  • The best season of swells continue. This time on our Swell Slab Chase we venture to a spot that is more dangerous than anywhere else. Even body boarders find this wave super difficult to surf. The wave is once again miles from anywhere and breaks on a very shallow reef creating some of the thickest barrels on the planet. So dangerous that on this trip Dylan Longbottom broke 4 ribs and punctured his lung on his first wave and ended up in ICU. This edit features Dylan, Moroccan slab master Jerome Sahyoun, Tassie's up & comer Noah Hassett, Sydneys Kipp Caddy and big wave legend super star Nathan Florence. Watch till the end.

IDK, I learned to surf (sorta) in 1978 East Coast, USA. 18 stitches in my face on my very first wave, but never stopped. Maybe going through some hardship (chased by cops, for surfing?? fisherman launching lead sinkers at us, jet ski not invented yet, much less towboards, no lifeguards, no safety vests) I always thought towing in was cheating. Part of surfing for me is wave selection, position, paddling & standing up while making the drop, plus recovering from a wipeout all by yourself. Truly man vs. nature !! I understand they're towing into waves that you can't paddle into. But then I see people paddle into them (certain days/certain swells.) I guess it's just a necessary evil these days.
Respect to all that charge. Mad respect to the fellow old timers. Thanks for posting, another great video. I'll end this with a joke....Surfer WALKS into a hospital. Dr says, "You've got 4 broken ribs & a punctured lung !!" Surfer says, "Ahhhh, good one doc. Paddy put you up to that ??" Kookmeyer sez, "Those surfers are crazy !!"

Yeah we bet the paddle-in boys were thrilled with the tow-in crew turning up and hogging the waves. But then the paddle-ins couldn't get into them anyway. Except one paddler nearly got decapitated by the tow rope. Where did they launch the jet ski from? The longer ones close out obviously. Without putting the moch on them if you surf waves like this sooner-or-later you are going to get hurt. Pretty much every big wave charger ends up hurt (albeit Dylan and Kipp have been doing it for a long while now ... Dylan did his knee the other year too?)
