Go Woke, Go Broke is often repeated by those against the movement of aggressive diversity pushing. But does the saying have any real power? Does the content in media truly matter to Hollywood? Does it matter anywhere else?

Diversity is okay. Forced diversity is not. Growing up in the 1990s and 2000s, the shows and cartoons I watched had diverse casts (Magic School Bus, Filmore, Shelby Wu, Kenan & Kel, Jackie Chan Adventures, etc). They all had characters with defined traits that you connected with, and they just so happened to look different than me. These days, a diverse character is simply a character who isn't a straight white man, and that's it. We as an audience can't connect with characters that have no character.
Without rehashing the essays already made on this channel, High Guardian Spice is the best (or worst?) example of why woke entertainment fails. Even when they made their own universe, stories, and characters, the writing, art, and audio were abysmal. They likely hired their staff because of their "diversity" and were likely terrified of hurting each others' feelings by giving each other criticism to improve the show.
Contrast this with two shows that are diverse and are actually pretty good:
~Kipo and the Age of the Wonderbeasts: A show based on a web comic with its own characters and world. The characters have definitive personalities and traits: our main cast consists of the optimistic everyman, the cold and untrusting survivor, and the chill guys who show that humans and mutes are capable of being friends; it isn't the mixed race girl, the black girl, and the black guys. While it loses some oomph by the third season, the supporting characters and environments are varied, the villains are genuine threats, and the fight scenes are dynamic and a blast to watch.
~Carmen Sandiego: A reboot and reimagining of the franchise we 90s kids grew up with, it manages to respectfully reference the older media (computer games, cartoons, and TV game shows) while telling its own story. They travel the world and experience all sorts of cultures (without ever disrespecting white cultures), the main cast is competent, and the bad guys are evil because they just like being evil (and happen to be quite diverse themselves).
We just want compelling stories with memorable characters.
And yes, I would love a read through video of "I Am Not Starfire".

The main problem with allot of “Woke,” media, is that they fail to actually make a good character with personality and flaws. And instead just make a parody of a character. And no a person sexually, or orientation is not a character trait.
It’s fare better to have a entertaining character that just so happens to be gay, or any other kind of diverse than try and put the diversity in the forefront. Because then they are not actual characters.
And so many people try and make these interpretations when they don’t know what makes them work in the first place. Take the original animated Mulan movie, Vs the live action one.
The animated one hade a strong female character that spoke her mind, defined gender norms, and was willing to risk her life for her friends and family. And work hard to help accomplish these things, yet was also awkward and clumsy at times.
The live action movie just had her be a perfect martial arts master from birth! With her being perfect as is, and the issue apparently be that she was “hiding herself.” She’s cold, detached, with no personality. But the problem is this is not a strong female character. This is just the same toxic masculinity people like to complain about, just having a woman do it.
Also yes I’d love you’re take on “I am not Starfire.”

This right here, ladies and gentlemen. I keep forgetting that Mulan is the perfect example of female leads being beloved and falling flat on its face.

And sometimes writers trying to be inclusive do stuff thst doesn't sit right with fans, especially lately in comic books with some of the things DC and Marvel have been doing to get brownie points for "inclusivity" but just straight up fail because it is shoved down our throats and forced to *_NOT_* be actually something well done. It is the biggest problem I see with "woke" media--- it has to destroy what is established to hoist itself on its own petard, but then it reveals how shallow, crappy, and empty it is deep down as it goes.

I think diversity, when executed well, adds to the depth and quality of characters rather than reducing it.
We’re intrigued by stories in the first place because they offer us a portal into another world. We get to see our own emotions and experiences reflected in the lives of interesting, powerful people who are in many ways, just like us.
You’re absolutely right that we can recognise experiences and emotions in anyone no matter what they look like (courage, isolation, shame, joy, belonging, redemption) because they’re all part of the human experience.
But I disagree with the idea that minority representation is superficial. The experiences you have due to being a part of a marginalised group certainly don’t define you, but they do influence who you are and the life you live.
My defining characteristics aren’t being gay, Asian or neurodiverse, but for better or worse those characteristics have certainly shaped my life, my experiences and my perspective. They’re a part of my family, community, culture, and they directly affect the way I relate to myself and others.
Seeing people “like you” able to overcome struggles you face and find love, purpose, acceptance and community can be a powerful thing. Especially if you’re getting the feedback that you’re broken, or facing barriers others around you are not due to discrimination or disability.
But this kind of deeper, realistic representation does actually require good writing. You can slap a label on any character, and it doesn’t mean it’s going to resonate with the community you’re trying to represent.
I think the key to meaningful representation is reflecting the major emotions and experiences shared by people from a certain community. (For example: authenticity, shame, nonconformity & found family are big themes within queer culture).
And otherwise just… write them like you’d write any other character. Make them feel fully human. It takes depth, subtlety and skill, but I think diversity can be potentially life-changing when done right.
A few pieces of diverse media I recommend:
    - Arcane
    - Avatar: The Last Airbender
    - Star Trek, Deep Space Nine
    - Killing Eve
    - Disco Elysium
    - Our Flag Means Death
    - Heartstopper
    - Spider-Man: Into The Spiderverse

    Another great video!
I don't really begrudge the big woke push into cape comics. About when it happened (late 2000s-early 2010s) D.C and Marvel were facing a demographics crisis. Their audience was old, getting older and not buying as many comics. The expected boost from the movies did not materialize, and their efforts to attract the younger generation did not work well enough. They had to try something. And hey, Social Justice stuff was popular on twitter/tumbler, why not try that? Comics always had a foot in social issues, and I'm sure there were people in the companies pushing it with sincerity. Keeping comics just the way they were was just a death sentence, so they made a gamble. (btw manga sales were falling at this time too so the companies had no reason to take any inspiration from them)
Of course, as it turns out woke people don't buy many floppies either. I think western comics have had improved sales in recent years, but nothing matching the explosive sales of the youth market and manga. Marvels standout best selling and most read comic of last year was Deadpool: Samurai, done by a Japanese team for the Japanese market. The "I'm not starfire" graphic novel (along with some romance focused teen titans stuff) is part of a successful push to get more DC books into Scholastic book sales and under the eyes of school children. Kids with their parents money and motivation to buy something to read at school are far more willing to shell out cash for products than the average comic book enthusiast. I can't say much for the indie scene, but the smaller comic book companies with manga licenses tend to be doing better than those without.

They rely WAY too much on labels and fitting people into nice little boxes without realising they are restricting and stunting themselves both creatively and as a person. People are not monoliths and will cross boundaries and enjoy shit based not exclusively on one or two characteristics. No two people are the same and I swear it pisses em off that people are often wildly unique and unpredictable, like for example people who enjoy gory fucked up horror movies while also loving shit like animal crossing.
Hell, their heavy restrictions and use of checklists doesn't even appeal to their OWN crowds and I don't know if they are being wilfully ignorant that when you make shit specifically to appeal to like one or two people than you wont get mass appeal or if they just genuinely don't understand most people don't make decisions based on the colour of their skin/sexuality/gender ect

I just wish these people made diverse AND interesting characters. It's like they think "let's make an x character" and just throw a generic backstory on them and call it a day. Cuz it generally makes diversity and minorities look bad and it makes it seem like it's impossible for a minority character to be good, which isn't true!

You are touching upon some of my own thoughts there at the end. Take The Rings of Power. I can't speak for everyone, but I can tell you I would not give two shits about black dwarves and elves if they were incidental. IE, they just happened to cast some black thespians in the roles. But that's not what happened, they did it on purpose as a selling point. That to me is gross.
I have consumed all kind of media that was aimed at other demographics than my own. "Isms" are not the problem, it's the pandering that turns my stomach and turns me off.

I still like the video by the way.

Imagine you were playing poker with friends. But you had an agreement that you'd play three games. And the loses/wins over the course of the three games would be pooled together at the end.
You lost 150 dollars the first game. You won 300 dollars the second game. You lost 125 dollars the third game.
At the end of the night you lost 25 dollars. It's great that you made 300 dollars your second game. But it was a "flop" in that it didn't offset your losses from the other two games.

at the 3:30 mark i can relate i use to work as a cook at the biker bar. i had my fair share of fuck ups at that job but i learned from it and didn't make the same mistake twice. i go to high school in a very upper middle class area so a good amount of the kids and teacher have to be woke so they aren't abandoned by their friends. also funny thing is my mother taught me all about sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me, and personal responsibly and over stuff to make me a functioning member of the world and she wanted to make me a woke activist and asks me if i am becoming a republican every time i am not 100% on board. now i am being pushed more towards the right because of my mom and the other people that they are super tolerant. one girl called me a inbred homophobic Mexican cause i yelled across the lunch room asking a dude wearing a dress why he was wearing a dress. i found out i hurt his feelings later and told him i was sorry cause i didn't mean that. but the girl that was trying to stand up for him saw it as a reason to be a complete cunt. so it ended wit me calling her a cunt and leaving. shit like that and people wonder why i am so edgy. also my mother wants me to be a woke activist even though i am likely gonna have a career in construction. you don't see woke people in blue collar jobs. cause they wouldn't last long.

Pressuring is a form of forcing, and doing either of these will lead to resentment; when you were growing up, how annoyed or angry did it make you when your parents or teachers forced things upon you?
In order for change to take hold and be effective, it needs to be organic. Look at the gay marriage movement: For decades, their message was "We just want to be treated like everyone else, be a part of the community, and live our private lives in peace." As time went on and people began to see that, yes, these are people who are just trying to live their lives in peace and not the monsters that they were once thought of to be. Now the movement has been taken over by people whose message is "We want special treatment, demonize those that don't 100% fit our beliefs, and show off our kinks in public parades; if you disagree with any of that, you're a bigot." And then they wonder why people are turning their backs on the movement.

Great so that wouldn't be called WOKE, but I'm happy to debate if you're willing!
WOKE is the performative act or insincere push to look inclusive. All the while the characters suffer due to their identity being tied to superficial characteristics.
Being WOKE to me is similar to being ignorant. Pressuring people is never the right way to get what you want or make them understand you.
