took a second, but I understood your message and how you were trying to express it. Basically get a hold of the vibe/feeling of the crowd and know how to insert a surge to pickup the vibe or slow it down a bit to mellow out the vibe, but all the time show that you have that vibe.
Don't worry about it to much, I've got away with all sorts of naughty hip hop at weddings, birthday parties etc (mixed crowd). Just keep alternating between genres, I've never had anyone complain about explicit lyrics, Just keep the hip hop uptempo and funky so they can dance to it. And ultimately if anyone does complain, just say your playing requests.
Crowd reading can only be obtained by being in front of a crowd, theres no way in hell you can even get remotely close to understanding this principle via theories and talk, and theories and talks may even come into play some 15% of the time, each crowd is so very unique and will generate a different response so yeah there really is no way of gaining skills of crowd reading other than to actually get out there and do it
many cases have occured to me when the owner of the party bring in their own music, sumtime is explicit and i ve have people come up to me telling me to please change it but all i do is try and avoid tracks like that by using the edited versions or simply trying to edit the parts out myself by cutting. one thing that you must not do is play those types of tracks untill everybdy is havin a good time and is dancing because they are not really payin attention to the lyrical content as much
If your a DJ that doesn't dance...well to be completely honest, your really missing out on the biggest djing buzz...connecting with the crowd, it's not about showing off, I probably dance like a twat anyway....but if your giving it some, they love it and you get eye contact and big smiles.... possibly compare it to being a conductor with his orchestra, but to the dancefloor.....well it works for me.....
I can't stand when people call the most pedestrian of things, like "a DJ reading a crowd," a "philosophy." It shows they have absolutely no idea of what philosophy really is.
That was a great analogy!
For every action theres a reaction.
So basicly feel the vibe of the crowd and play off of it.
I've been a mobile/club DJ for 10 years...this man speaks the truth. Long live the Jonathan!

Well said.. Reading the floor is way better than playing what you want to hear yourself.
