Bird Photography with A Canon 7D + 70-200mm

  • I wanted to try something a little different and so I took my Canon 7D along with my 70-200mm lens and had a go at some bird photography. I briefly talk about my camera settings for bird photography too. I have done this kind of photography in the past albeit with limited success. The Canon 7D is the ideal camera body for bird or wildlife photography but my 70-200mm lens is only an f/4 at it's maximum aperture and so this kind of photography can be a bit of a struggle for me.

    Some great shots mate, love the robin one at 7:30! I’d suck at bird photography but that was smashing, the angle and composition. Sorry for your loss mate, couldn’t imagine. And respect that you’ve still been making videos, that’s true passion for the art, don’t worry about energy in video, your videos are great 👍 The GoPro POV + normal vlog angle combination was a good idea too. 12:40 was awesome, my fav.

    Great video Chris!...My advice as a wildlife photographer to you is to use servo mode on your 7D. Single shot is great for things that don't move,not so much for wildlife. Keep at it!! Cheers!!

    • @ChrisBaitson
      @ChrisBaitson  2 роки тому +7

      Thanks Vince. I realised after the fact I was in the wrong focus mode. Wildlife isn’t something I do much of but I’ve since grabbed a 1D3 and the 100-400 and I have had a lot more success with servo mode. One of thing things you don’t know until you know 🤦🏻‍♂️

    So sorry for your loss Chris. Really nice job with that little robin. Nice bokeh on that one, super helpful you could get so close with a more open aperture. Hope it was a therapeutic experience. Stay strong! 🤜🤛

    Hi Chris, great upload, sorry to hear about your brother, lost my daughter last year and have a small garden on my balcony with a small robin statue as she used to love feeding them! for a long time my camera 7D with 100-400mm lens was my go to wildlife setup. with regards to your approach today at the bird tables, i would have personally stayed out of their living room if you get my drift and not chasing them around, I tend to pick a spot with tripod (optional) which helps to create very little movement in varying all angles, watch for a while and see how they approach the different tables/feeders etc you get to know their movements, I think the light wasnt ideal but then wildlife photography has many many challenges to overcome, have a visit to many of the WWT where the wildlife are somewhat used to people walking around. I do take a scrim scarf to sometimes chuck over my head just to break up the outline and yes i have stayed still many a time in a bush etc. look forward to the next one dont give up, love your videos.

      Thanks for the tips. I’m going to try this again at some point - probably when I pick up a longer lens. I had a feeling chasing them was a bad idea but I just didn’t think it was going to be so hard.

    Looking at picking up an original 7d myself at the moment purely because they are a great bargain to be had - can get a mint example for under £200, iv just sold my bridge camera that iv had for a couple of years after selling some fujifilm gear - the lenses were just too expensive as a hobbyist for me to justify so got a bridge camera but im ready for a larger sensor and want something i can swap out lenses on. I was weighing up the M series stuff which appears to produce some nice images but lacks anything over 200mm ( i know you can adapt lenses but then the little m5/m50 becomes unbalanced).
    Got a few things in mind either buy the 7d mk2 and a cheaper sigma/tamron 70-300mm lens or buy a 7d and a 70-200 2.8 usm or 100-400 usm, even weighed up an 80d or nikon 7200 but its trying to price in what works!

    Sorry for your loss. I can’t imagine what you went through. I just got in to photography and I’ve been looking at the 7d, for how cheap it is and the amazing photos it takes, I currently have a t7 but I know it’s super user friendly, I’m trying to find something will be a little harder but will have a better outcome when it comes to learning.

    • @ChrisBaitson
      @ChrisBaitson  2 роки тому +1

      I’ve owned a lot of Canon cameras. They all work and function more or less the same. A 7D wouldn’t feel all that alien to you going from a T7. Button and menu layouts are almost the same on all of the Canon DSLRs.

    • @slutywhoreu
      @slutywhoreu 2 роки тому +1

      @@ChrisBaitson would a 7d be a good investment? I love my t7 and have owned it since 2018, I just feel like it lacks in focus points and shutter speed

    • @ChrisBaitson
      @ChrisBaitson  2 роки тому +3

      @@slutywhoreu The 7D only has 19 focus points so it’s not overwhelmingly complex. You can use them in groups which is useful though. A camera that old isn’t what I’d call an investment. More of a bargain I’d say. But they’re pretty capable still.

    Hey I've had mine since it came out, and have only used maybe a thousand snaps of the shutter. Your shots have that classic 7D look, and I'm going to pull it back out and start shooting with it a lot. Great vid. I did shoot a video with it and it turned out amazing, looks just like film. I think the low noise is a good thing for this camera , as it gives a real film look. keep up the great work.
