They should have been a check to leave 0.005 inches to 0.031 inches clearance between the nipple hex and socket. As a DME I provide a set for feeler gauges and if the applicant follows all the directions as written in AC 43.13-1B FIGURE 9-8. Hose assembly instructions (can be used for low-pressure hydraulic fluid, and oil line applications). The failure is caused by not following all of the steps and missing the clearance check. This is why there are checklists in aviation.

Hey. So say you need to fabricate a flexible hose with the connections 6-inches apart. I know it states that the hose must be fabricated 5 to 8 percent longer to allow for pressure movement. One of the possible practical projects is to fabricate a replacement line, so I was wondering how you would size in this example a 6-inch hose 5-8 percent longer?
Okay so you have 6 inch hose you want it to be 5% larger but you want to turn 5% into a decimal so divide by 100. Gives you .05, you will then do 6 × .05 giving you .3. But you can't measure .3 so it has to be a fraction. So .3 × the divisor say for this example 32nds. So .3 times 32 equals 9.6 round it to 10 which means your 5% hose extension becomes 6 and 10/32nds of an inch
