  • Last year we planned for 6 months so we could coordinate 4 guys all going on this trip together. It finally happened even though it looked as though it might not along the way. We had our share of challenges during the trip but that is part of what makes these trips adventures.
    We had 1 BMW F800, 1 KTM 990, 1 KTM 350 and a KTM 1090 on the trip. All the bike made it through the trip including Black Bear Pass.

    Where to start? The effort that you have put into is not lost on me. It was great. The video, you had to go through so much footage to get this and probably agonized over cuts.
    But on its pure merit, its a great video and I hope you get MILLIONS of views, but we all know how that goes.
    Keep it up, fantastic work. Was just talking about the NMBDR today with new friend met on Reddit Dualsport.

      Thank you so much for this compliment and yes you are correct in regards to the effort. I couldn’t have finished it though without the help from Clecio from the video. He not only assisted shooting during the ride but also help indexing all the files afterwards. Good luck on the NMBDR if you end up doing it. I’ve heard good things about that one too.

      Should have transitioned one of the crash scenes to a 30 second black screen. “This is what it looks like after you black out on a 990. It looks the same as blacking out on an R1200GS, only you pay a lot less. This is Tom Bodette, we’ll leave the light on for you.”

    Jesus, talk about making a Western. I bought a 96 XR650L, shoved some knobblies on it for my mate from England. I threw some knobblies in the Dakar, packed a sleeping bag, tent, frying pan and a fuckload of beer and set off. Piece of cake, no-one fell off, we just followed the trail and finished it. You'd think this lot were riding across Australia.

    John C. was a very generous man and he let me test his T7 for a 150 mile loop in Canton PA for free. He took his 1090 and we scouted a tour loop that a storm came through a couple of days earlier as we needed to make sure the routes were clear and ready to go for a tour he was leading the next day.
    It was my first ever experience on any off-road and on any adv bike. I loved it. I learned so much in the 8 hours it took. I did my best to keep up with him, he was usually a dusty blur haha. I dropped his T7 twice, sorry John 😂

      @@drjdvm Hey John! Nope, life threw a curve ball at me and I had to get a new car instead.
      My wife has recently been showing interest in 2 up touring, so now I’m focusing my bike choices on bikes like a 1250 GS or Tiger 1200 rally. The new ATAS with the 19” front looks decent. Soon the car will be paid off and then I can get the adv bike.

      @kdemotorsports  5 років тому

      Thanks for the compliment and yes you have the right bike and an amazing backyard. So congrats on both of those. The kill switch problem will be very obvious if it happens because the switch itself won’t move to the run position. The concept of that piece is to prevent accidental changes to the position of that switch but it gets lodged in there. Rather odd issue.

    Excellent review of the COBDR! Thanks for your efforts at giving us an honest recap of the challenges and rewards. On the bikes, none is without its niggling demons. I have a KTM 640 Adventure to which I've added a second radiator fan to manage overheating problems and prefer the lower weight vs hp for the inevitable drop. Soft luggage may be a better choice, too. The ATK has a great Rotax motor - amazing grunt for those tight sections on Black Bear Pass - what a butt puckering experience! Glad you could reflect on your adventure and hope you have many more.

    Interesting that you noted the waterfall coming down Black Bear Pass and ignored the building above it. That is a hydroelectric plant that supplied AC electricity to the city of Telluride in 1891. Telluride claims to be the first city to be lit by electric street lights. This probably isn't true, but the fact that the building still stands and it supplied alternating current all the way to the town over 100 years ago is far more impressive than a waterfall.

    Black Bear Pass at 36:00 You fell at the same place my riding buddy on a DRZ400 broke his foot. and went further into the foliage. Your biggest mistake on the steps was being on the steps. the smoothest quickest line is actually right along the edge. Hugging the wall is a typical flatlander tactic. Don't get me wrong, the first time I did it, I bulldoged my bike down while walking alongside. I have never done it with panniers. It was always a day ride while staying in Ouray. Good for you.

    No kidding... I've run rubber over damned near every inch of your ride; mainly because all of it is in my (extended) back yard. You even rode through a couple of places I have lived. Don't think I didn't notice the geographically and chronologically mis-ordered segments of the video. It was fun picking out the places you rode through. Wild that you ran into that couple from Hagerman Pass down in the San Juans.

    The Black Bear "...one small, wrong deflection and...." Great adventure, but a stark reminder that low and light adventure bikes with compact baggage are what is required for this stuff, well, for all but the very talented. Wow! Great video and absolutely stunning scenery!
    I'm surprised, KTM's overheat from stop and go traffic? Did they have some mechanical issues with them?
    Also, do you mind sharing approximately how much was it to ship a bike from Chicago to Colorado?

    • @kdemotorsports
      @kdemotorsports  5 років тому

      The KTMs are kind of known for running hot especially the rear cylinder because of airflow. Moving they’re fine but once air flow stops they get toasty. The twin cylinder ones not singles. No issues with either of them. As far as cost to ship it was splitting gas and trailer rental with John C. He hauled them out so I didn’t have to pay a shipping company. Thanks for watching.

    What temperature did your KTM overheat it? I’ve taken my 1190 to Moab to ride the white rim Trail in August and it was 111°. The bike got up to about 235° A couple of times but never flashed or showed an indication of overheating.

    • @kdemotorsports
      @kdemotorsports  5 років тому

      I don’t remember exactly but it wasn’t that hot. We weren’t dripping in sweat or anything. My best guess was about 80 - 85 degrees. The 990 overheated at almost exactly the same time. This has been the ONLY time it has happened. I’ve ridden in warmer weather and moving slowly so the only thing I can attribute it to was how long we were sitting without moving at all.

    At 33:15. Looks like the spotter was pointing to the right side of the trail to me, where the dirt met the rock? .Anyway the Ktm 990 rider may want to step up a couple sizes of front fork springs, That will prevent that fork dive.

    • @kdemotorsports

      The 990 was definitely not stiff enough on the front end as was obvious there and also later on when it bottomed and blew out the fork seal. The owner upgraded the spring rates after the trip.
