Dre don’t wanna rap man. He’s not inspired. If he wanted to do it he would, and it would be executed flawlessly. He could rap about his growth, about how his life has changed and his desires and passions have changed. He could rap about his travels, his children, his family, etc. but he simply doesn’t want to and that’s OKAY!

I've never taken Dre's opinion on this to extend outward to the rap world at large. It's always seemed to me that he's expressing his own outlook as it relates to himself, definitely not condemning other rappers for rapping into their 40s. Inspiration doesn't always take the same form and I give him big ups for being open about where he's at on his journey rn. He's like the definition of a genius you can't pin down

It's crazy Andre was saying this stuff when Black Thought has been writing some of his most personal and thoughtful verses to date and he's got three years on Andre.
Great take on all of this, Justin. I was pretty disappointed in Andre's comments, but I also share some sympathy with the idea that it takes something substantial from him to feel lyrically creative. People are different and draw creativity/inspiration under different conditions...

He’s been bringing up certain actions he’s against that goes on in hiphop culture even before. On ATliens, he raps; “No drugs or alcohol to keep the signal clear.” I think he just doesn’t want to rap anymore, but hearing someone say they don’t have anything to rap about, using the example he used with such a defeated tone, makes me think he’s been away from rap for so long, he may be insecure on how he would even do and would rather just do what he loves musically. He never just loved hip hop… he also LOVED playing instruments, and that’s okay he’d rather put his time in something else for the other part of his music career. 🤷🏽‍♀️

I commend André for not doing the same thing his whole career just because people (and peers) not only expect him to-- but also know he's more than capable to put out consistently killer projects.
He would always be relevant in rap if he chose to do it that way, but he's always been a different type of artist. If he doesn't feel motivated creatively to rap, it gets channeled elsewhere. He's proven he doesn't need to rap (I'm sure he probably writes privately) to fulfill his life creatively, and although I would love a new Outkast or solo project, it wouldn't bother me at all if it never happened. Wayne and a bunch of others will continue to keep the flame lit, or will at least provide the people with expected consistency and relevance in terms of rap.

He also said, can’t remember where atm but if I do I’ll edit this comment, that he considered doing stand up comedy and the colonoscopy comment was one of the jokes he considered telling in his sets.

I think there maybe different reasons to why he doesn't want to rap because when you look back he was part of a rap duo then he mainly does verses with features but he has not put out a solo single before so there could be something there that is unresolved because he is a writer and his process might be one of those where he needs to be prompted or inspired in some way (introspective) for example his verse and performance on life of the party is "mature" rap which is what he could do...

I hate to tell you this, But 3000 doesn’t owe anyone anything!
Let’s say that he does put out rap album, the aftermath is people are going to go straight to social media just to say that it’s trash and bitch and complain. Kanye can make mediocre bullshit, Lil Wayne can make mediocre bullshit, Drake can mediocre bullshit, But Andre 3000 can’t. The bar is set way too high. With that said, let the man make the art that he wants to make, and we should be stopped being entitled that he should do something that he doesn’t want to do. Nuff said

Justin: I'm interested in your Top 10 list, but I wonder if a more creative way to go about it is to rank the MC qualities you think are most important in formulating the list. I'm talking flow, writing, lyrics, creativity, impact, commercial success - whatever you think is important, right? I'm looking for a way to differentiate you content from the morass of ranking videos that are attacking the algo. Maybe lop your top MCs list onto the back of you Top Qualities list, so (in addition to the content differentiation) you're giving the methodology before the results.

40+ rappers who have released albums in 2023/2024. Alphabetical order, ages listed are at time of earliest listed release rather than current age.
    2 Chainz (45) + Lil Wayne (40) - Welcome 2 Collegegrove
Black Thought (51) - Glorious Game
    E-40 (56) - Rule of Thumb, Rule 1
Eminem (51) - The Death of Slim Shady
Future (40) - We Don't Trust You, We Still Don't Trust You
Ghostface Killah (54) - Set The Tone (Guns & Roses)
    Lupe Fiasco (42) - Samurai
    Kanye West (47) - Vultures, Vultures 2
Killer Mike (48) - MICHAEL, Songs for Sinners and Saints
    Nas (49) - Magic 2, Magic 3
    Rakim (56) - G.O.Ds NETWORK - REB7RTH
There might be more that I'm missing, this is all I could think of. That's 12 rappers, average age of 48.2, releasing 15 albums.
Andre 3000 was 48 (maybe 47) when he did that SCIENTISTS & ENGINEERS verse on MICHAEL. That's the Andre the fans want! His age is definitely just an excuse, but I think it's moreso an excuse for himself than it is an excuse for us.

You know damn well we want that top 10, stop asking rhetorical question 😂
Andre just isn't inspired. I think a lot of his best stuff came from conflict. Conflict he had within himself, conflict that he perceived in the world. Aquemini's my favorite Outkast track and is a great example of that. Outer and inner conflict, respectively in Andre's 1st and 2nd verse. He used rapping to reach better understanding of himself and the world around him. Maybe he has reached that understanding. Maybe, as he got older, he has found some inner peace, so he feels like rapping has no purpose.
And I kind of agree with him. Some rappers are keeping things fresh into their 50s, but most are rehashing ideas. At that age, you're either offering something brand new or competing with you own discography. Carter V was a good project, I'll go back to some tracks on it, but when I wanna listen to Wayne, I always put on C2 or C3.

  • @malcolmmalik

I always disagreed with Andre's view
Many poets and fiction writers write until they're gone, so it's weird to hear one of the most poetic rappers be like "what am I gonna talk about"
But I get it, he's grown out of it and wants to explore different forms, that's cool

I don't like trying to rap because a good verse requires too much vulnerability, as I've aged I value mental strength more I've changed so I can understand 3000 also we need top 10

      7) Nas
      8) Lauryn Hill *yea I said it*
      9) Ice Cube

And this is just to me based upon impact and influence on my life. Not measured on any BS numbers or popularity or hip hop politics.

Maybe you could do a top 10 Andre verses that still hold weight and apply to the world today, not much has changed since Gasoline Dreams, Bombs Over Baghdad, even songs like Humble Mumble still holds relevance. That said, of Andre 3000 doesn't feel he has anything to say then he probably won't produce anything he is satisfied with so I would rather him have his current mindset than go on like an old boxer past their prime going on to muddy their legacy. But if he still feels the way he used to about the world then he could write about those things in different ways. Or even modernise his message to tackle current issues and events
