Born and raised dirt poor in central Scotland in an old mining town (Shotts) and left for the shores of California in 1986. Always loved this song and it is deeply sentimental. (Us Scots are a soppy lot) Just like "Bogie" I've worked my ass off my entire life. Finally, in 2020, I bought the 70' Yacht of my dreams and it's new name is... Dignity! Only wish my parents were alive to visit one last time from Scotland to see their wee boy and grand kids singing along to this song on board it's namesake.

I love Deacon Blue, I used to listen to dignity when i was an apprentice joiner, had to walk miles to work everyday, but i loved it. Some years later, I found myself homeless, and I promised myself if I ever got a place to live that I would blast this song and have a party. After 4 yrs in shelters I got a place to live, and my mate Bill made me a wood plaque with the word dignity, and I had my party. I know its a ramble, but well, its true.
Well well well dignity you were aptly named this song is beautiful tried to go through life with dignity and Grace as well as just being yourself be true to yourself

The hairs are standing up on the back of my neck listening to this haunting song and shivers down my spine , the best ever song and knocks spots off the latest so-called 'chart-toppers' and , of course , they are Scots. Absolutely Brilliant!!
Oh my!!! Let me tell you a story: I used to listen and love this song when I was a teen (im 50 now). Tried to pick some words and then read the lyrics of the álbum por on the cassette print. I was pasionate about English language and learned quite a lot listening to my songs in the 80s.Completly forgotten all about this song and group until I watched by chance the videoclip and all my fellings came back, I could feel just as I felt when I was a lovely teenager listening to music in my room. It was so special to see the handsome singer again and listen to this song after such a bunch of years...and the lyrics...pure poetry. Now from a mature perspective I understand very well what dignity is all about. LOVE from Pilar (Bilbao)

DEACON BLUE . " Dignity" .1988 "Dignity" is a song by Deacon Blue, which was the band's first official release. It is one of their most popular songs and it is usually played as the final song at concerts. It received the most public votes for the 1980s songs in the Scotland's Greatest Album contest run by STV in 2011, and was featured on the 12 track compilation. It was also sung at the closing ceremony at the 2014 Commonwealth Games held in Glasgow. The song tells the story of a litter-collector working for the local council who tells the singer/narrator that he is saving his money to buy a dinghy, which he will call "Dignity". He will take it on travels, proudly telling people that he bought it with money he had saved.
I have lived at the other end of the world for 38 years. This song reminds me of Scotland. and I relate so much to the lyrics. So proud of my roots and of my country that produced this brilliant band.
What a great song from one of the best bands ever. I saw them live and they were amazing. When they did this it almost made me cry. If people don't like this why come here and watch and comment. show them the exit door and tell them not to come back.
What a lovely song sends a tear to my eye everytime I hear it. I don't know the man which the song is about but you can tell he is a good being. From the lyrics in this song am guessing he is one of the few humble people that doesn't ask for anything but deserves the best from life. Because of their morals and values they are rich, no amount of money can buy dignity! :-)

I remember hearing this song on the radio back in the mid 80's. I really felt something and bought the album (remember those round, black, vinyl things?) Just yesterday, I drove home in my NEW, 2018, jeep Wrangler JK. I found the EXACT MODEL, COLOR, DRIVE TRAIN, HUGE SUSPENSION, GORGEOUS TIRES & RIMS that I've dreamed about for almost 20 years. I've driven used junks my whole life and never even sat in a vehicle with only 40 miles on it. Now I own one. I have been a blue collar, working stiff, bum my whole life. I clean up after wealthy people, fix their broken stuff, do construction and home repairs in mansions that I cannot imagine living in and, yes,...I pick litter off the gutter, it's my job for my landlord. Driving home last night in the snow, I was in some heavy traffic, and I noticed an awful lot of people gawking at MY JEEP! I always said, if I was to get a Jeep, I didn't want one like EEEEEVERYBODY ELSE'S Jeep, since there's practically one on every corner. No, I wanted something special, a REAL MAN'S JEEP, and I finally got it. For anyone who knows Jeeps, it's a Rocky Ridged-up BEAST! AND I paid cash for it. The bank doesn't own it. I do. As I was driving home last night, I was reminded of this song, that I haven't heard in 20 years, but still remembered most of the lyrics to. I have to admit, it didn't just bring a smile, but I actually got a little choked up. When they ask me how I got her, I'll say:"I saved my money. Isn't she pretty...." yeah, every dog has his day.
Been looking for this song for more than10years. Didn't know the lyrics and the name. Then i heard a song called "you saw the whole of the moon" which has a similar rhythm. All of a sudden i remembered the lyrics.lol.wonderful song

Deacon Blue from Glasgow .Scotland .Fantastic song .and the sail up the West coast is fantastic .Especially the stop off at Portavadie .Sheer luxury ........x
There's a story that this song was inspired by a council road sweeper in Cumnock, Ayrshire called Turner Vallance (still alive and well!) where Lorraine McIntosh grew up (as I did - I remember her well!). Anybody know if there is any truth in this? Anyway, it fits Turner's life pretty well, regardless! A really nice guy, who took pride in everything he did and in the people he met everyday!
@@ionamcclements408 True. Ricky wrote it. But maybe she suggested the initial bit of the story? Was back in my hometown a few weeks ago and Turner is still alive and well. Must be in his 90s now...

Favourite song of all time! It's about having a dream and following it. Nothing wrong with that!
Cheers from France 🇫🇷🏴
There's a story that this song was inspired by a council road sweeper in Cumnock, Ayrshire called Turner Vallance (still alive and well!) where Lorraine McIntosh grew up (as I did - I remember her well!). Anybody know if there is any truth in this? Anyway, it fits Turner's life pretty well, regardless! A really nice guy, who took pride in everything he did and in the people he met everyday!

100% true.
Not true. Ricky wrote this, not Lorraine. X
@@ionamcclements408 True. Ricky wrote it. But maybe she suggested the initial bit of the story? Was back in my hometown a few weeks ago and Turner is still alive and well. Must be in his 90s now...
@@BreekieMe I’ll ask her next time I see her but I don’t think so. I’m sure she said it was pretty much all of his doing that one x
