Native Solitary Bee on Foreign Flower

  • The Sunflower Bee (Svastra obliqua), also known as the Oblique Longhorn, is a species of long-horned bee native to Central America and North America. I found this group visiting Common Chicory (Cichorium intybus), native to Europe, near a pond south of our house in West Sacramento, CA, USA on 5 July 2024.
    Since these bees tend to forage quickly, I slowed some of these segments to 10% speed, others to 50% speed, and froze one segment where two Sunflower Bees face off each other.
    You can hear a Song Sparrow (Melospiza melodia) singing from the nearby pond in the final segments of this video.
