  • Furious drops a few life lessons.
Watch Boyz N' The Hood Now: AAN.SonyPicture...
BOYZ N THE HOOD is the critically acclaimed story of three friends growing up in a South Central Los Angeles neighborhood, and of street life where friendship, pain, danger and love combine to form reality. "The Hood" is a place where drive-by shootings and unemployment are rampant. But it is also a place where harmony coexists with adversity, especially for three young men growing up there: Doughboy (Ice Cube), an unambitious drug dealer; his brother Ricky (Morris Chestnut), a college-bound teenage father; and Ricky's best friend Tre (Cuba Gooding, Jr.), who aspires to a brighter future beyond "The Hood." In a world where a trip to the store can end in death, the friends have diverse reactions to their bleak surroundings. Tre's resolve is strengthened by a strong father (Larry Fishburne)who keeps him on the right track. But the lessons Tre learns are put to the ultimate test when tragedy strikes close to home, and violence seems like the only recourse.

I've heard that Eddie Murphy was considered to play Furious at one point. Now, I've got no doubt that he would have been able to pull it off, but still...they got the right guy for the part in Lawrence Fishburne.

This is true, he wouldn't have had the same justified anger and mentorship Fishburne always brings. But catch Mr. Murphy in a movie called "Mr. Church".

No way they could’ve afforded Eddie and it wouldn’t have been as good. His star would’ve overshadowed the entire role and movie.

Also he went into The Army and went to Vietnam, he was part of the first "Integrated" War, he went around 1972 which means he represented the last set of men to go. Can you imagine how he'd feel if he went to the Memorial Wall in Washington, DC. That would have been heavy.

Let the white man send his privileged suburban white sons and daughters to fight the wars that they started! 🤷‍♂️ Black people already served over 400 years building the country while being enslaved, segregated and discriminated against in every single way, shape and form. Let the white man march to their deaths for the wars they started.

I think Eddie Murphy already by this time was quite acclaimed and solidified as a comedy actor (always had that touch even if not comedy), which, I think, would've actually killed his credibility doing this role. Lawrence however, I mean, he did Matrix later. They picked the right guy. This movie is an absolute masterpiece.

Furious was talking about how things were back then when being a black man in the army meant dealing with a whole lot of racism. Black people were treated as less than human, and that's why he said that to Trey. It was a tough reality where being black in the military came with a bunch of unfair hurdles due to the widespread racism of the time.
