Just to clarify, Blender 2.9's line select hot key is Shift + Alt now instead of just Alt.

When you shade smooth, make sure to enable auto smooth as well. It makes the weird shading go away.

You can press shift z and it will put you into wireframe and then if you do while in wire frame it will put you back into whatever one you were in.
