    I love watching this family, mainly because of the beautiful environment they live in and how content and happy they are! Is this what an upper middle class/rich gorilla family looks like? They have a green large area to roam living plants and trees and other wildlife that peacefully coexist. Plus the housekeeping staff that clean their rooms and make the beds. LOL Kitchen staff that deliver their meals, free healthcare, they truly are living their best lives as it should be! Makes me feel even sadder when I think of how a lot of the gorilla families I watch are living, in cramped sterile quarters with little to no greenery and little to no stimulation, it's quite depressing!

      While I agree it is a bit sad, it's important to remember that nonprofit zoos are entirely dependent on their local governments to receive grants and update their enclosures. It's often not their fault, but the disasterous economy that much of the world has to contend with and the public's lack of trust.
      Slowly, they are being replaced by more comfortable enclosures like this one, but only in due time and with extremely careful budgeting. It takes a village, so they say, and the WAZA exists to ensure the best measures are taken to eventually prepare animals in captivity for independent living in the wild... if we can save the wild before it's too late...

      @@michaelmannix1604 The operative word is "if", we are barely able to save ourselves in light of the current state of the world today. I understand the economic struggles of some/most countries, just wish they would do what's in the best interest of the animals and shutdown. Transfer the animals to an appropriate contained sanctuary with space that will allow them a environment where they can be safe yet provided for monitored and thrive. I realize this is pie in the sky thinking, but it's my hope , one day!

    • @michaelmannix1604

      @@swamp5050 Again, "if"-sanctuaries cost money too, and there are bad sanctuaries just like there are bad zoos... It's not so easy to say it's in an animal's best interest to be relocated or released if they've become accustomed to those environments.
      For example, Patrick the gorilla in Riverbanks Zoo had a difficult upbringing and doesn't relate well with other gorillas, and after many failed attempts to reacclimate him to a troop, it was deemed the only place he was comfortable was in solitude in his own enclosure. Sadly, there are many older gorillas alive today that come from an era when zoos were far less perfect, and they suffer similar shyness. There's no real way to change that as far as we've been able to tell. It would be too cruel to force them into living conditions they did not consent to, so there they stay.
      Luckier animals may be paired with mates and produce offspring that can grow under more "normal" conditions, such was the case with Momotaro and Genki of Kyoto City Zoo who otherwise wouldn't have stood a chance at proper gorilla socialization. Then their children will go on to have more children, and ideally somewhere down the line they'll be able to produce descendants capable of surviving in the wild. About a month ago, this was successfully done with the help of the Aspinall Foundation in coordination with ZooParc de Beauval, a zoo in France.
      It takes patience, not perfection. In my opinion, sending animals to sanctuaries should be a last resort in the event they are no longer capable of being socialized with their own species. Even those crappier looking zoos can be lifesavers in the long run.

      @@michaelmannix1604 I appreciate some of what you're saying but you highlighted Momotaro and Genki at Kyoto Zoo is where I take issue! Kyoto Zoo is the worst, not just for the gorillas, someone uploaded a video of most of the animal housed there a couple of yrs ago. The condition of the animals and they're enclosures were/are appalling, if you haven't seen it I suggest you do. I stopped viewing the videos of Momotaro's family, it was too depressing but I've popped in recently. Momotaro was segregated from the family because he was ill, Genki seem the same, eating constantly as usual but Gentaro and Kintaro looked listless and depressed. I just can't go there anymore for my own mental health, that place is horrible and the animals have suffered. I can't imagine taking children to see animals in such a state!!

    • @michaelmannix1604
      @michaelmannix1604 2 роки тому +7

      @@swamp5050 That was the point I was getting at-Kyoto Zoo needs HELP, not to be shut down. Your idealist vision clouds reason and sensibility.
      You didn't listen to what I was saying at all. Momotaro and Genki are an odd case in that their histories prevent them from living customarily. For this reason, they're kept in a smaller enclosure more suited for their needs. First of all, they have more room to climb than most gorillas thanks to the steel framework on all sides and above. Their enclosure is also more protected from disturbances from the visitors, especially sound (and intruders, lest we forget what happened to Harambe). While it's admittedly lacking in greenery, grass is finally sprouting now, and they have quite a number of enrichments at their disposal to extend their simulated foraging. It's not perfect, but it's better than euthanizing them for being mildly aberrant.
      Yes, Momotaro recently became ill, but under controlled conditions. He was being treated for a sore on his jaw but had an adverse reaction to the antibiotics, so they stopped those to help him regain his appetite. It's not an easy task medicating wild animals capable of snapping your ribs when they're angry. Kintaro has been emotionally affected by this to a degree, but again, it's not exactly worse than living in the wild where Momotaro would have died and Kintaro would have been brutally crushed to death by a bachelor silverback looking to mate with Genki. Don't pretend like animal care is all daisies and sunshine; it requires a lot of stress to get them ready for life on their own.
      Just like Tayari and Jabali-many people are angered by her more lax methods of raising a child, but they ignore how beneficial her reservation has been for him. Jabali is strong and heady, and he's already becoming quite independent, unlike Kintaro who was doted over for perhaps far too long by his mother. Humans and animals aren't built the same way at all, and their lives necessitate a good deal of discomfort unlike ours. We can do whatever we can to limit their stressors, but we cannot impede on their independence unless it is to save their lives.
      So far, Kyoto Zoo has only improved Momotaro, Genki, and their sons' lives, whether you'd want that life for yourself or not. I'm sure when Gentaro and Kintaro move out and start their own families in other zoos, they'll be all the stronger than Momotaro and Genki.
      Trust me, if you can't stomach to see them at Kyoto City Zoo, don't bother reading into how wild gorillas really live. It's a sad, painful world out there that's brimming with bloodshed and disease. But that's what they have to go back to eventually.
