who knew the secret to making a video game adaptation that is actually watchable was just... sticking to the video game the movie was adapted from in the first place?
Fun fact: the Bowser Piano Scene supposedly wasnt in the original script, it wasnt after Jack Black composed the song just for the fun of it and showed it to the higher ups at Illumination that they saw it slapped and put it in the movie.
my biggest complaint with the movie is the fact that they had an original song ready for the scene where mario and co. are being brought to cranky kong and they're driving through the village, only to be replaced with take on me. shame because there were a ton of neat little donkey kong references :(
I just dont understand why when they showed peach it looked like she was a girl on a mission yet as soon as she met mario she forgot about her mission and spent like 3 days training him then she remembered her mission.
I had no expectations going into this movie outside of “it’s an illumination movie” and I forgot it was an illumination movie 10 minutes into it, such a great movie outside of the pacing
i just saw it literally 3 hours ago and it was such a fun movie- it felt more fan service-y compared to the sonic movies but I still had a great time all the voice actors (even pratt) did an AMAZING job
I saw this movie with some of my friends yesterday and it was so much fun. I wish Luigi was there more, but ,overall, I think it was a pretty good film (also the Bowser singing scene was amazing.)
Look as a movie it’s a very solid 6/10 but as a Mario movie it’s amazing. I think it’s a solid 7 or 8 outta 10 but that’s because it was just pure bliss seeing Mario fully realized in a cinematic landscape. Also thank you for touching on how great Anya Taylor Joys Peach was because she knew when to be serious and goofy. Also that final fight where Mario was punched and scratched and bruised even gave me a shock
Fun fact though, in the Super Mario Brothers Super Show Cartoon (1989), Mario and Luigi did get to the Mushroom kingdom in nearly the same way as the movie shows. The two brothers were working on a drain when they were kinda just sucked in and spat out a huge green tube in Mushroom land where they met Toad, Princess Toadstool (the equivalent to Princess Peach), and the main bad guy, King Koopa (the Bowser equivalent)
I'll probably still watch this movie but as soon as I heard that the film suffers from bad pacing and after watching the DnD movie with its honestly perfect pacing, I'm conflicted lol But as long as it's a fun movie, I'll at least enjoy that. Great vid Kei!
I really had a BLAST man. Mario was apart of my childhood and made me just tear a little bit. I felt the love in the theater and it was just all good vibes.
Haven’t seen the movie yet but everyone seems to like Jake black in movie. But is Peach is just gonna be Daisy then they could have just added Daisy in the movie?
I'm in the same boat. I generally enjoyed the movie but it's critical score is not wrong. It's very bare bones in terms of plot and if you don;t turn your brain off there's a lot to question. If this was not a Mario movie I don't think I'd have enjoyed it as much tbh
I only watched it in a step to recovery over the grief the death of my brother who loved Mario. Outside of that the movie is okay. I actually don't remember it but that's probably the grief
My only real problem with this movie is how they peach has the “strong female character” syndrome that’s so common nowadays where they make her ultimately capable with no weaknesses whatsoever. Companies are so piss-scared to make a female character who is even remotely weak, so I can’t say I was surprised when they turned the damsel-in-distress into a mentor character for Mario, and then have Luigi fill her original role. It’s not as bad as other movies where this happens, but I wish that they gave peach more of a presence in this movie other than just “the mentor” because it’s shown that the main conflict can easily be resolved without Mario at all. Maybe if peach was put in a position where she needed Mario to any degree, *like in the games,* then it would be a little more interesting.
I'm so old literally my first video game was Mario 1 on the NES. I've been a fan for 30 years and I don't care that this was only for the fans 😂 I agree tho extended cut please Nintendo.
watched the movie in 3d 4dx and it was the most fun experience i’ve ever had! (i was not ready for all that moving lol) i didn’t have high expectations for the movie but i was pleasantly surprised! i would love to see them make more movies. (preferably one about luigi’s mansion) the movie isn’t a masterpiece but it’s definitely a movie that mario fans can enjoy. as a fan of boo, seeing king boo at the wedding made me really happy 🫶
But the thing is, peach’s personality is also has that strong feminist kind of vibe. Her character puts off this danny pretty princess that could fuck you up, so I don’t really understand why they didn’t just go with that, but I do kinda understand having to force the badass aspect of her personality.
I can’t remember a single line Mario said in this movie but I can remember everyone else’s. That should say something. The movie is great EXCEPT for him.
I’ve answered this question a lot lol. I found it on some random drop shipping store. I haven’t been able to track it down again. The store I originally bought it from (alienated) still exists it just doesn’t have it any more :(
In all seriousness... probably not? Despicable Me had much less problems with its writing and story so it gives it a slight edge over the Mario Bros. move. That being said the Mario Bros. movie is much more fun.
@hikeilokei darn. Guess Illumination still hasn't topped their first movie. I thought if anything would do it it'd be this. Oh well at least there's still Sony and DreamWorks or something.
My favorite part was when Charlie Day said "Hello, Mario. Hello I'm Luigi and I'm here today to tell you all about puberty and its many effects. Puberty is a radical process whereby your body becomes an adult body, entirely capable of reproduction."
I understand the criticism of the pacing, but I actually enjoyed it 😅I don't really want deep lore and intense character backstories. I came for Mario. I got Mario. I am happy. I also was iffy about them changing Peach's personality, but she's a badass and it works pretty well, I think. Also, where are you going to the movies where it costs $15??! I got my ticket for less than $5 😳
Ok so now that I’ve watched the Mario Movie, I have some criticism: (spoiler warning) So first of all, a huge point point of almost every Mario game (setting aside Mario Galaxy) is the idea that you have to defeat the Koopalings fist before you can get to the big bad Bowser. However, not a single Koopaling was featured, but instead we only get one villain. On this point, I like how they included King Bobomb and King Boo at the wedding, and I appreciate each of their consistent personalities. I agree that the pacing is way off, because playing a Mario game does not go from start to mega boss right away. WHERE IS BOWSER JR?!?! I had pretty high expectations, I’ll admit, but I just don’t think this movie is suited to be stand-alone, and I think it should have ended with more suspense because I suspect that the amount of money the movie is making will convince the producers to make a sequel. I feel like the movie just really lacked some of the best and most recognizable characters from the game. Here are some more that I’m genuinely not sure why they weren’t there or barely shown: Daisy- I understand that it didn’t fit with the plot of the human world, but Daisy is one of the most iconic Mario characters of all time Thwomps- Just kinda weird they weren’t there Lakitu- They literally fell off rainbow road and the producers DIDN’T MAKE A LAKITU REFERENCE?? It seems so obvious Koopalings- With the amount that they are featured in the games, the movie really feels stale without them. Yes, Bowzer’s henchman Kamek was there, but I was honestly really disappointed that not even Bowzer Jr made an appearance Boos- This one is not that weird, but at one point, Luigi goes into a scary mansion with a flashlight and sees…. Dry Bones? They still made an effort to reference Luigi’s Mansion with the design of the mansion and the eerie music but I just think it would have been 10 times better of a scene if it referenced the game more directly. The rest of the Kong family- Although not a part of the Kong family, Diddy Kong was in the movie briefly. He should’ve came along on the adventure and I’m still mad he didn’t. Of course, Funky Kong was there and supposedly one or 2 of the Kong kids were in the arena stands, but I just don’t see why they put so much effort into creating a beautiful Kong town and then didn’t show the main characters from the games nearly enough. Wario and Waluigi- I get that it doesn’t make sense for the storyline but having them show up for a few seconds would have been a perfect opportunity for getting more people to see the movie. Just from a money making standpoint I don’t see why they didn’t make an appearance. Yoshi- Yes, Yoshi shows up on the background of a scene for a minute, however, since literally every middle aged white woman’s favorite character is Yoshi, couldn’t they have just given him a little bit more? Rosalina- Ok, so I have a lot to say about this one. A Luma was captured by Bowser, which means that Bowser has visited the vast galaxies. This implies that he went to literal outer space before he tried to capture any territories in his own world. It seems that the Luma in the movie has been imprisoned for a long time, meaning I think that Bowser came from outer space and traveled to the Toadstool/Penguin/Kong planet to attempt to colonize it. So, back to the Luma, if he has a Luma, he must have been to Rosalina’s planet. This creates my theory on a possible sequel. With that being said, I think a sequel will focus on the game Mario Galaxy, with Mario meeting Rosalina to help the Luma planet. At one point, Peach says something along the lines of “there’s a whole world out there Mario”, looking into the night sky. I also saw something saying the girl on the news station talking about the Brooklyn town flood is Pauline from the original Donkey Kong and I think that’s pretty cool. Overall I really did like the movie but I just think it feels empty because of the pacing issues you mentioned.
The movie is fine. Super well animated. Pretty thin plot. Nice references and all that. Voice acting was inoffensive/fine for the most part, except for jack black. He absolutely killed it. I can get pretty nit-picky about the plot if I want to but I still had fun with it. Solid 6/10.
If you're looking for personal feedback from your audience, I'd say I prefer your videos where you spend 30 minutes giving play-by-play and reviewing an old and possibly niche movie over this type of video, where you reviewed a new movie that everyone's watching right now with no hilarious play-by-play commentary
I went to see this with my bf and we both had low expectations but wow I loved it!!! its not perfect, but man is it fun, and the versions of the mario music we got were soooo good
Idk i never felt there was pacing issues especially for an animated movie. Mario isnt an amazing story. If you slow this story down it would suck. I think this is easily peak animation. Id say 8-9 out of 10
That endgame with the bros made me and gf SCREAM. This movie shattered my low expectations, and I’m glad you enjoyed it too!
