Start of film to 1.04 is the Junction opposite the Morris Dancers, the Coach seems to be returning from Southport on its way to Burscough and disappearing down Bescar Brow Lane..

This film appears genuine to us and we can pick out many, many places that we either knew of or that are mainly still standing in Southport. Infact if you look closely as they arrive at the pier front just to the right on the Marine Bridge is one of the stansions that now stands in the Kings Gardens in Southport that over looks the Marine Lake - there was two but one has gone 'walkies'!

Not 100% sure but 1:04 on looks similar to the junction of Vicarge lane and Charnleys lane in Banks village (1:56 ),but some buildings not recognised wether there demolished now not sure ,the house on far right 1:56 1:57 in distance resembles the old farm down the lane correct me if am wrong ,after all its 122 years ago

From looking at street view of the house on the corner in Burscough, it appears that the road has been widened significantly since then (for obvious reasons). Also, has the shot moves across to the right the road beside the house (Square Lane) seems to give the impression that it's on a slope or going over a bridge, but in street view it appears to be just a flat road. Unless it was once a sloped road and they altered it.

Hi yes it is Square Lane Bridge, it goes over the then Liverpool to Preston Railway. The railway was changed to a single track Railway and now uses Diesel trains from Ormskirk to Preston, the rest of the line Liverpool to Ormskirk is now electric. The white cottage was demolished as it came over the path, not a problem in 1900 but in the 1960`s it was a hazard to pedestrian and made a blind corner for motorists. (I often thought it may have been a Toll House but I am not sure as there was one just up the road opposite the Bull & Dog Pub).
The road was there first so when the railway came along it was not square on to the road so a sharp bend was put in at the top of the hill to make the road square to the railway and thus the bridge span could be as short as possible not a problem to the horse and cart but a bit of a hazard to faster vehicles.
The brick portion of the bridge is the arch bit at the top of the hill all the rest is a hedge.
The road was widened in about 1966 / 67 The houses on the left lost some of their gardens and the hedge on the right was moved over near the junction but not all the way up the bridge. The junction was widened and straightened covering the white cottage footings. I can remember.them widening the slope at the top of the hill on the right I cant remember them building any walls but they may have shortened the wall of the bridge on the right to straighten the bend a bit.
I seem to remember the work being done to accommodate larger and longer wagons and just in time too as I remember during 68 / 70 vehicles that seemed as big as a house trundled over the bridge on their way to Liverpool with 2 or 3 large boulders on them , they were building Seaforth Dock (Container base) they may have had other stone in them that I could not see after all I was a kid and I was smaller than the wheels of the vehicles.
Is there any other streets on the film that you are unsure were they are?

Anyone know where those shots were filmed at the start, particularly the where the camera is moving along with the chap with the sign on his back walking in front? (what was that all about?) and the cottages along the cobbled roads?. Looks rather a rural place to me than Southport, could it be somewhere like Scarisbrick, Burscough etc?. Or maybe Banks, Churchtown or Crossens?.

1.09 to 2.06 is the junction of Liverpool Road South and Square Lane in Burscough, the coach is travelling on Liverpool Rd S (A59) towards Rufford / Parbold, the house in the centre of the shot has not changed much, the cottage on the left, the white one by the finger post was demolished in the late 50`s or early 60`s but before 1962 as I can remember playing on the foundations on the way to school every morning. The wall on the right looked the same up to about 10 or so years ago when it was altered, but is still there.

@@jayheritage1540 Cheers for that, I had a feeling it was somewhere around Parbold or Burscough.

Why has everyone got the same clothes? At the beginning what was that about with the horn, are they all drunk? In fact what is the bloke with the sign doing, what does it say? Everyone look like actors. After all the world is a stage.

@@ArnoldClarke Are you taking the mick?. Cameras back then were big and cumbersome and took a long time to set up, hence the people "playing for the camera", and not forgetting someone with a camera was a strange thing to witness and would attract curiosity.

Ive seen better images from the 1850s Dag. People don’t act that way. Get of the bus and play a massive horn?? Devolution.
