She beat Nadia and Nelli Kim at World Championships and was training for the 1980 Olympic Games when one of the national coaches, not her personal coach, pushed her to do a difficult move in which Elena was having difficulty and it resulted in a tragic accident. Elena was left paralyzed from the neck down. I will always remember her performance on the uneven bars where she did Olga Korbut’s back flip off the high bar and added a twist. She was definitely ahead of her time. R.I.P beautiful Elena. 😢

She never got to prove herself except for winning the World Title in 1977 or 1978 I believe over Nadia. The USSR tried to cover this up too! Shame on them!! Never forget this amazing gymnast. Elena errou muito por conta de sua dificuldade no solo especificamente, nas barras, trave e salto ela praticamente nunca falhava! Nádia fazia o básico do básico e só diluia as próprias séries, praticamente não sofreu lesões sérias, uma prova disso é comparar o solo de 79 com o de 80, ou suas apresentações desde 1974, nenhuma dificuldade além do comum na época, apenas movimentos robóticos e sem expressão alguma, ainda por cima 0 inovação (seu movimento nomeado é apenas uma cópia do Janz) diferente de Mukhina, Shaposhnikova, Filatova, Kim, Zakharova, Saadi, Korbut e outras...
Nádia teve mais sucesso no ginástica pois começou as 6 anos, Elena aos 12! Com 14 anos ela não sabi fazer um mortal duplo, precisa ter uma habilidade nata para se desenvolver tanto assim em apenas 1 ano (com 15 ela passou a competir com movimentos bem mais difíceis e em 76 ela já estava no topo no quesito dificuldade, tanto q só foi cortada das Olimpíadas pq queriam toda a equipe do começo dos anos 70, sem aceitar q essa era havia passado). Elena foi uma lenda, nem todos evoluiriam e ganhariam um mundial assim de repente.
