After years of work, the first public demo is finally out! Yay!
A couple of things I want to note about the project:
- I've implemented a new ranking system that I feel encourages players to engage with the game's mechanics in the most satisfying way possible, although it might be too difficult to get a gold rank with a level one Sonic (I guarantee it's possible though!)
- Although I tried my best to playtest and create a stable experience, the game is still probably filled with glitches. Let me know if you happen to run into any "unexpected behavior."

well the preloading shaders was probably a good call. i dont think i had any stuttering because of it?
using the opengl driver instead of vulkan doesn't let the game work at all. it just shows the background of the title screen with no music

hey just some feedback i think the speed break animation could use some work honestly sonic looks kinda stiff when using speed break I think you should make him lean forward more or maybe make him bob a bit like in the original also I think for his normal running animation his arms should be a little more spread out
@@sometf2player752 yeah honestly I think they should just stick to the original animations but maybe use a newer model, there was something about secret rings' animations that were really appealing to me. also the fact that the animation sped up so much depending on how fast sonic was going looked kinda goofy but also really made him feel fast, they should keep that imo

I know it’s still a ways off but I hope this can serve as groundwork for a potential Black Knight PC port in the future

Love that my favorite era of Sonic is getting more fan content
So, about my experience with this remake. It's really promising, a good foundation for refining this game for PC. Though there are obviously issues, here are mine:
1. Shader precompilation doesn't seem to be working; first-play stuttering was present.
2. Maybe it's a controller problem and the keyboard is fine, but Sonic feels too sharp to control. A slight strafe and Sonic bumps into walls. A 10% deadzone helped a little bit, but it's just a workaround. This problem was in the original when you used too strong sensitivity settings.
3. Level design doesn't work well with camera-based movement. Sonic was originally on path-rails, so when the path starts to wiggle in this remake, you're expected to somehow adapt your direction and both not lose speed but also strafe properly. My suggestion, if possible, is to try to implement path-traced movement or some automation for tricky spots like that.
Strong points:
1. Compared to the original, it feels really good that Sonic finally feels responsive. No more input lag.
2. As I said, a bit too sharp, but Sonic isn't a slug that needs hours to walk backwards. He can even perform a Homing Attack with a backflip, which feels cool.
3. "NO SUCH THING AS FATE FOR THOSE WHO SPEED" doesn't play e v e r y w h e r e.
4. Making gimmicks like the sidewalk faster is appreciated.

@@KumaPauZ Me personally the main problem I have with this game is that I would like to see you restore the original Sonic and the Secret Rings running animation where he sways side to side, I really enjoy that it upsets me that it seems you ported his Unleashed/Generations running animation where he balls his fists and runs straight forward. Just something I would love to see.

I always assumed that people would ditch the on rail like controls for a more adventure like feel, however I love that you have decided to faithfully remake almost every single detail about this game and have also decided to give this gameplay style another chance and I must say I am really happy that you have, as the level design was created around that gameplay style. This is really impressive so far and I am really looking forward to more.

I've always felt that Secret Rings could be incredibly fun even with its linearity if it forced the player to engage with its mechanics more. That's why I focused on making a new ranking system!
Faithfully? Every detail? Nope.
This remake has a completely different physics engine and it doesn't feel quite right. I am kinda happy that people are giving that gameplay style a second chance though.
As someone who did actually enjoy Secret Rings, this project is quite promising after playing the demo.
The only issues I have with the demo is that the text language option doesn't have the names for the languages other than English and Japanese, and that the steering is a bit on the over sensitive side, at least on an Xbox Series controller. Turning down the dead zone has semi-helped make steering less slippery for me but I do hope there's some additional options to adjust the analog sensitivity in the future, because I can imagine this potentially effecting the upgrades for Sonic's handling should those get implemented in the future. Other than that, great start so far.

As someone whose first Sonic game (barring the Olympics) was Secret Rings, this has me extremely excited
Holy cow mate, this was my dream, i really want to bless for you for this project, this game the only one that i can't play with emulator and can't get console with this game. Only sonic game is not played and finished by me, and seeing this is like my Christmas dream.
Play this today and say my feelings after, but only seeing this right now i can say this is amazing.
Played like i said, this is awesome, main issues are controlling sonic to left right and no full screen for different resolutions, accept those two problems, everything is amazing. Thanks for this demo, hope for updates ❤😊
You're doing the lords work, secret rings is one of my favorite games
If the mid 2000's was the "Dark Era" of Sonic, then we are at the "What if the games were good Era". Glad to see people warming to the potential that Secret Rings had. If you strip the weird motion controls you get a solid boost style Sonic game, not much different from the Wii version of Sonic Unleashed.
I gave this a try and was VERY happy with it! Secret Rings was one of my first wii games and to see it recreated like this is amazing! i will say, the controls in the main stage were a liiittle touchy but i got used to it enough. im SUPER excited for this project!

As someone who was playing this game as a kid on the Wii and has allot of nostalgia for it, I am SO goddamn excited to play this all the way through when it comes out and get to relive the closest thing to playing this game for the first time again.
I cannot believe it took me a month and a week to realize this project exists. This remake is absolutely beautiful and amazing with everything you added and improved.

This was my CHILDHOOD I LOVE IT. My only criticism with this is Sonic's running animation. Not that the animation itself looks bad but it just doesn't look like he's running fast when compared to the OG one. This is especially apparent when doing speed break. Other than that though this is perfect, I'm absolutely surprised at how well you managed to recreate the UI. I wish you luck on the rest of this, I'm sure you will do great!
The VFX for speed/time break is very incomplete. It should look better by the next update!

Just got done playing this. I had a very good time, miles better control than the original so far. The boss was probably a low point for me. I think having to maintain your speed was wonky. And the turning in general is a little slippery. But otherwise so many good things. The change of music in the menu, the texture on Sonic's fur, the ability to jump without sliding, but you still kept the slide in as a mechanic and Im excited to see what you do with it. Honestly the slide was a vibe and Im glad it's still there in some capacity. Great work. Make a Twitter account if you dont already have one so I can follow you right now

This is really solid! I never expected a remake of this game but I'm all up for it as I never played any of the storybook games.

I played the available stages on my Steam Deck (because my pc's graphics are very poor). I didn’t play the original game... even though I had a Wii back in the day I didn't really know about Sonic... but this is cool! The game seems to run and control rather nicely overall so far. I enjoyed this glimpse of experiencing a remade Secret Rings. I hope to get to play more stages in the future and I hope you're able to continue your fabulous work with this!

This is amazing! I've always wanted a remake of this game!
I have a few questions regarding this project though:
-Will story progression be improved? [The original game's story progress can be pretty confusing for new players, maybe marking mandatory missions could help]
-Will new skills be added? [I feel like there's tons of potential for adding new skills, though I don't have any suggestions currently]
-Could mod support be available in the near future? [This one is more of a cherry on top and isn't necessary for me to love the project, but potential music or model swap mods could greatly expanded enjoyment for this project]

Hi! Thanks for the support! To answer your questions:
1. Yes! One of the main goals for the project is to make progression more intuitive!
2. Some new skills will definitely be added. One that I'm thinking of is an "autorun" skill that imitates the original game's control style.
3. As the project is being made with the Godot game engine, it shouldn't be too difficult for people to create mods. In fact, some players have already started taking a crack at it :D

Amazing demo, I see the potiental for this as someone who loves the storybook games and just wished it wasnt fully motion controls. If I were to give feedback I think the base no wind speed should be faster as well as ways to adjust how much sonic moves between full tilts left and right. Other than that I can't wait to see more!
