the shift began with reagan and the working class 'reagan democrats' in 1980 .. a group that had benefitted from strong unions and sharing gains from high productivity .. who then became more conservative as they aged and had something to 'protect' .. all that despite reagan's policies that undermined them and their children .. before 1984 social security benefits were NOT TAXED .. and it was no-tax reagan who then made it worse !!

Trump appeals to people that believe his lies. He himself is a member of the elite that wants to protect his friends. Saying "oh well, the GOP was never known for being a working class party" from the beginning before launching a hypothesis about how the elites have failed through specifically leftist policies is incredibly disingenuous.

How is the Republican Party the party of the working class?
What have they done to suggest that they will be the party of the working class for a while? Nothing

The conclusions of this guest are highly questionable - at best. Her presentation is full of sweeping characterizations (that Biden admitted hordes of "cartel slaves") that border on offensive. She blithely skips right over two Republican administrations, Bush I and II, simplistically laying all the woes of the working class at Democrats' feet. It feels like a Fox News commentary, to be honest.
And, she touches not at all on the elephant in the Trump room - race. Trump's every appeal to his version of "solidarity" is almost always implicitly or explicitly an appeal to the basest white racist tropes, of violent, dirty, diseased, sexually predatory black and brown people.
So good on you for hosting a variety of viewpoints. I'll leave it a that.

    • @init100
      @init100 Місяць тому

She lays it at the feet of the Democrats because they used to be the party of the working-class. The Republicans pre-Trump have always had the reputation of being a party of the wealthy.
The racism narrative about Trump was permanently shattered already in 2016 when he got 30% of both the Hispanic and the Asian votes, and 8% of the black vote.
That's when I knew that the racism narrative was made-up by Democrat stooges in the media.
In fact, it's the Democrats who are the racists. They make every issue into an issue of race and they elected a racist white president who told black voters that they "ain't black" if they don't vote for him, among many examples.

That's not a real Nikki Haley voter, just a Trump-deranged Democrat.

I dont buy it. If you look at American and European manufacturing, its been in decline since the end of WW2. Things like NAFTA and people like Thatcher and Reagan are a reaponse to the fact the Keynsian pact was a failure. Sure you had a few low skill manufacturing sectors doing better. But the rest of the economy was tanking. We simply could not afford to prop up all these industries that produced inferior products at inflated prices. Not with automation and the coming competition from Asia. Every developed country in the world realized this at the time and attempted the same reforms. Yeah, there were trade offs. But hindsight is 20-20 and we will never know the counter factual. Besides, its not like the EU is doing any better. Either economically or with its far-Right insurgency. In fact theyre doing even worse. Their working class is even more pissed than ours and they have all the protectionist policies and social welfare programs the Left keep telling me will solve everything. The malaise is social, not economic.

Cuz In The West , In America, for instance Any Company , That Focused on bettering itself, rather then profit , Wall Street would immiedely advise investors to dump their stock, and the credit agencies would right away downgrade their credit ratings You would see as tens of billions of dollars a market capitalization vaporize overnight.
China, and many Countries Such as India, practice protectionist policies,
The EU has been ravaged by Austerity, Such As The UK.
It wasn't Hindsight, It was Class-war
in the 1970s-1990s , Capitalists increased unemployment and homelessness to discipline wages to ensure satisfactory profitability and maintain a useful social domination of the working class.
Extreme, fixed poverty isn’t an unfortunate byproduct of meritorious competition punishing the lazy but is, in fact, an essential and eternal feature of capitalism , at least back then, explicitly designed to discipline bottom rung labor and suppress wages.

Listened to this last night at work. I work at Walmart, so I figure I'm one of the people she was speaking for.....
That said, how in the ever loving F can you then say Trumpty Dumpty is the best answer???? You used the old "Born on third base and think they hit a triple" and it works. She probably has some solid points. But when you're backing a guy that was born on 3rd base and thinks he hit a Home Run, then your assessment comes into question.
Trumpty has no policy. He lies. He commits a wide range of crimes. He has a golden toilet. He cheats at everything from golf to elections. He is dumb as a box of rocks. Okay, I'll stop. I've made my point.
When it comes to Trumpty and the economy, I always ask, "What did HE do to make it?" Gas prices were low in 2015 and 2016. So he didn't improve a thing. He just cruised for 3 years. Then disaster struck, and he bungled till he got voted out. I felt 2nd hand embarrassment the whole time Trumpty Dumpty represented us too......

However, i also hear alot of people who's opinions are not of understanding, but of narcissistic seeking of validation, from their anointed group. The one's who mostly work from home, don't really care much about higher fuel costs or the fact that 10 million + immigrants, will pull working wages down, and drive up the cost of renting, or buying a home. Even for the higher income people, who are under the false impression that they are somehow insulated from the effects of the things, that are becoming debilitating for people like me.
I hate that it has come to the point, where the two major parties, don't bother to even placate people like me. I used to feel that i had a shot at prosperity. That's feeling much less likely now. I am a fed up with inflation, gas prices, food prices and the growing list of road blocks, that keeps piling up, thanks to a government that doesn't give two s****, about anyone who used to matter.
I will listen to politicians, but if they are intrenched, and beholden to massive corporate funding for their campaigns, then i am certain that they will owe so much to their masters, that I, and the millions of people like me, will continue to be forgotten, or even challenged further.
Trump is the only politician, who at least, is speaking to people like me, and actually isn't just pandering. If you haven't walked a mile in working-class shoes, then you will never understand what I, or this brilliant woman has to say. What she is saying affects the Trump haters too. Yeah there’s a big disconnect in what she is spewing. I thought it was interesting and then she started bashing Democrats… I forgot that only Republicans are “working people”…. I have voted both parties and l need to know why if l vote for Democrats am l not a “working person”, middle class… ridiculous l won’t even speak on race.

I feel like neither Party is recognizes these issues. I really feel like the problem is that big capital. Both parties are too beholden to the rich and the system fixed to make them richer and neither party helps pass laws that fail to circumvent it. My only prayer is that we don't elect a criminal that is why I'll have to vote against Trump. Trump made NAFTA worse. Also Trump taking away woman's right to choose is a real looser for Trump.

There is going to be a huge cut in white collar jobs over the next few years due to AI. This will create a large contingent of downwardly mobile middle class people with less wealth and less opportunities than their parents enjoyed. And they will be competing for low-skill jobs with all the immigrants we are letting in, and the immigrants themselves will not have the hope of getting into the "American Dream" college-educated, white collar job class (because it will have shrunk so drastically). Re-industrialization, if it happens, won't really help because factories don't employ that many people--there's no GM factories employing entire cities on the assembly line anymore. AI/automation, outsourcing, and mass immigration will create a large and mostly hopeless population that the government will need to infuse with money somehow simply to fuel the consumer economy it created. The only thing sustaining the system is reduced costs for goods and services--so you can afford a nice TV in the crowded apartment you share. The future isn't looking so bright so it shouldn't surprise anyone that populism is on the rise.

A college education is not an american dream what people really want is financial freedom, working hard for a employer is never going to give you financial freedom only entrepreneurship
will give you that especially if wealth is created but personally having free time and lifestyle is to me ideal,I have to ask this question if a person was making a minimum one million dollars a month would they stay at their job and if you like your job kept working it but for many people they hate their job or not making enough and by the way their is another advantage about people who own have better tax advantages than a worker having a financial education is very powerful and this is not an education based on paper degrees it is based on real learning not theory one last thing is that the game of money is rigged against the working class because money itself is not real it is Fiat so to speak since we were taken off the gold standard money became debt so it is you have to work harder to work for less and less.

Lady. Trump has no policy. He gets up, watches the news, decides what is going to be his obsession today, says lots of things specifically to upset people on social media, has a few useless meetings with advisors. His white house constantly had to run around trying to put on paper something like an agenda or an ideology and there just isnt one. I can put aside his personality - but I cant put aside that his world never gets much larger than his office and his golf courses.

From preface to All Minus One: John Stuart Mill’s Ideas on Free Speech:
※ First, the other person’s idea, however controversial it seems today, might turn out to be right. ("The opinion may possibly be true." -J.S. Mill)
※ Second, even if our opinion is largely correct, we hold it more rationally and securely as a result of being challenged. ("He who knows only his own side of the case, knows little of that." -J.S. Mill)
※ Third, and in [John Stuart] Mill’s view most likely, opposing views may each contain a portion of the truth, which need to be combined. ("Conflicting doctrines share the truth between them." -J.S. Mill)
