    Very cool to see them release new hardware. I was hoping to see HDR10+/Dolby Vision support. I'm also hoping for a new entry level line that's more affordable, fingers crossed at some point.

    • @Techthusiasm

      HDR10+/DV would be a feature of a new Strato player revision, not the Terra. I don't think we will see new Strato model(s) until next year. The Terra is the new for this CEDIA. Still, this is much better than just changing storage amounts. We have a lot of new hardware and tech packed into the Primes.

      Wow..I had no idea DV was not supported. At this price point that seems incredible to me

    Love your channel. I cannot see the justification for this product. Huge price. I went a different route-bought a Zidoo Z1000Pro, Synology 6-bay NAS setup with 6x10Tb HDs in Raid5. Spent the last 1-1/2 yrs. ripping all my DVD, Bluray & 4K’s using MakeMKV (loved your video on that procedure!). When a new movie comes out that I like, either me or my brother-in-law buy it and then I spend an hour or two ripping and cataloguing it, transfer to the NAS and viola! I have a hard copy of the movie forever as well as a digital copy. And I get all the latest sound & video formats. Seems a better and much cheaper solution. All the hardware ran about $3500. CDN.

      Thanks! The DIY route for media serving has its virtues, but so does K. Price differential is a main factor, for sure, but so is time. Even with its price tag, K has a lot of virtues.

      Main advantage I love, is all of the 4K movies offered on the Kaleidescape Movie Store not available on disc…

    Most people will still not have the sufficient bandwidth to maximize the new download speed. Hoping to see some sales on the “old” equipment.

    • @Techthusiasm
      @Techthusiasm  Рік тому

      My current Terra uses up to 800 Mbps of the 1 Gbps service I have right now, and I could get, I think, up to 1.2 Gbps if I wanted from my provider. So I could push my download times down with a Prime. But for sure, 2.5G internet or more is a pretty sparse offering.

  • @joehova2550
    @joehova2550 Рік тому +3

    ...a $5k premium for commodity hardware (2.5 NIC and SSD's) on top of an already bloated MSRP, is absolutely insane regardless of your station in life. It's hard to respect any company that takes this approach. They're practically just calling all their customers fools at this point.

    • @Techthusiasm
      @Techthusiasm  Рік тому

      I don't agree, but I understand that the price doesn't appeal to most. There are a lot of expensive things and toys available in this world. Different folks have different toys they consider "worth" it.

    • @joehova2550
      @joehova2550 Рік тому +1

      @@Techthusiasm I'm with you on the "worth it" part, this just happens to be a bit egregious. I mean, this company has done so little innovating in the last decade that we're excited for a different color case and some cheap (to them) parts swaps. I'm happy it's not the nth time they just fiddled with capacity and patted themselves on the back, but the bar for this company is objectively low. These are incremental upgrades at best that don't warrant a new 2x tier in pricing. Thank you for letting us have candid discussion!

    • @Techthusiasm
      @Techthusiasm  Рік тому

      I love the discussion! I'm pretty hopeful for what a next generation Strato could be, but I don't expect to see it now until 2024 (although hopefully sooner than later). I would say the whole Strato/Terra product line was a big innovation, but I would welcome faster development and more features sooner going forward now.

    Glad I waited on getting a 22tb to expand my storage. Waiting for CEDIA to pass before I order but expanding very very shortly after CEDIA is done.
    As for the SSD models they are very cool, but I wouldn't get much benefit from it. Not with just being in two rooms and by the time we decide what we will watch which is usually done hours before we watch the 4 min download time is nice but not needed at the price increase for myself. Which also brings up teh fact that my download is 1.2 down. I would also need to upgrade all my switches to support that which I plan to do at some point but not right now

    • @Techthusiasm
      @Techthusiasm  Рік тому

      Most folks in a residential setup would find value in more storage than the extra performance of the SSD models, I would think. Unless money is really no option, then geez, I'd take a 3x the 31TB SSDs please to fit my whole library with a little room to grow! :)

    Nothing here that interests me as I don't have a mansion with 10 or 20 movie watching screens and speed really isn't so important for my application. BUT, as you mention, I'm still waiting to see what the new Strato will do. They really need to offer a Strato S type of device again with an integrated storage drive (small SSD this time?), to allow downloading rentals without needing a Terra server. Also regarding content, would like them to expand to concert events/operas/etc. as they really don't have any in their store in most genres.

    • @Techthusiasm
      @Techthusiasm  Рік тому

      I'm excited for 2024 for sure. There has been quite a lot of concert content added to the store, particularly this year. There's even a dedicated section for it on the web now too.

    • @gjhunter9326
      @gjhunter9326 Рік тому

      @@Techthusiasm Glad to hear that. When I went to my dealer last year to seriously consider the system, there were no operas and very few classical and jazz concerts at all to even demo. Sounds like they’ve listened to their customers, which his great.
      Regarding a new Strato S type device, I’d be satisfied if I could rent or purchase content, like other streaming services where you just download what you want to watch each time without the need for a large server for “permanent” storage if you didn’t want it. It’s good to have the option, but only having to buy a Stratos would be a great option.

    I would think you would also need to pay your ISP a lot more money to bump up to the 2.5GB speed. But if your buying a Kaleidescape, I'm sure money is no bother anyway.

    kinda dissappointed that no dolby vison yet they go out way to do ssd upgrade but that put lot of people in better mood knowing SSD failure rates like 10x lower than HDDs.

    • @Techthusiasm
      @Techthusiasm  Рік тому

      DV would be a feature of a new/future Strato player, not the Terra server storage. We will surely get a new Strato at some point, just a matter of when and what all features it may carry.

  • @triplerinse
    @triplerinse Рік тому

    Yeah, perfect timing to cut storage in half charge less for a 2 tb ssd model. Charge 2k and get them in more houses. You cut production cost by throwing in a 2tb ssd and people would be fine with 4min download. You could even start making usb c expansion kits

    • @Techthusiasm
      @Techthusiasm  Рік тому

      We didn't get a new entry point or a lower price point this time, but we will see how the platform evolves in the future. There will certainly be more K hardware to come in the long run.

  • @stevewright1539
    @stevewright1539 Рік тому

    The needle towards acceptance has moved a bit for me. Cost has to be below 10k and the 8TB server would hit that mark. Still my BIGGEST issue is not seeing your entire library on the Home Screen. I’d even pay a yearly (maybe $100) for this ability. If projectors are in the same range I can see a similarly priced media delivery system. Wing justified given how well the software and hardware performs.

    • @Techthusiasm
      @Techthusiasm  Рік тому

      I think with such fast downloads, we are getting closer the justification of seeing our full libraries. I have certainly given the feedback. We will see what 2024 holds with the Strato line and kOS upgrades. I'm hopeful.

    • @stevewright1539
      @stevewright1539 Рік тому

      @@Techthusiasm my concern is they are holding back functionality as a way to incentivize the purchase of more expensive, higher capacity drives. It seems like an easy enough update but why offer that when they push customers into the next hardware tier. Still, I think a reasonable yearly fee would be easier to digest to get the features we want.

    Very interesting news! Wish I would have now waited a few months - just bought the 22TB Compact Terra 8 weeks ago. But no complaints anyhow with current offering. Guess something to consider once/if I max out space on the 2 22TB units to add one of the SSD versions. Will be at CEDIA next week so curious to see units up close.

      I would say, yes, expect a bit of a rush of used K hardware to hit eBay, AVS, and the owner's forum coming up. It's a great chance for folks to get into the platform buying the used gear that is likely still under warranty for some years. I started my K journey with a used Strato player.

    Get more storage for 10x less with a nas server and plex
    Dolby vision support. No need to rebuy all your movies. Not locked into 1 company. If they fold you lose all that $
    No thanks

    • @Techthusiasm
      @Techthusiasm  Рік тому

      K is expensive in dollars. DIY ripping servers are expensive in the time spent to manage them. Plus, you can only rip what you can buy as the studios choose to release (or not release) content on physical media. I find the virtues of the platform worth the money as many do, but it is fair and understandable that most don't.

  • @duranarts
    @duranarts Рік тому +5

    Just crazy how anyone would justify this equipment. It really feels like I've gone back in time and landed on an alternate universe. A universe where only the privileged (or rich..) are able to have access to movies. I'm sorry but this kind of shit is just silly. Call me crazy but aren't streaming services providing 4k Atmos content already? For 15 bucks a month at that. I guess it just takes a couple of suckers to buy into this expensive junk for them to profit.

    • @myhomeaudio8751
      @myhomeaudio8751 Рік тому

      Correct

    • @OWOLABIYANU
      @OWOLABIYANU Рік тому

      while i agree that this is outrageously expensive, the content on there is not in anywhere in the same realm as streaming. it's right in line with and sometimes better than 4k bluray discs and if you can't tell the difference in your setup then this whole thing is not for you.

    • @Techthusiasm
      @Techthusiasm  Рік тому

      But you don't need a K to watch movies. You can still (mostly) buy discs. You can buy and stream on iTunes. You can subscribe to a service and stream there, as you say. K existing doesn't take movies away from anyone or make them only available to the rich. It provides a luxury way to enjoy content in a space that makes sense for it. For that luxury price tag, you get quite a lot of features and the absolute best quality you can get in the home.

    • @MetalSamantha
      @MetalSamantha Рік тому

      I do get both sides of this. For me, my C2, Big HomePods, AirPods Max, Apple TV plus TVOS and iTunes suffices (and i even get why even that is extravagant and pointless to some) but then, I am considering VisionPlus, though it puts me off that the sound system for it is just ordinary AirPods

    • @Techthusiasm
      @Techthusiasm  Рік тому

      If you're happy with your system, then enjoy it and don't worry about more expensive FOMO. Streaming and iTunes is really fantastic. If K went away, that's what I would be using. It's incredibly efficient, convenient, cost effective, and the quality is better than many folks give it credit for. I'm excited for the Vision Pro. I'd very much like to pick one up and make content about it from a home theater/media perspective. I just hope they do it right.
