposing film. So in practice during a portrait shoot, we'd take out the dark slide once, shoot the roll, then put it back in at the end unless we had to change film mid-roll. Some of the film backs even had a holder attached to put the dark slide in when you weren't using it, because if you put it in your back pocket as a lot of us did, you would bend it. Most of us had several film backs and might keep one loaded with black and white and the other with color, or two different speed films. The Polaroid back was only used for test shots to confirm our lighting set up, one or maybe two shots per shoot, and we really never used it outside of the studio. Back in the day we shot whole wedding ceremonies on one or two Hassy bodies, and some young dork like me was handed a 35mm SLR with a flash, usually a Nikon, to shoot candids at the reception while the pro went on to the next wedding, trying to get in two a day.
Keep up the good work. You will get the hang of it. The old gear just requires more concentration and attention to detail, and is completely unforgiving of errors. But as you saw, the experience and results are worth it, especially when you see an actual optical print (not from an ink jet printer) made on actual light-sensitive photo paper in a wet darkroom. It's the difference between a photocopy and an oil painting, and it is a real shame that our kids will probably never get to see those again. Cheers!

Also the shutter is in the lens, all c and cf lenses have leaf shutters, the shutter in the body is called auxiliary shutter used to prevent exposure to the film when you change lenses

So...you do know you can just leave the dark slide out all the time unless you are changing the back to another one. Not too spontaneous to push it in and out all the time, as well as being completely useless with unnecessary wear and tear.

You don't need to put the dark slide in after each shot. Only when you're changing backs.

What are you plugging the pocket wizards into? This happens in the video around :54. You mentioned its the Godox ES 400P but im only seeing the Godox light fixture when I search that name on google. It looks like you plugged the pocket wizard into some box no the light directly ? Please advise! thank you!

Sort of cute but ought to read the manual first. They screwed up the taking procedure, the film type, and the camera type (this hasselblad has only a lens shutter).. mike butkus has pdf manuals for every camera free online. Their english could use some work as well, "what settings are we at?" never end a sentence with a preposition. But good try for some kids. At least they are trying it and learning it albeit slowly.

Taking the darkslide in and out will eventually wear out the light seals. I generally shoot with the slide removed in my pocket or bag, and replace it when I’m done. It’s like turning off and on your camera between each photo, completely unnecessary

Pls, stop talking BS! The shutter is in the lens! Otherwise, I like young enthusiastic analog lovers. I only think that taking the portraits with a 50mm wide-angle lens is very disrespectful to the person in the front of the lens. On the final photo he/she will look a bit like Quasimodo. For next time try to take portraits with 120 mm or 150 mm lenses. Just my 2 cents. Thumbs up!!!
