I agree, I’m learning French in Rosetta and its frustrating that they don’t explain anything. This is a good app BUT you can’t use it alone you have to add in other things or you’ll be lost.
I’m learning French as well and I hate the fact that you have to figure the grammar out on your own!!
Does anyone have a French grammar book recommendation?

I bought Rosetta Stone to learn Japanese but holy crap this is for people that already speak the language. the app is already testing me on repeating long sentences on day 1

You reminded me of the famous scene of Terminator, in the original version in english says "hasta la vista baby " but in the spanish version says "sayonora baby" :)
In fact I listen often people learning spanish saying "hasta la vista" when this expresion I think is not use very often to say good bye, and sounds a bit unnatural. And when used "hasta la vista " usually have a meaning of " I hope I don't see you again !". Better to say" adiós, hasta luego, chao,nos vemos." At least in spanish from Spain.
Spanish from Spain says "Sayonara baby" but latin version says "Hasta la vista baby"

Ok not that I'm a perfect review guy here but to cover some things here.
1st What the video covers although unexpected is correct but also not correct.
True grammar is a problem and isn't often fully correct that I'm just starting to realize but watching small videos along with this allowed me to realize this quickly and have it stick because I used Rosetta Stone.
As someone who has used the earlier versions of Rosetta Stone I think it is good for beginners for this reason.
Immersion - naturally if you're new looking up a definition for a new language it isn't going to work if the english translation is going to most likely fail anyway %50 of the time and be wrong and even if right isn't going to stick with you are going to forget it right away.
So throwing everything at you all at once if you go along with it forces you to guess which in memory makes the language stick to you way more essentially you're teaching your subconscious Japanese which is highly beneficial if you're new. This also forces you're pronouncing of words to be correct even if you don't fully understand the word guessing and observing makes your learning of it in general stick.
I bought mine on discs from eBay for $20. I'm using the Italian course as a beginner. Since, I already know French, it's not difficult. I like it. It was well worth what I paid for it. But, I don't think it would be worth the crazy prices that it would have cost if I'd bought it back when it was new. Thank you for posting this review! 😊 🌷

After studying the reviews I am going to purchase Wanikani for the monthly subscription. Apparently, it is well received as a tool for learning kanji. Maybe you can look into it for yourself. I also have a tutor and we use the "Genki" text in our lessons. The grammar explanations are very good with minimal to no further explanation needed from my tutor. If you are going to Japan soon, use the "Japanese for Busy People" text. It uses a lot of romanji to get you speaking faster.
There was one point where I think it was trying to teach me to say something along the lines of "The man is holding a hat" and "The man is wearing a hat". Though I couldn't be sure because the pictures aren't enough to tell me exactly what those sentences are conveying and I was given no aid in differentiating the two sentences (AND I WAS ABLE TO READ THE HIRIGANA THE SENTENCES WERE WRITTEN IN). It truly is like someone said, for people who already know Japanese. If they would just break down sentences even if not in English, I feel like it would have been easier to understand.
Using Rosetta as a complete beginner in Japanese and i'm getting along quite well.
The biggest problem i have is what you described about getting no "extra information" about some stuff.
For example when it comes to numbers: They just add the endings behind the numbers (ko, sai, hon/pon etc.) without giving you any information on which to use for what item. (same goes for desu/imasu/arimsu or wa/ga etc.)
So what i do is, i right down every new word that comes up and if im not sure what it means i look it up on the web (which, sadly happens rather often since like you explained, too much information at once).
All in all, my opinion as a complete beginner is that it is okay-ish to start learning a language (japanese in my case) but you NEED to do a LOT of extra learning/googling on the side, otherwise you will fall behind and get overwhelmed.
Yes, I assume anyone learning Japanese from scratch with Rosetta would do that. It's impossible to guess all the grammar with just picture. The concept is interesting though.

@Kevein Abroad Good review also, agreed, I've been using Rosetta for some time now, that being in mind I ended up taking advantage of a lifetime subscription. It's got its place, no doubt there.
Like: The variety and delivery of different lessons for Spanish make it my daily driver.
Room for improvement maybe: Overall this experience is not the same across all languages, here the delivery method just does not work, and starting Arabic in this case'. Maybe it just because it's a very different language but starting with other resources I'd, for myself established Arabic was easier to get started elsewhere and not used Rosetta other than for Spanish.
@@lebeardotnet4372 yeah I can totally see that. I feel like if you're learning a language that uses the same script as your native language, then Rosetta Stone should be more efficient

I used Rosetta stone for several weeks and I can vouch that these points are all true. I don't love or hate it and I completely agree with all that you mentioned. It's good and could improve more. Thanks for this video, Kevin. Love the intro, btw! Haha.

I absolutely love it. Simply for the fact, that you don't need effort, to learn a new language. I needed it for school, Spanish to be exact. I just used it for the first few levels and it felt as if I am not learning anything. But then I realized, that I acquired a lot. It's not enough by itself. But what Rosetta Stone gives you, is that you arrive in a language deep enough, that all you need to do after, is to watch movies in order to get much better.
However, I am native German speaker and I suspect, that it works better for related languages, like French, Italian and Spanish. Never tried an exotic language.

Maybe Rosetta Stone will pay attention to everyone expressing their rightful opinions on how they legit don't start you off like an actual beginner. Instead they start you off as though you already are able to speak long sentences. I like the objective concept of it all. But they really should have a course before they through you into each main section lesson they provide. To really go over what means what. Even if it was a quick five minute lesson about what girl/boy means, man, woman, children, etc. I tested it out because I am teaching people in my server and I'm looking for more resources for them when I am not available. And sadly, I already know, rosetta stone wouldn't be good to start them on. It right off the back makes you speak difficult sentences. It isn't for beginners. But people who already know common vocab, kata/gana, and general sentencing.
I do feel like I do pick up some things from Rosetta Stone but just to test it out I went into Spanish which is something I can speak a little bit. I found the lessons sort of confusing even though I understood all of the content
I would say I am beginner intermediate. I use Spanish everyday. I know enough that I can follow along with conversations and usually understand key ideas being shared as well as watch tvi long as the content is not too complex. I can also read newspapers/ watch the news just fine in Spanish. I would not be able to listen to a school lecture or attend a church service and completely understand

04:23 You are totally wrong. Sayonara is not for when someone dies and u say your final words. It is indeed saying bye in Japanese.
You don't say "sayounara" nearly as often as you would say "see ya" or "bye" in English was my point :).
