Gosh those were the days, everyone knew their place, we all enjoyed life and looked forward to little luxuries and the occasional holiday, pace of life was just right.
I live in Southport, it's a crying shame how it is now, shabby, dirty, none of these amusements left, pier is closed, most of shops gone. A once beautiful town left by councils to rot.
Having had childhood holidays in Southport during the 50s and 60's (where we had relatives, including some called Mort on Heathfield Rd!) this brought many happy memories, but I must admit that when I last visited around 15 years ago it had lost a lot of its air of refinement. Ho hum,
I go to southport a lot the pier needs repairing pronto it's nice to stroll.along and brings a lot of tourists the olden days are obviously better than these times but let's be positive things will get better eventually
Sefton Council has neglected Southport massively. Its a rundown city. The hospital, I worked, I counted my days to get out. Nurses shortage was attempted to fill by bringing loads of nurses from India. Although the nurses were pleasant their jobless husbands and screaming children ran wild in the local community. Despicable.
It isn't - only Birkdale and Churchtown are still half-decent. Very sad. Rubbish politicians and the dumbing down of people's values and expectations have made the resort of Southport a holiday desert devoid of any sort of quality family fun.
I moved to Southport in 1986 from London it was a very lively place back then NOT now I am afraid it’s declining rapidly in lord street there about 30 shops CLOSED the town is being left to decline lord Street is dead hardly nobody shops there anymore I remember Southport when you hardly had room to walk in lord street now is becoming a GOUST town.
Absolutely wonderful film! Not quite Southport's (much) earlier 'golden years', but certainly better than its current years. Ever the optimist, let's hope these past few decades will be shown to be a blip in Southport's history. Better years to come?.....
A ‘bygone’ era, actually not that long ago. One or two generations ago. I much simpler time - rationing had gone by 1953/4 Everyone used to go to these towns by the sea. Everyone looked well dressed and wore a hat, both men and women. Look at Southport now ☹️☹️🫤🫤😗😗👎👎👎👎 🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴
Get this - the McDonalds in Southport Town Centre closed some years ago. That's where we are now. Dwindling footfall and a town in decline. Just today Wilko's closing down sale. Ghost Town...
Such a shame how things are now. Its disgusting how sefton council have run things. Instead of giving themselves big fat bonuses for messing places up, they should be putting money in theses places
YES! How long has the pier been closed now, a year or is it approaching two years!? How come Merseyside council have this idea that you must close everything immediately but do not start any demolition of that site for years ie The New Theatre Complex, closed and barricaded off for an age and nothing is done, don't they realize this loses money and looks damn unsightly!
Fantastic what a wonderfully serene decade the 50s was- where family values and morals were at their highest.
As others have said it's a lovely reminder of better times for the town
Remember going to Southport with then girlfriend in 1959 - both of us young - and innocent. Times have changed.
Those were the days! A great advertising film, with a clear speaking voice (BBC announcer).
Great film but heart-breaking to see Southport now compared to this!
Superb film. Thanks for posting!

@@johnbatch9276 Wishful thinking .....
Happier days
Things are worse now than they ever were in the fifties sixties. The system is rotten to the core. 🇬🇧
Absolutely... Corrupt all over the country. No pride in anything anymore.
Inreresting video! Love to see how Southport is still such a nice town in 2023!

Agree. Decan has not visited Southport in 2020s.

I would have gone to Southport in 1956 when I was 8 . Enjoyed the outdoor baths but the water wasn,t that warm. It was a great fun venue.
The wonderful fifties my childhood so far removed from today's rat race

So devastating to see how much grandeur, splendour and opulence Southport has lost since then.

As is most costal towns, Rhyl , Blackpool etc. Its only the ones on Merseyside that are still decent , formby beach, New Brighton , southport .etc
20 shops are closed down in Lord Street right now 2024
Reminds me of Harty Enfields sketch Grayson Mr Chumby Warner .... ₱Hsve you bean to Southport again Grayson" 😎👍.

My nana is at 2:23 😂😂
This video is about Southport, England, Not about Southport on the Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia.
Sort the pier ffs

Where are all the black and brown people?
Think it was more like the 60s when the population got more 'mixed' certainly outside of London it was.
@@deniseroney Very poor cope señor
When children could be beaten by cruel parents, and children born out of wedlock ostracized by religious hypocrites. Such "family values" in the 1950s
