Lyrics:
Tonight we ride, right or wrong
Tonight we sail, on a radio song
Rescue me, should I go down
If I stay too long in trouble town
Oh, yeah, you wreck me, baby
Yeah, you break me in two
But you move me, honey
Yes, you do
Now and again, I get the feeling
Well, if I don't win, I'm a-gonna break even
Rescue me, should I go wrong
If I dig too deep, if I stay too long
Oh, yeah, you wreck me, baby
Yeah, you break me in two
But you move me, honey
Yes, you do
I'll be the boy in the corduroy pants
You'll be the girl at the high school dance
Run with me, wherever I go
And just play dumb, whatever you know
Oh, yeah, you wreck me, baby
Yeah, you break me in two
But you move me, honey
Yes, you do
You wreck me, baby
Yeah, you break me in two
Oh, but you move me, honey
Ah, yes, you do

I don’t understand why this isn’t played ever on rock radio. All I ever hear is “Runnin’ Down a Dream.”
One of the greatest songs ever written!
Tom petty has his own channel on SiriusXM, if that's an option for ya.
@@sherryherrick6567 it is for me... Thank U ❤
Yeah seriously
If a mainstream rock radio is still alive, it's because of the consumer.
This is how they want us to be. Routine beings without personality.
I'd followed him since I was 16 (1977) and when he died, it astounded me that it was 40 years later. He was just "always there", churning out one good album after another. I really can't remember a time in my life that I didn't have one of his songs running through my head. In a world full of dullards it's hard to lose a true original.
I feel you man. I was born in 82, grew up listening to this and fleetwood mac from my parents. Feel blessed when my friends tell me they listened to bananarama and kylie 😃😃
A true music legend, music is timeless.
Always said this is the one concert I need to fuel my soul.then he left.
Yes
Yes his death wrecked me to
Tom Petty has written himself into rock n roll history as one of the greatest musicians to walk the earth.
Mike wrote this and others.
you all prolly dont care but does someone know a tool to get back into an Instagram account?
I somehow lost my password. I would appreciate any assistance you can offer me.
@Willie Jensen Instablaster :)
@Kingsley Mohammed I really appreciate your reply. I got to the site thru google and I'm in the hacking process atm.
Takes a while so I will get back to you later with my results.
@Kingsley Mohammed it did the trick and I now got access to my account again. I'm so happy!
Thanks so much, you saved my ass!
I'll be the boy in the corduroy pants. You be the girl at the high school dance.
Great lyric. Elegantly simple, yet it puts you right in that scene.
I saw a Tom Petty documentary what really what was what his fellow musicians said about him he was a musicians musician. I think that was the ultimate compliment
Straight ahead, unpretentious, driving rock.
RIP, Tom. Still miss having you around.
Mike and the Dirty Knobs are still rocking! He helps fill that missing piece.
No shit, buddy! RIP indeed.
The beauty of it all is that Tom is with us every time we put needle to vinyl, pop in a cassette or 8-track, or go digital.
He was an American icon, and his legacy will continue for generations.
Tom sure could write them. And play them. And sing them. He's sorely missed.
I'm happy to have been on the same planet as him! I would really like to thank the music and lyrics that changed part of my life.. thanks man!
Rest in peace Tom, you're a true legend who's music will live on forever.
Thank you GOD for letting us have Tom Petty as long as you did, just wish You could have waited a little longer before taking him. RIP TOM PETTY
maybe he wanted him home with him. I miss him also
I think it’s actually harder to write a simple song that doesn’t sound cheesy, than it is to write highfalutin mumbo-jumbo. Petty had a gift.
What if it wasnt him tho.....todays songs lie alot. ........... the scam could be different for the generation.
This song is rocking. He probably wrote it on the toilet. But it makes me highly excitable!
It's called Genius in my simple generation ❤ I
Free Fallin started as a joke, he was trying to annoy his producer who was asking for a hit and then they both realized it was actually a good song, so they added a capo and made history. Petty couldn't write a bad song even when he tried to
Tom had that “gift.” I was lucky enough to watch that process up close on a rare occasion when he wrote a song within minutes of being given a lyrical line from an audience member. It was truly magical…
2024 and I'm 39...still blasting this loud!!! R.I.P tom
Me too! ❤️ It!!
58 and doing the same!
45 😮❤
The last time I listened to Petty was 2007. You were 22, and I was 29. So, 17 years later....It took for me to comment to You, that THEY NEVER LEFT. Tom Petty's Music is Here. Like Ozzy. My Heroes of Rock because they Understand just How easy it is to Lose it ALL. I hope you have a good life, perhaps a great life. Either way, I hope you know that I'm out there in the same world in Different Realms, but truly it all Blends and Meshes together...**I noticed the RC car. Those are Great! Take Care, *Much Love (rock and roll love of course).
58 still...
Is this song just so damn good or what? Really I mean, wow!!! It is one of their best songs.
It is!
Oh yeah.
Pinky Bailey I didn't know of any of TPHB to have anything other than great or best songs. From older original to a lil change w/the times all songs ruled for each and every year, nothing but the best. Godspeed Tom Petty
Absolutely!
This and Honey Bee!
Tom was like a childhood friend. I was 11 when the first Heartbreakers album came out. And decades of great songs (like this one!) just kept coming. I saw them live in Miami in the Nineties, and I'll never forget their rendition of Purple Haze. Pure genius!
I agree When you feel lonely, happy, sad whatever you just turn on some music and listen to your old friends
Wow. I saw them live about 10 times and never heard "Purple Haze." I'm jealous! I remember them doing a kick ass version of "Should I Stay or Should I Go" at the Merriweather-Post Pavilion in about 1987 ,though.
Tom, you are alive in my heart, never left, never will, I love you
Damn right I'm here in 2024 because real music has no expiration date. We've already witnessed the greatest music of all time, there will never be a better time for music that's already come and gone. Long live rock and roll.
I don't think there is a single Tom petty song I don't like
Tom Petty was my hero. He was the Very essence of embracing the Constitutional principle of "Pursuit of happiness"
My God, what an American!
@@josephlocher5958 What about David Crockett?
I agree not single song that I dont adore
Me too lol.
Me also 👌🏻
Great song. R.I.P. Tom your music will last forever.
One of the best rock songs ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Gainesville, Fla,s own Singer Tom Petty! And we could,nt be more Proud!!!! Go Gators!!!!❤❤❤❤😮
RIP Tom Petty. One of my favorite songs. He will be missed by my family
I grew up with Tom Petty’s music and I still am listening to his music in 2021! R I P to one of the greatest rock and roll artists and to an amazing musician and songwriter! I miss you Tom
One of the best gone way to early
Rest In Peace Tom ♥️

I saw him in Baltimore on his last tour. I could tell he wasn't quite his normal self but, of course, I didn't know why. I remember the day that he died a few months later. I was genuinely emotional. He was such a big part of my life from high school to my 50s. I saw him probably ten times. So sad.
This man is my whole heart. ❤ I wish so badly he was still here with us.
Probably my favorite Tom Petty song with the live King's Highway running a close 2nd. So many good ones. So grateful I got to see him in Hartford under the summer sky in 2005.
I take exception with the Man upstairs on this one. We needed Tom Petty more than he did. If I was ever down, all I had to do was listen to Tom's songs, this one in particular, and I was lifted up, my soul was soothed. I love all genres of music but only Tom's music made me feel that way. From the bottom of my heart, thank you Mr Petty for the outstanding music, rest in peace talented, beautiful soul that you are.
Just browsing through comments, saw yours, Edie, if you see this, I agree that Tom knew how to write simple but dynamic, moving, songs. As far as the Man upstairs is concerned, well, just maybe, now 3 of the Travellin' Wilburys are back together.
Every once in awhile on this earth we find souls that are truly "human". They instinctlvely know what others need and find a way to provide. And are so very good at their chosen 'niche' in life. Tom for sure was one of those people. He surrounded himself with others of the same attitude.
As awful as we feel for having lost Tom...I am sadder to think of the rest of the Heartbreakers for their loss, and the Petty family as well.
I completely agree. My sentiments, exactly. He was an angel of Rock and Roll and the spirit of the country
Such a simple line, but i've always loved "I'll be the boy in the corduroy pants, you'll be the girl at the high school dance"
Yep, that line jumped out at me from the first listen onward as well. Many songs have a line like this for me, and it usually is something quite simple but catchy.
Me too,probably my favorite line
God bless you you love it because it's a true song! Tom petty singd about true stories God bless you!
Yea, great line, and it reminds me of the “high school dance” memories...
me too...
when i feel down... i listen to Tom Petty... and i feel good again ... that is what his music means to me... He will be missed soooooooo darn much... love u Tom XXX
Can't ever get enough of this classic, nor of the rest of this musical genius' numerous classic's forever etched in American Rock-n-Roll history ! ! ! How I miss you Tom Petty !
This is making me cry. Goodbye to the biggest legend ever
One of the best Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers songs ever in history of the universe til the end of time.
Garrett Hale
Forever and ever, amen.
This and any one of the almost 700 others he wrote.
The most underrated artist ever.
**Bit of a long post, but I don't care.* My Dad passed on in 2007 when I was 29. It took until April 8th, 2024 to listen again. BURST of EMOTIONs as Clarity. The song was "Saving Grace" which was the last song we listened to Together in 2007. Now I'm jammin' *soberly*. 46 years of Age? Aside from a daily painful back, but I earned Every Scar. Petty, Ozzy, Alice In Chains...I'd say are my 3 biggest Rock Influences. All By 46!!! **I almost died many times, but each time it showed me How to Accept the Ways I Think.
I'm glad you're still here. ODAAT. Keep up the good work! Can definitely relate to back pain.
Take it easy and carry on with living and loving yourself you have purpose wish you the best of luck
Fantastic song from an absolute, absolute legend of a Musician ❤🙏
Tom petty is a heartbreaker! I bought his first album before he was famous . He is still alive through his beautiful music. I love Tom Petty forever !
One of my favourite Petty tracks. Kicked so much ass when it came. RIP brother...
Thanks for the wonderful songs & memories. This is what I believe.......Mr. Tom Petty is rocking on one of God's celestial bands.
The first Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers song I ever heard. My life was changed forever. This band saved my life. Thank you x infinity.
You gotta love Steve Ferrone. Just sitting back there smiling, hammering it down. What a legend.
What a loss tom was one of a kind his tunes will live forever.
Although the genre of music I both grew up with, and performed, was of the 50's & 60's I considered Tom Petty to be a fabulous and gifted musician and vocalist of his era! Another great performer gone way too soon!
Song came on for commercial break of the Padres - Phillies NLCS game and had to come back to it!
Heard it to man in the nlds along with runnin down a dream and I won't back down
As a 40 year guitarist Tom's simplicity was absolutely incredible.
Tom Petty is one of the greatest songwriter and composer ever known..
the moment when you feel happy and sad at the same time is when you listen to this song but also know Petty is gone! RIP
He's not gone until people stop listening to his music and that will never happen
Maria Pratiwi it's so bittersweet
Only until people like you and me are gone because today and future generations don't know what good music is.
I agree wholeheartedly
RIP to a legend. Thanks for the music, Tom Petty!
I heard this tune for the first time in a while and it made me smile. And after it ended, I looked up and said "Thanks Tom." Great music that will last forever even though he's gone.
Great song Rest In Peace and thank you for 40 years of amazing music!
😒
1:45 one of the best Solos of all time. It’s just legendary.
Never gets old...he knew how it all worked 💪
In my opinion this is his best song
Whichever Petty song I'm listening to is my favorite at that time
This one and Kings Highway are my favorites
Thanks Tom for all your great music! I got married for the first time in my life, and I feel like I’ve been wrecked! But it’s getting better…lol
One of my favorites. Thank you for this. Tom's legacy lives on, despite the haters. Bravo sir 🤘❤
So thankful I got to see him at least once. 20 years ago in Duluth MN. Staples Singers opened. I came back to Miami in 1976 from college and I grew up close to 441 with the waves crashing on the beach. Been playing his music for the last 40 years and performing it for the last 20. A poet who could capture the experiences that make us most human and, of course, the voice of the Baby Boomer generation. Like everyone, miss him so much. Huge Mike Campbell fan, perhaps the hookiest guitarist of his generation. Petty comes out on stage to start the show in Duluth, they played the first song everyone is on their feet and applauding, but the applause doesn't really stop, maybe a minute in, they start the next song - the audience stops applauding. This happens two more times 🙂. After the third song (they've been looking at each other on stage kind of like, what's going on). Petty comes to the mic and says "guess we should have come here a long time ago." Of course, the audience exploded in laughter and more applause. Wonder if any of the other members of the band would remember that.
Love love love. Thanks, Tom and the Heartbreakers. RIP
I saw the movie Tom Petty Live in Gatorville on AXS television and I video-recorded this song (near the end of the concert) because there is a guitar solo on an Orange guitar with a cool Alligator painted on it 😂
Will cover this song at our next show in your tribute. RIP Tom. You legacy lives on!

"I'll be the boy in the corduroy pants, you'll be the girl, at the high school dance. Run with me, wherever I go, and just play dumb, whatever you know. You really wreck me honey, yeah you break me in two, but you move me honey, yes you do.:
I love, love, love those lyrics. Miss the hell out of you, Tom.
To the friend and college roommate who shared her copy of Full Moon Fever with me in 1992, you have my eternal gratitude. She introduced me to Tom and AC/DC. I introduced her to The Police and Sam Adams lager.
Nice tribute. Good of you to type this in. Wonder if she's still around?
What a great groove and song ! No logical reason why this was not included on Hits. Really...wrecked me.
whoa yeahhhhh
It wasn't released when the greatest hits came out
@Charlie's Models Figured that may have been the case but did not verify. Thanks! One of his rockers!

Love, love, love Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. I got to see him in 99. Great show! RIP Tom💕🤘🤟🙏🏻😇
Tom Petty saved me from disco. YES!! I am a rock and roll gal.
Cindy Roll Me too, Cindy. THANK GOD for Tom Petty! I live in New Zealand and when I was younger, Bob Dylan toured here and Tom Petty was the support act. I love Dylan, but he was so wasted that he couldn’t play very well, and unfortunately he got booed off stage! Well, Petty came out and saved the night! Little story that I’ll tell my grandkids!
Lmfao that's epic babe!!! Good chit!!!
@@mikewren9719 thats killer! I have always said TP is the greatest singer/songwriter America has ever produced...one my first arguments was against Dylan............. shut that down in about 2 minutes. Glad you got to see Tom from Florida USA, he's a treasure
I was a little girl, 5, when I fell in love with Tom's music! I was BORN to be Tom's BIGGEST FAN! I am 45 today! 40 years of awesome music from Tom

What a great guitarist. He was so influenced by the Byrds. R.I.P. Tom.
He is a king for sure.
Ya betcha. Every time I Listen to I feel a WHOLE LOT BETTER
@@silviojoseperedacortes7029 RIP Gene Clark
When Tom Petty could not finish this song, after 2 years into the making of the album "Wildflowers" in one night he changed just one word which in turn changed the entire song. Instead of the Title of the song being. "You Rock Me Baby" he changed the Title to, "You ROCK Me Baby."
That is what a Great Artist does. They hang on to their best work such long periods of time, until they find the perfection that they need to make the song as they feel it should be, not only for themselves or for their Fabs, but for both to enjoy. 🎶💜🎶
Same with movie scripts as well.
Little pointer I’m gonna take.
I’m a perfectionist.
“There's never going to be someone else," he says, shaking his head. "You've wrecked me. I wouldn't be any good to anybody now-except for you.” ― Emm Cole, The Short Life of Sparrows

Look at jackets he wore on stage.
