Sam, fantastic video showing all that’s best about the Irish Football League, you’re welcome anytime as you promote impartially this sport of football. Hopefully this will kickstart Glentoran into a sustained charge up the division with European qualification the minimum aim and league titles the ultimate aspiration.
I have watched many of your videos, great quality and I love the way you let local supporters express their love for their club and Irish League Football. Great to see so many young people at the games. Well done once again! 👏
Thanks for putting the Oval on the bucket list. I went to Cliftonville Crusaders last time I was in Belfast. Had a blast. We don’t get Derbies like this in the US!
As a child my father took me to the Oval to see the Glens play Benfica in the European Cup (1967). It ended 1-1. I managed to get George Best's autograph as he was sitting only a few feet from me.
Nothing like it was in the 60s & 70s The Oval was packed fantastic atmosphere, in those days and Glentoran had fantastic teams, the year Utd won the European Cup, we went out to Benfica on away goals, 1-1 at the oval Eusebio scored a penalty I think there were 40,000 at it. We drew 0-0 in Lisbon, Tommy Jackson who ended up at Everton marked Eusebio out of the game. Benfica lost 4-1 to Utd in the Final.
I was at the game sam i was on the hill where you were for the first half gutted I never spotted you it would of been great to have a chat! And finally meet you I've been following you're channel for quite some time now glad you enjoyed the game even know it wasn't a blockbuster but pretty impressive how glentoran held off linfield whilst down to 10 men 🐓❤️💚🖤
Wow! Love a good derby! What a ground. That grass bank reminds me of Wigan’s old Springfield park. In fact the ground is very similar. Rochdale vs Oldham Athletic today on the big derby front. Wonderful video much appreciated
Loved this! I was away this weekend or usually would have been the random Aussie on the Sydneham end! I'm a historian living in East Belfast. If you're looking to do Belfast Celtic video I can link you in with some contacts, I'm also a local for Belfast's other other big derby (Duns v Welders), and I also have a connection with the former club of Bobby Sands (great amatuer team)
Thanks for this, I love your content. The top trending programme currently on the BBC iPlayer is this game so all the media coverage that you and other groundhoppers do is really bringing attention to our league. I was at the game and love our league with a passion. Give me the NIFL over the EPL any day, I'd rather support my local side than pay the exorbitant wages of those in the EPL. Boxing Day's Bel Classico is at the Oval this year with a restricted crowd of 6500, that's the big one everyone goes to. Both allocations will sell out in a day. I hope you enjoy your short stay in NI. "Le Jeu Avant Tout" (Glentoran's motto.)
Funny, thought I’d passed you at half time last night as I walked up the hill, did a double take. Wish I’d said hello! Great vid, shame as I thought that was a smaller crowd than normal, lots tucked at home watching on iPlayer no doubt!
Linfield's historic rivals were belfast celtic, a team that were compelled to withdraw from the irish league in 1949 after linfield fans rioted and assaulted belfast celtic players.
The first video that I watched of yours was the time you had the tour of the oval. It was fantastic and I think I've watched ever video since. I wish I was back home in Belfast to have met you
I was at many Big Two derbies in the 90s. One game at The Oval I remember we were in one side of the Shed and the Glens fans on the other side with a fence in between. There were lads climbing up into the rafters to meet each other for a scrap. I just remember thinking that someone was going to fall and get themselves skewered on the fence.
I went to see Glentoran play PSG in one of the European Cups in 1983 when I was stationed in Ulster with the Military. It was against camp rules to watch local football games but we still went. I remember that the Glens lost and on the final whistle, a Glens fan ran onto the pitch and punched a PSG player. I also remember how good the atmosphere was and how the fans frequently sang the British National Anthem. Afterwards we had to get a taxi back to camp and I admit to be a little nervous being an off duty British Military in the height of “The Troubles” trying to call a taxi from a local phone box. Love Northern Ireland and all the people there heart❤
Glen's manager declan devine giving it loads at the end of the game, biggest spoofer in football..managed Bohs for season+ ..terrible manager, but loves giving it loads after a rare win..bluffed.. up the Bohs❤🖤
22:50 we had Dan Gyollai at Maidenhead United for a couple of seasons. Unfortunately he did his ACL. After recuperating he moved to Glentoran. Those saves he makes are as good as goals in tight games. He was definitely one of the best 'keepers in the National League.
Sam if you ever need a lift anywhere in Northern Ireland for a match feel free to give me a message dude. Seen you rented a car for the Loughgall match. Must be spending a small fortune on ferries and flights making this great content over in NI 👍
There wasn’t a great crowd at this game. A number of reasons, freezing, coming up to Christmas, Friday night and Glentoran have been very inconsistent. When I was younger this game attracted over 20,000. Health and safety have also restricted the Oval crowds. I was in the Ground when over 40,000 attended v Benfica/ Rangers. 27,000 v Juventus, The worse thing to happen was someone stood on your toes. When Glentoran are going well they have one of the biggest supports in Ireland, if not the biggest. Glentoran have always been attractive to neutrals because in Northern Ireland’s divided society they have steadfastly remained non sectarian throughout their history. That has not been the case with others. When the Oval is eventually rebuilt, there will be full capacity crowds at this game.
English man over in Belfast on a business trip staying at the Europa hotel. Asked the barman is there any games on today.(Barman) Yes there is Linfield v Glentoran at Windsor Park.(English man) and what' time is kickoff.(Barman) What ever time you want it to be.😅
It is the most nostalgic, but, as a Glentoran fan to my core, it's still a dump. I sincerely hope that when they finally find the money to do the place up, they will retain the parts of the ground that make it such an iconic place. I spent my youth there, but it's still the same, 50 years on. Every time I make it across the Irish Sea to make a pilgrimage, I worship the place, but I'm not stupid, it's become an embarrassment as a ground for any visiting fans in the 2020's. The NI Assembly have some blame in this. We were promised funding many moons ago, but our local politicians scuppered that, and we're still waiting.
Celtic have 7000 season ticket holders from Northern Ireland/Ireland,Rangers have 7000 season ticket holders from Northern Ireland! (match ticket allocation rotation) Great to see them supporting there local clubs as well!
Or they could just stay and grow their own game? Still incredible to think so many folk in Ireland/ Northern Ireland support two arse cheeks from Glasgow.
Hi Sam I realise you run a football channel but next time you're in Ireland you should check out a gaelic football or hurling match (particularly hurling it's unreal). Its a huge part of the culture here apart from the unionist areas
Its not the northern irish league its called the Irish league, which is very confusing which is probably why its not thete because they might thinl League Of Ireland and irish league are interchangeable but they are not they are separate leagues.
Did the league finish last night? The way the glens celebrated you would have thought they actually won something!!😂 to be fair this is the highlight of their season
Where does this rank in terms of UK derbies?
Cliftonville v linfield is the best derby in the league, but Celtic rangers is maddness

Glens lost on away goals, Benfica, Eusabio et al made it to the final, losing 4-1 to Wee Geordie's Manchester United!!
I was there as well.

Its a pity the League won't turn professional and get young players from England, Scotland and mainland Europe instead of rotting in the reserves!
Just remember that Glentoran where the first team in the British Isles to win a cup in Europe.

Good one to tick off Sam, you must have some knowledge of players in Scotland. Do clubs ever approach you for scouting?
For the biggest derby in the country it was a poor attendance the ground only holds 6000 and it was half empty
It looks empty because of the H&S limits, which are because the ground is in massive need of refurbishment.
The crowd numbers are because of Health and safety concerns in the ground. In past times we had crowds of 20k plus, but not allowed these days.
Can't believe you didn't call them out for having played some team called Patrick Thistle on their honours board Sam
