ST. EZEKIEL MORENO
Patron Saint of Cancer Patients
Ezekiel Moreno y Diaz was born in Alfaro, La Rioja, Spain, on April 9, 1848. He professed his vows in the Order of Agustinian Recollects in Monteagudo (Navarra) in 1865. He was ordained as priest in Manila in 1871 and worked for 15 years as a missionary in the Philippines. As Prior of Monteagudo in 1885, he left for Colombia in 1888 where he restored the Agustinian Recollect Order and reactivated the old missions. Named Apostolic Vicar of Casarane (1893), and Bishop of Pasto (1896), he was a model pastor for his fidelity to the Church and for his apostolic zeal. He fell ill and in 1906 returned to Spain where he died of cancer of the palate in August 19 of the same year at the convent of Monteagudo. Innumerable cures, especially of cancer, are attributed to his intercession. He was beatified on November 1, 1975 and canonized on October 11, 1992 in Santo Domingo on the occasion of the 5th centenary of the Christianization of America.
CURATE OF LAS PIÑAS
In June 1876, Fr. Ezekiel went to Las Piñas, where his pastoral zeal would be put to the test through four major calamities. These were the droughts of 1876 and 1878; the smallpox outbreak that took the lives of over a hundred children, and the great fire of 1879 that razed the Poblacion to the ground, It was during the fourth calamity where he was believed to have performed a miracle. According to witness who testified in a diocesan tribunal during beatification, the fire was extinguished at the very spot where Fr. Ezekiel was standing.
