I don't have to explain them it's because they are the last one but the middle one is correct they are more social then the first and last one which is good because they have more friends. if you say "but the middle one must respect the first one and is responsible for what the last one does" is also true but not in this way. They tell you to respect the first one because they are also responsible for what YOU AND the last child do. I'm the middle child who has an older brother who is irresponsible but was given the benefit of the doubt and he kept making mistakes. Instead of fixing their mistakes on my older brother they took it out on me and over fix things on me. Then they babied my Youngest sibling because she is the baby and saw only great potential.

Something you should add to middle child: Gets caught in the middle (oops just made a bad joke) of events that they didnt cause in any way. The middle child also gets scholded at by their parents.
Everyone but the youngest gets scolded and everyone gets caught in the middle of an argument between the other two at some point thats just part of having siblings lol
I have very sensitive ears and want to cry when i get yelled at and my parents are good parents but they get mad when i don’t turn in two assignments and i have to be peacemaker when my little brother with autism and my teenage older get mad at each other. I am very quiet and loud at home sometimes but i am mainly quiet and keep to myself and i was once embarrassed about something happening and was talking to me and she yelled it out and i want to hide in my bed with a good texture blanket.

Yea it happens to me as well, i am an only child and I have learned to do everything myself. And I have grow to be very independent of my parents or anybody, I enjoy my time alone and can perfectly be fine by myself. I also question if it would have been different with siblings...
I was an only child and my parents cared more about themselves than me. Only children also can be the subject for parents to be more controlling if one is unlucky to be born to an abusive family. It's even worse because you don't have siblings to rely on.

Psych2Go Being an only child has its pros and cons. Pros include me getting all my parents affection and attention + resources. And cons include loneliness (which I experience often).
Besides being spoiled materially, my experience was mostly negative. As the only one, I developed anxiety because I had unattainable expectations placed on me to succeed, I was treated as a pet more than a child because my parents didn’t have a frame of reference for parenting children, my parents were extremely protective of me so they wouldn’t let me hang out with just anyone, leading to me becoming socially stunted and unable to make friends or even behave normally in social situations. Sure us only kids get “spoiled” (I put spoiled in quotations because... like how are we not? We’re the only kid they’ve got), but rarely do we come out as well as children with siblings. It’s no fun being “spoiled” when you’re in a room full of toys and no one to play with. The envy needs to stop. There’s nothing to envy.

Actually first born who have more than 2 or 3 siblings are people who are serious when it come to things.They are caring and basically they shoo off other younger ones if they do things wrong in wrong way.They are more matured or become matured compared to their peers due to the responsibilities and there experiences.They are more patient too.

I'm last born and I use fancy words( I say this everyday at my job) we have to organize the books sequentially so it will be easier for the consumer to find it.
I'm a first born child and I don't think it is true either I am terrible at math and science, I am always nervous, and when I was younger I took speech classes because I couldn't speak very well. The middle child is true to the 3rd older child in my family. The 2nd older sibling is always compared to me because he doesn't try at all. The youngest sibling doesn't listen to anyone in my family, is super rude and mean doesn't exactly try and gets mad easily.
I thought longer about this and my thesis is that many of these things are because of how your parents treated you. Many who were last born, probably weren't treated like one, but often you can find similar tendencies in families and this is on what this is based on.

I am a first-born and honestly I really like taking charge, and i think that's because first-borns are more independent and a take charge person because when another sibling is born, the parents give more attention to the baby than you. Also, there's a likely chance that the older sibling had to take care of the younger sibling at some point, giving the older sibling a sense of domination. Last-borns, i think, are more used to following directions and going with the flow, since their older sibling has probably told them what to do many times. i think middle children can see the world more clearly and honestly than others because they have both a sense of dominance and listening. I agree with you, for me i was in some part of my life the youngest in the family, then for 2-3 years i was the middle child, and after that the oldest which i felt around my 15-16 year of life, so somehow i went thru all stages and i think i'm carrying some of the traits from all of them.

But also, even if it wasn't, if they only surveyed Chinese families, then the data would be skewed. So either way there's got to be a better study on the effects of being an only child.

Group projects at school work better with friends for me (a.k.a. people I'm comfortable with), too and I try to lead the project in the "right" direction and split the work among us equally. If I don't know the persons, I barely say a word.

When you expected to be an only child and already taught yourself how to be independent, and entertain yourself without other kids. Then when your sibling is born, your age gap is too wide for you to understand each other. You end up pushing away your sibling, because you are used to being independent. You get angry, because you are not used to having someone follow you around and talk non stop. Or at least that's my case. I love my little sister but man.
My brother is on the middle , for some reasons im really proud and encourage him drawing and sculpting while others well they say good things but a little encouragement . I will hear my mom says like " Youre drawing again " or " Youre sculpting again thats what you do every day" . Mostly my brother will show me first his masterpieaces before to others .
Very interesting, and almost precisely accurate. I do find that older siblings tend to base their choices on logic, rather than younger siblings who base their choices on emotion; which would then lead to many other defining personality traits. I am the eldest sibling and have a younger sibling, and this describes our personalities (though general) rather well.

Being an only child can be great, cause you dont have someone to constantly be in your way or annoy you at home (no siblings). The downside is that you dont really learn any social skills or at least have less. It can also make your parents more anxious, and if they were caucious before, they will become the worst Helikopter parent duo you could ever think of. I grew up having my parents do everything for me and being given stuff all the time, but i never learned how to do things on my own and became an anxious mess. Now that im an adult they suddenly switched to "you have to do it all alone" and left me in the dark. Youre totally dependent on your parents all the time and there is no one to be there for you or take your side in a fight because your parents have to stick together against the horrible person they created. Im happy I didnt have to deal with siblings, but know that as an only child youll be on youre one, once youre an adult and when you fight with your parents and youll have a much harder time dealing with the harsh world out there.
i'm the first born and got the worst grades and the middle child for higher and then the youngest got the highest and i think that's more like realistic because our parents learnt how to help us through each child and because i was first they would have known the least.

I have very sensitive ears and want to cry when i get yelled at and my parents are good parents but they get mad when i don’t turn in two assignments and i have to be peacemaker when my little brother with autism and my teenage older get mad at each other. I am very quiet and loud at home sometimes but i am mainly quiet and keep to myself and i was once embarrassed about something happening and was talking to me and she yelled it out and i want to hide in my bed with a good texture blanket.
Both of my younger siblings blame everything on me, so normally I get scolded.

Yea it happens to me as well, i am an only child and I have learned to do everything myself. And I have grow to be very independent of my parents or anybody, I enjoy my time alone and can perfectly be fine by myself. I also question if it would have been different with siblings...

Besides being spoiled materially, my experience was mostly negative.
As the only one, I developed anxiety because I had unattainable expectations placed on me to succeed, I was treated as a pet more than a child because my parents didn’t have a frame of reference for parenting children, my parents were extremely protective of me so they wouldn’t let me hang out with just anyone, leading to me becoming socially stunted and unable to make friends or even behave normally in social situations.
Sure us only kids get “spoiled” (I put spoiled in quotations because... like how are we not? We’re the only kid they’ve got), but rarely do we come out as well as children with siblings.
It’s no fun being “spoiled” when you’re in a room full of toys and no one to play with. The envy needs to stop. There’s nothing to envy.

Actually first born who have more than 2 or 3 siblings are people who are serious when it come to things.They are caring and basically they shoo off other younger ones if they do things wrong in wrong way.They are more matured or become matured compared to their peers due to the responsibilities and there experiences.They are more patient too.

I'm last born and I use fancy words( I say this everyday at my job) we have to organize the books sequentially so it will be easier for the consumer to find it.
I'm a first born child and I don't think it is true either I am terrible at math and science, I am always nervous, and when I was younger I took speech classes because I couldn't speak very well. The middle child is true to the 3rd older child in my family. The 2nd older sibling is always compared to me because he doesn't try at all. The youngest sibling doesn't listen to anyone in my family, is super rude and mean doesn't exactly try and gets mad easily.
I thought longer about this and my thesis is that many of these things are because of how your parents treated you. Many who were last born, probably weren't treated like one, but often you can find similar tendencies in families and this is on what this is based on.

I am a first-born and honestly I really like taking charge, and i think that's because first-borns are more independent and a take charge person because when another sibling is born, the parents give more attention to the baby than you. Also, there's a likely chance that the older sibling had to take care of the younger sibling at some point, giving the older sibling a sense of domination.
Last-borns, i think, are more used to following directions and going with the flow, since their older sibling has probably told them what to do many times.
i think middle children can see the world more clearly and honestly than others because they have both a sense of dominance and listening. I think middle children are the best kind of people when they grow up because they're very down to earth.

When you expected to be an only child and already taught yourself how to be independent, and entertain yourself without other kids. Then when your sibling is born, your age gap is too wide for you to understand each other. You end up pushing away your sibling, because you are used to being independent. Being an only child can be great, cause you dont have someone to constantly be in your way or annoy you at home (no siblings). The downside is that you dont really learn any social skills or at least have less. It can also make your parents more anxious, and if they were caucious before, they will become the worst Helikopter parent duo you could ever think of. I grew up having my parents do everything for me and being given stuff all the time, but i never learned how to do things on my own and became an anxious mess. Now that im an adult they suddenly switched to "you have to do it all alone" and left me in the dark. Youre totally dependent on your parents all the time and there is no one to be there for you or take your side in a fight because your parents have to stick together against the horrible person they created. Im happy I didnt have to deal with siblings, but know that as an only child youll be on youre one, once youre an adult and when you fight with your parents and youll have a much harder time dealing with the harsh world out there.

NOPE ! I did and they only said the only child has "higher life satisfaction" ! No mention of how an only child is different leadership or intelligence, religion, social abilities, social skills that was mentioned for the 1st born , 2nd , ETC

They should list each characteristic for ALL TYPES, not different categories for each type.
Like 2nd born were less religious than 1st or last born. Only child NOT INCLUDED

Social skills, NOT INCLUDED.

Listen more closely next time you accuse someone else. I make plenty of mistakes but if someone is wrong I don't say someone is an idiot. And I miss things frequently too.

No, they say the only child has "higher life satisfaction". Am I the only one that noticed this ? Maybe because I am one probably pay more attention to it. But they spent almost no time on only children. See my other comment for SEVERAL other things not compared and I didn't even list them all.
And they didn't even mention life satisfaction for the other children, just a general "higher".

Did they ever think that the 1st child is and ONLY CHILD for a period of time ? Therefore probably shares many things with an only child ? No mention of that either !

I don't know how common only children are, I will have to find it. 10 - 23% according to Yahoo Answers, I've no idea if that is right for my lengthy 3 minute investigation...

This reminds me of a guy that faked being crazy to get out of a murder charge mentioned on Ted Talks. Everything he did was made to look like a disorder ! He didn't want to spend time with other people their, he is CLEARLY anti-social. It didn't matter that he didn't want to be around a murderer or pedophile !

James You make a very good point but in your original comment you stated that there was "no mention of the only 1 child" and that they "missed this out completely" so those points didn't get across in the first comment, but I definitely agree with you on the topics they picked (btw, I'm also an only child too :3)

Or... maybe it's just that we have higher expectations on us to be perfect than those placed on our younger siblings? Failure was not an option for me, and yes, a "B" counted as a failure. My three younger brothers? So long as they passed, they were fine.
Last children didn't get as much as the first two, how cliche! Described my siblings pretty well but not the last borns at all.
in my family the last born (my little sister) gets way more because I'm older and I'm supposed to be more responsible than her but I'm not

I'm first born of 3 kids. I'd say I am less outgoing than the other 2, I am not the smartest mathematically, that's my brother (middle) My brother is the one exceeding in most things while me and my little sister are behind, she is outgoing but lazy, very spoiled.
While being the only child also sucks because you will always feel lonely while you are growing up because you have no sibling to play , spend , compete with.

I highly disagree with that.
I understand the personality part being different but just saying that you basically won’t be smart because your not a first borne is a little offensive to me being a last born.
I would definitely say that I’ve met some middle borne and last borne kids that are very intelligent/smart and have great leadership skills.
