Great build with some good ideas. You can get semi-spherical nail decorations of all sizes which are suitable for bosses. ;)

To elaborate on the figurehead info, figureheads were used to keep sea serpents away while on the ocean but, on land, they were removed so as not to scare the natural woodland spirits.

You called it a rudder but it's actually a steerboard which is where we get starboard from.
Yeah you right but i found both appellations on ship plans/blueprints, since the steerboard is a specific type of rudder. I used the shorter term for enonciation's purpose since I'm a foreign speaker, but you're right Steerboard is more specific. Thanks for your input ! Cheers!

For the rudder. It looks like your reference photo has a metal band on the top attachment point. I saw a video where a guy took metal wire and pounded it flat to make a metal strap. I'm thinking that would work beautifully for that metal band at the top.
The rope pulleys made from the beads are... I'm just at a loss for words. So beautiful.
I'm gonna have to say that, for all of the incredible effort you put into building this ship, you could have made the hull out of coffee stirrers and just stained them to get the color you want.
My wife and kids thought I was crazy when I carved door hinges out of popsicle sticks. Then I showed them the oars you made.
Yeah saw the attachment too, couldn't put it on while fixing the parts together and then forgot it altogether afterwards lol, I have yet to add the piece, thanks for the reminder! A flatten metal wire could do the trick, or even just a paper band painted leather because this hinge was often made either of rope or leather for flexibility.
Actually concerning the hull I started the project with coffee stirrers and it worked rather well, but the process was long and tricky to get the right curvature. I wanted the longship to be doable by novice crafters, hence I chose to use cardboard, it's a lot easier to get into shape, even if it's slightly less good looking. I tried to find the best compromise quality/difficultywise.
The oars were defenetly long and boring to make, ( yet not nearly as tedious than engraving stones patterns on the large sets of modular walls/towers i've built last year!!!) regardless if you can come up miniature oars already casted defenetly go for that option! thanks for your feedback! Cheers!
@@LandvaettrsLair , I was thinking about it this morning and it occurred to me that you could use the cardboard to make a sort of template for the stir sticks. I haven't really thought it all the way through, but I think it could be made to work.
I have an FDM 3D printer and was thinking that it wouldn't be too awful to just print the oars. Or, maybe, just print the blade end and design it so that it would fit over a toothpick. The trouble is that it really wouldn't print very well because of the mechanical limitations of FDM printing. There *might* be a way to orient it so that it works. (It's the round bottom that is the trouble. Another option for things like that is to cut them in half so that the bottom is flat but then you have to manage to glue it together perfectly. And superglue bonds PLA just about as fast as it bonds skin: Nearly instantly.)

I watched the live crafting vids of this build as they were coming out. It is nice to see them all cut together for the final product, man.
Well done! Lots of great ideas and executions of tricks here. In particular, using the wire insulation for the curved detailing on the mastheads, and the elastic string for the top ropes.

I love it, I make all my terrain, buildings, etc out of card board and other recycled materials and I absolutely love the details and effort you put into this long boat.
I will be making my long boats like this for now on. excluding the sail, as I have a sail system I love (not as nice as yours, yet one I love).

Ps, a few years back I made a 1/100 scale waterline model of an 11th century Byzantine dromon, a twin masted double decker warship made from glued wood, fully rigged and fitted with full complement of crew (15mm minis and benched oarsmen sculpted from epoxy putty).
I am not ashamed of the result, but now wish I had seen your video first.

This is terrific, amazing attention to detail especially with the shields and ropes.
I like how you use glue in your paint. I thought that I was the only one that did that. I mix glue in my Joint Compound to make it more stronger for terrain when I use it.
Yeah hardening is pretty much required of a basecoat of something, especially if it's made ou of cardboard!

I am making mine with a sail made from woven wool. I am weaving it on cardboard with self spun sheep wool.

SO cool! And the detail is great! I would use a round paper punch (you can get many different sizes at the craft store) to cut out the shields. Makes very quick work of the task! Great job!

Very nice build! To strengenth the hull you can add a sheet of styrene unter the base because this is only paper. The dragonheads, the Shieldrows and the accessories are awesome.

Nah the base of the ship wouldnt be flush with the table with added thickness(could bé added during the built tho), it's quite sturdy with the woodglue and the coffee stirrers as is, but i'm defenetly gonna add a coat of modgepodge on the base for good measure and a black sheet of paper of esthaetics. Fantastic model. There are oar style coffee stirrers made with plastic that may work so you don't have to build it from scratch. They are called paddle stirrers.

I really like this build. Very believable and the choices you made to make it more useful in play are quite clever.
A couple of comments:
* Your standing rigging (stays) is very believable, but the sail really needs running rigging. On a longship, this would normally be just a line running to each lower corner of the sail to hold it down and adjust its angle relative to the breeze.
* The stem and stern posts are a bit vertical for my taste.
* Wooden hulls were commonly painted to reduce the damage done by shipworms, barnacles, and the like. See this image (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Longship#/media/File:Tapisserie_bato1.jpg) for what might be a fairly contemporaneous image.
* But (at least on later ships, I don't know that there is any evidence one way or the other for longships) the deck was normally just sanded smooth with stones.
* For shield bosses, you might want to look for cabochon glass beads. They're close to the right shape, can be found in a variety of sizes, cheap, and really easy to use.
But again, that's mostly nitpicking. This is a really good build tutorial. Thank you.
Thanks! Yeah I considered most of these and discarded them mostly for tabletop reasons...
* I initaially wanted to add rigs on the sails (they acually have ha bunch of them to adjust, and there are also huge cross beams allowing the sail to shift) but it made for a LOT of ropes & parts. The deck was gonna become pretty much unaccessible for miniatures so I chose to sacrifice realism for efficiency.
* There's actually a variety of different stern and stem post, at least If i take into consideration the different archeological plans I looked into...
*Also wanted to paint the hull at first, taking the beautyful Draken Harald Hårfagre as a model... but choose a more neutral look so that the ship could change identity more easily!
* the floor rafters are sanded but more or less proeminent from one ship reconstrution to another... another alternative could be to use a thin strip of cardboard to suggest the rafters while keeping flatness.
*The cabochons is a good idea, I couldnt find any that were THAT small but didn't check the internet, if it's the case it's defenetly the right choice!

The shield bose; buy a sheet of dressmaking stick on half circles, sold at most craft shops, they come in silver or gold, costs approx £1 for 150 plus half circles.
Unsure what you meant by dresssmaking "sticks". Did you mean dresssmaking pins? Could work if it's the case, provided you Can cut them in half...thanks for your Feedback !
@@LandvaettrsLair , No, you misread, they are "stick on" , craft shops sell them, all kinds of half circle stick on's. Like you i make many of these for my armies, i cannot afford to buy the expensive shield transfers so i print roman or viking or byzantine shields, glue them to card like you, then peel off one of the half circles and stick them on. There are many types, some have patterns. Just stumbled upon this channel - Dude, your attention to detail is amazing.
And you explain and show everyting in a very understandable way.
Since I've seen some other videos of people building longships for Tabletop, I have to admit yours is by far the most enjoyable and impressing. Like, everyone else makes cuts because "it's supposed to be for wargaming, doesn't have to be totally accurate" while you take your time to add as much detail and stuff as possible, with the option to always remove that stuff and keep it modular. Just amazing.
Glad you liked! To be fair I had to make several cuts for tabletop practicality... The level of detail and historicity is more a matter of preference I guess. I tend to go for an overall realistic look but I totally get why most crafters would want easier to craft, or more fantasy driven ships, in the end only fun matters! Yeah, most people make their detail cuts for wargaming because they can fit more miniatures and stuff on it and I can completely understand that. But iirc you're the first channel I found that is going for those details that I am actually interested in (want to start making my own terrain and a longship is definitely smth I want in my collection so this video will be very helpful). For my part, I am more interested in all those small details that make the terrain more realistic and the fact that you make alot of your stuff modular is very helpful aswell, because right now I don't have the time or space to build a lot of terrain for every possible situation so the fact that you show how to make terrain that you can create different sceneries with (for example your shop fronts and your fountain) is much appreciated. And after binge watching some of your videos, I am in love with your style. (Btw - your drawings are damn good as well!)

@@RinoGato glad you like my crafts! We have the same concerns as far modularit is concerned. Unless youre into dioramas, or have a crazy amount of time and storage space modularity is paramount!
@@LandvaettrsLair Exactly! And thanks to your videos, I've got a lot of stuff to look into for crafting more modular terrain. Especially with your lighter colors on the walls, they fit a larger variety of climates compared to the typical darker colors most people use.
From your walls, over the palisades up to the Roundhouses (actually the video which lead me to your channel, started with Oathmark miniatures recently and their models have a very celtic/nordic look to them, so I really want to make a fortified village with roundhouses to fit them), there's so much I can use.
I am really looking forward to try it.

No lines from the sail and spar ends, which were used to anchor the corners of the sail(otherwise it would just flap around in the wind), and to turn the spar to suit the wind direction
Yes of course. I intended to put them initially along with the cross beams used to brace the clew of the square sail to windward, but ultimately chose to ignore them to preserve both gameplay surface and fast setup. This isnt a model for say, its good looking but primeraly meant for tabletop miniatures games. But sure you can go ahead and add these elements very easily if you see fit. Thanks for your input!

There is a type of toothpick that is flat with a wide flat end, I believe they are party toothpicks. Those could be trimmed into oura I bet

You can cheat a little with the planks,if you stick them to paper first you can cut them to size in multiples thus speeding up the cutting a little

You could have used nail art half pearls for the boss there is also some very nice nail art that could be used for the shields paint work 😹. Loved the build thanks for sharing🤗🤗 the groved beads you can find at PandaHall as well as the nail art 😊😊

Je fais partie d'une asso qui fait de la reconstitution historique mais plutôt fin XIV ème début XV ème... J'ai aussi du matos viking parce que je pensais initialement intégrer une troupe spécialisée dans le scandinave !

How possible would it be to make a template of this? Like something we can print out to follow? Because this is absolutely beautiful and I'd love to get the exact dimensions- eyeballing it is not my strong suit lol. Great work!
I used this schematic to build mine: www.themodelshipwright.com/news/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/gokstad_schematic.jpg ... but I did eyeball and adapt a few things for my specific needs...Sorry didn't make any kind of template. I don't think you can get it wrong here if you stick to the overall proportions. Besides viking ships were VERY diverse in shape and sizes. Cheers!

great work, as usual. I always wonder why you, or anyone, would use actual use to represent wood on a craft. Here I see you using both cardboard and coffee steers. Why not using cardboard for the ship's floor too? It really seems like it's the paint that gives the likeness of the wood, rather than the texture.

Yeah the texture came out ok on the strakes because the cardboard was slightly textured and the thick basecoat did the rest, I mean you could defenetly use the cardboard as floor! However i found the texture better on the stirers, also they can be grooved further more with heavy grained sand paper whereas the aglomerate cardboard tears up under Sand paper of metalic brushes.
