- Broadcasting legend Alan Freeman hosting Radio 2's Saturday afternoon "Pick of the Pops" on July 4th 1998, looking back on the chart of 1976.
You Tube's auto-copyright system prevents me from uploading the entire programme, but I hope these edited highlights give you enough of a flavour of the original show.
"Fluff" was coming towards the end of his time on-air - you can hear him almost losing the plot in a couple of places - but he still sounds amazing and clearly having a lot of fun with his Producer.
I had the privilege of seeing him in the summer of 2006 shortly before he died, while filming at the Entertainment Artistes' Benevolent Fund care home in Twickenham. He gave us a smile and still had a twinkle in the eye!
Thanks for watching - and listening! :)
Fluff was arguably one of the best radio DJ's ever. His clever use of snippets of classical music in his links shows a depth of musical knowledge few others could equal, the amount of hard work needed to put his shows together, then presenting them with a passion and contagious enthusiasm must put him among a very exclusive elite of presenters.
Totally agree - much missed :)
The only thing wrong with that statement is the word 'arguably'. Anyone who argues with that is just wrong!
This is when actual effort was put into a radio show. Miss you fluff...
Saturday rock show Classic stuff. Fluff the Legend!✌️
I was born in September 1976, but the chart of the week ending 10 July 1976 is an absolutely awesome one. (The UK Summer of that year was also a hot one).
You are SO right Chris! Great music - many of the hits still getting regular airplay today - and, yes, a long hot summer in the UK that will never be forgotten.
Chris Boyle ...I remember it well. I was 16
best dj ever
Candi Statton reached No.2 in the UK chart with "Young Hearts Run Free" and was not heading towards the UK No.1 spot like Fluff points out.
sorry dont like any review chart shows done after ,I like the ones done at the time I have got all of the 1976 top 20 on tape
Do you have the 1st half of that show available?
Chris Boyle Really sorry Chris - I only taped the 1976 half of the show!
