    youtube needs more 4x4 build channels. especially since motortrend paywalled theirs

    • @WebWheeler
      @WebWheeler  5 років тому

      Yeah it would be better if they at least put episodes on UA-cam after they've been on motor trend for a couple months to keep it easy for people to stay up to date on the free episodes

    Keep it up man. Your videos are very informative and are a lot more suitable to the beginner diy ers, which is what I am, so thank you

      Thanks a lot! I want to keep it accessible for everyone that's interested in this stuff. Even if the build is a big undertaking, hopefully the videos show that there's not much to it besides practice, work, and time haha. Thanks a lot for watching!

    Love the build concept . My favorite truck ever was an 01 Dakota crew no lift on 33s. Can't wait to watch it happen.

    I'm in the same boat as you. I have a vehicle that almost no one has aftermarket stuff for. I have a 2002 Ford F-150 (the F-150 that time forgot) so I have to custom build a lot of stuff. I know its been two year since you posted this, but I'll be following along and picking up tips for building my own rig.

    • @WebWheeler
      @WebWheeler  3 роки тому +1

      Haha yeah those early 2000's f150s are definitely underserved in the after market too. The custom stuff is more satisfying but definitely not quicker haha. I'm glad you found the channel! It'll continue to be about the vision with- I'm not interested in being a bolt-on UA-cam channel haha. The videos are actually way behind the actual progress of this Dakota- I'm currently driving this truck around with the 40s and living it so far. Plenty more work to do and plenty more videos coming! Thanks for watching! 👍

    Cool build. Great timing too, I’m working on a Dakota SAS project. Your Dana 60 trimming video helped me out a lot. Can’t wait to see your completed. Mine should hopefully be done by March.

    Interesting project, looking forward to seeing how it goes! Do the videos because you want to for fun, don't count on them helping fund your project at all. That way you won't be upset when UA-cam decides to screw over the small creators again.

    Well, the only bad question is one not asked. I'm just between changing oil and replacing wheel bearings as far as experience goes. A garage DIYer for sure. I've got a 1996 Dodge Ram with several issues which seem well beyond my abilities, but then I found your channel, ripping, cutting and tossing/changing axles like changing fishing lures! So maybe I can fix some shat!
    Hope you don't mind me asking a few beginning questions...1) Less than 10,000 miles ago, both front rotors and brakes were replaced by a local shop. Now, the u-joints are junk and the dana 60 axles are really taking a beating. I want to replace the u-joints myself. Yesterday, I found one of the bolts that attach the knuckle to the hub is missing. WTF? I don't know if they left it off, or what. How serious is this to only have three bolts holding on? I don't plan on driving it until I replace the u-joints.1a) Because the u-joints are really bad... should I replace any other parts such as the hubs and seals in the axle?2) Amazon sells Detroit Axle hubs and new bolts... Good buy or stupid? 3) We live in NE Wisconsin where rust destroys vehicles. Last Winter I replaced my wife's 2000 Saturn sub frame as it was going to the junk yard without it! That was fun! Rust around here is a demon! My question is about the Dodge front coil spring bottom rest(s) which is all but rusted away. How could I fix this? There is plenty of frame, but the rest (coil cup or whatever it is called) has no edges left. I am worried the coil could slide (if that is even possible). I just don't like how it looks. Any recommendations?Hope you don't mind the questions. I like your shop! LOL

    • @WebWheeler
      @WebWheeler  5 років тому

      Thanks for checking out the videos. No worries about the questions! Just spread the word about the channel if I help you out ;)
      1) It should hold with only 3 bolts but you definitely want to add that last one ASAP! When you have it apart for the u-joints I would just pull a bolt and get ones to match. Might even replace all the bolts- no telling why the one is missing but if the bolts have been stretched from being overtightened or removed and installed too many times they could will lose some ability to hold tight and back out from vibration.
      2) I would run the Detroit stuff if the price is decent. I tend to buy a lot based on Amazon reviews so if the reviews for Detroit stuff are generally good then I say go for it!
      3)Yeah I don’t envy you guys for having to deal with those rust issues haha. The part you’re referring to is the coil bucket. The edges being rusted away is obviously not ideal but most coil buckets have a post in the center that locates the coil and keeps it from sliding around. As long as that’s in good shape and the bottom of the bucket isn’t too corroded you should be OK. Best way to fix it is to cut the bucket off and weld in some replacement coil buckets. They’re available a few places online including Ebay for around $70/pair. If the bucket is structurally sound and you just want the edges to look better, you could clean the edge up with a grinder and use some chassis paint like POR15 to stop it from rusting further then just find a piece of tube/pipe that fits around the coil and cut it to about 1/2" long, JB weld it in to the bucket, and paint to match. Again though, this is ONLY if the bucket is structurally good and just the edge is rotted.
      Good luck!

      Thanks for the answers! I was telling someone last night about your channel how you literally cut the rear end out a vehicle and slapped a bigger one in. I thought this kind of shat was only done in movies! LOL The name of your channel is easy to remember so I think it's going to going viral in no time.
      Maybe I could send you some photos of the rust demons for comments. I really don't know how much of the coil buckets are rusted. I didn't really want to chip away at it! Never know where the rust ends! I've made this mistake before!
      I had the truck in 4WD before I went to inspect and possibly remove the axle, which I stopped when I saw I only had 3 bolts holding the hub on. I don't want to take it apart until I have replacement bolts. As I spin the axle and gears stop the rotation, the axle will pivot up because of the junk u-joint. Would the outer axle seal be bad if the axle can slide up and down when turning the rotor? I worry about the wheel bearings as well. I might just buy new for both sides to be safe. Bearings and new hub bolts. They are reasonably priced.
      My email is ( Rj Aquaponics @ gmail . com)Thanks again for your help!Rj

      @WebWheeler  5 років тому

      No problem RJ! Email me some pictures at webwheeleroffroad@gmail.com and I will let you know what I think.
      The outer axle shaft that's in the knuckle definitely shouldn't be able to move up and down. The shaft that's going from the disconnect to the u joint might have some play when disengaged but I'm not positive- I haven't dealt with those vacuum disconnect axles too much so I'm not sure that's a problem or not. And yeah if you're that far in to it might as well check all the bearings and seals you can haha. Good luck!

    Noob question here, is it possible to do a solid axle swap on a 2013 F-150 4x4?

    • @WebWheeler
      @WebWheeler  5 років тому +1

      If you're willing to cut and weld it can be done haha. Actually a pretty similar project to what I'm doing with this Dakota I think. I'm going to cover the process with the upcoming videos and that should give you some idea of what's involved. Hope they help! 👍

    What are those jack stands?

    • @WebWheeler
      @WebWheeler  5 років тому

      They're called pipe stands. Those specifically are Sumner hi jacks st-881. If I were to get them again I would buy their lo jack st-981 instead. The ones I have are a little too tall to get the full use out of them but they're great. 2500lb capacity each and you can adjust the height of them while they're under load which is really helpful for leveling stuff out while building. I will talk more about them in the videos about the front axle swap 👍 thanks for watching!

    Why the super duty axels?

    • @WebWheeler
      @WebWheeler  2 роки тому +1

      Because kingpin axles (especially the Ford high pinions) are outrageously priced these days haha. I got the front and rear axles for well under $1000 total vs $2k for just a kingpin front. Plus these axles have better steering angle (45*) and 35 spline outers from the factory, and can fit a larger ujoint. The only drawbacks are the ball joints and unit bearings but they're plenty beefy for this size truck even with 40s

      Me too! Apparently they made a limited edition 4x4 R/T with the 5.9. I'm in CA and it was never sold here- federal emissions only which means I actually get to have some fun without worrying about CA's ridiculous smog laws
