One thing I love about learning theory is how it does often connect back to what you already know. This was my experience when I entered higher ed as well. I just kind of went with it but as I did my own professional development I could start putting a name to things I was already doing while adding a few extra skills.
Nice!! Yes, it is great to be able to connect what you’re learning to your past experience (stimulate prior recall! Haha). Getting comfortable talking about your experience and skills in ID terms will help you a ton with the transition.
Gagne's Nine Events of Instruction emphasize capturing audience attention, clearly stating objectives in a conversational manner, connecting new knowledge to existing knowledge, presenting content using varied media, providing guidance through scaffolding and mnemonic devices, creating practice opportunities for low-risk skill application, offering immediate feedback on practice, assessing performance to gather data for improvement, and enhancing transfer and retention by mirroring real-world contexts and providing job aids.
"Provide content" is woefully under-explained in this model. Not the UA-camr's fault, though. I would say use this model but consider its potential weaknesses and adjust for them.
Thank you so much! I am so happy I have found you as a resource. During this video, I was able to see a direct connection with a lot of what I do as an educator. Thank you.
Thank you so much . Its so important lesson as a teacher educater. Your sounds are very clear . Great explanation. My english knowledge is poor . But I can understand so clear . Thanks again. 🙏
Information Technology and Big Data culture borrowed from learning theory to sell BIG computer solutions and AI, so there is a HUGE cultural gap between these two fields, teaching and Big Data IT, with many of the same words are used and misued causing confusion. People who have worked in heavy big data environments may simply turn off any learning theory graphics simply because they remind them of horseshit marketing graphics for selling big data. I encountered some of these learning theories with my own online research into education while doing graphic design for a technology company, and AT THE SAME TIME was seeing SIMILAR LOOKING "learning theory graphics" coming from the Big Data companies with phrases like "data drives action and turns processing into wisdom", and realized that these are COMPLETELY DIFFERENT WITH A HUGE CULTURAL GAP BETWEEN THEM. You may think that the phrase "using stories" is about a way to explain something, BUT to someone else the same phrase obviously means propaganda and they cna't imagine stories being used in any other way that as a way to trick people. If you don't know about these being cultural different you may make the mistake of arguing with a big data manager about his choice of words. It's simply a matter of two cultures with some words meaning different things and sometimes opposites. There is no similiarty between learning theory proposed by teachers and "informatton processing" theory by big data. People who have seen IT related "learning theory" will read your graphics wrong because they will see the graphic itself as having a meaning that goes beyond the parts, as something that supports this or that type of computer program to solve problems. Someone with experience in cross cultural communication may have more to say on that.
Thanks for sharing! Definitely goes to show the value in learner analysis and seeing what attitudes / experiences people associate with different art styles :D. We appreciate you!
Thanks for this quick summary of Gagne's Nine Events! This video provides enough information for awareness, but also just enough of a teaser to find out more information on it.
You make me wanting to be an Instructional Designer too! Inspired! Do you do short online courses? You explain it very well for a novice teacher as me.
Yes! You could check out the Storyline Project Lab or even the bootcamp. All the courses my team and I offer are self-paced so you can chunk them out to manage your time. Good luck! www.devlinpeck.com/storyline-project-lab
Your video is so helpful! i'm actually writing an article and needed further understanding on this.. it is crystal clear.. thank you so much.. so helpful.
Dear Devlin, You are doing an amazing job, thank you for sharing the knowledge. I am new to instructional designing. Can you recommend a particular book for more information on Gagne's Nine events of Instruction
Hi Raven. Thank you for the positive feedback, and welcome to the world of instructional design. I do not have any specific book recommendations on Gagne's 9 Events except for the book that gave rise to it all: Conditions of Learning by Robert Gagne.
Thank you so much. I could learn a lot about topics related to ID because of your useful content. You are a real Desi because you simplify simplify and simplify things.
Thank You Devlin for the valuable learning resources.. I have one doubt about whether we need to write learning objectives or not when we design the training module. Or learning objectives are for us that guide how to design the training course accordingly? Please guide me.
Hey Devlin, I really love the clarity with which you present your content. I am an online educator/trainer learning the skills of instructional design. These principles are really helping me analyze how I designed training content in the past and what I could have done to make them better.
I don’t think that’s a common approach. Pre-assessments usually help you get data so that you can evaluate the learning effectiveness of your program. Good question though 😃
Thank you for creating such clear and crisp content. Loved your work! I am going through all of your videos, they are easy to understand and I was thinking if you can also share your work/ project where you applied all these ID tools and theories. So that we can also see the practical application.
Thanks Prateek! I’m glad that you’re enjoying the content. And I actually did a video about LMS basics...try searching “Learning management system Devlin peck”
This is exciting. I implement this every time I do a new unit to my students. Now, as I get ready to retire and jump into the world of ID, I know exactly how I will apply these events. I even know which project to include for my portfolio, because I also plan to create a course on fasting and low carb eating for beginners. Why not blend the two right off the bat? I notice you have videos on course creation Devlin, and I'm getting all kinds of Aha moments as I watch this one. Pumped to retire from the slog of teaching and find freelance work in ID that keeps my brain firing and my creative juices flowing.
Sir I am happy with your presentation . Yes I have enjoyed while I was preparing using Gagne nine instructional events for my demonstration class for student teachers and for high schools students for my experiments in actual classrooms.
Hi Paige, I don't see why not! Microlearning has many definitions though, so I may not be the best person to ask about this. Many people I respect in the field view this as a buzzwordy term that doesn't have one clearly agreed upon definition.
@@DevlinPeckYT Yes, I am discovering that definition gets fuzzier all the time. I am working on a project that delivers asynchronous just-in-time learning along with competency-based modules on "soft" skills in the context of the early childhood education profession. We have learning paths for different ECE environments. As a fairly new and overly educated designer, I run into the problem of trying to cram the nine into a tiny module. My strategy is now to stretch the nine out in the learning path. However, we have modules that will be independent of the learning paths. Are there innovative ways to create or examples out there of all nine in a microlearning module?
@@paigeholmes1506 Hi Paige, I am not sure! It does seem like it would be tough to fit all of this into a short module. I imagine the assessment could come at the end...maybe grabbing attention and providing practice opportunities would be best for a micro learning campaign like this.
