Exclusive: Whistleblower reveals misogyny and racism in West Midlands Police

- West Midlands Police stands accused of misogyny, discrimination and claims of a predatory culture at the heart of its firearms unit.
Rebecca Kalam, a detective inspector with the force until July, told Channel 4 News that her former employers had failed to properly investigate and challenge those involved in alleged crimes and toxic behaviours.
In an exclusive interview with this programme, she says she’s breaking her silence over fears, in her words, that "we'll end up with another Wayne Couzens", who murdered Sarah Everard.

Racism is the most important criticism here. I have been stopped by an armed officer in the past because I waa driving a really expensive Lamborghini paid for by my company. Long story short, sued the police force and won in court. We need to be tough on these racist police officers.

She is so brave. She absolutely did the right thing. What bad behavior from an institution that's supposed to be serving and protecting. What a mess they have in the West Midland police department.
I as former Police Officer have filed an employment tribunal vs Metropolitan Police due to racism, targeted, xenophobia, homophobia bullied, contaminated my lockers and PPE missing. I resigned due to this, I seen other new commmers crying they are bring bullied coming from different backgrounds. My health has been affected for life, I had to go induced coma for operation due to contamination from job and its ruined everything for a future as an ethnic minority.

How can we believe the majority of cops are honest, when every time a case like this comes up, we find the cahin of command have protected the guilty, and penalised the victim?
Do you remember the West Midlands Serious Crime Squad, the Brimingham 6 and Bridgewater 4?....
If not, look it up and you will find nothing has changed in 50 years.

I completed thirty years in the police service retiring a few years ago. I gave Channel 4 an exclusive on these issues, relating to GMP, around a decade ago. With brave other members of staff we were interviewed by Channel 4 - I am unaware of any programme being broadcast from those interviews.
It is interesting to see the elevated stance Channel 4 is taking now. It is the right thing to do but their hands are anything but clean as far as I am concerned.
What is your actual point? This is about the police, not Channel 4 and from the sounds of things, you agree with this ex policewoman, so really your comment doesn't make a whole lot of sense. "Elevated position"? It's just a report.
GMP is a racist police force. me and my family have been going through racism from our neighbours and the GMP don't want the paper work
I’ve been targeted from GMP for being in the Right place when GMP officers have done wrong .
I testified against them in the William John Hinde a father of 3 killed on the side of the M60 motorway .
Two Gmp officers Handcuffed this man and then repeatedly punched him in the face until he choked to death on his false teeth 😢 Then these two vile cops decided to place a bag of cocaine in his mouth . That was to make it look like he’d caused his own death ! But the autopsy didn’t lie and the sad thing was the victims family never received any justice and I had to watch them cry when these officers was allowed to carry on being police .
Another thing ! You know the law about Criminals trying to intimidate witnesses before court is a very serious crime !
But GMP are allowed to intimidate and also make false charges. Plus the kickings I’ve had from them ! I’ve lost count .
Sad thing now ! I have two very young children that are both type 1 diabetics .
GMP have now targeted them with some very nasty and very serious criminal acts .
Thank god my home is cctv and can prove my kids never left the house at the time you claimed these crimes was committed.

How is the officer that filmed women without their consent only being investigated for misconduct? Isn’t the recording and distribution of sexual material without consent a crime? I hate that police, who should be held to a higher standard than the general public, seem to be allowed to get away with multiple crimes. How is anyone meant to trust the police?

Although I've never been a copper I lived in a police family. None of this surprises me. The miners strike was seen as a cash cow, overtime was off the scale and the gloves off attitude was truly shocking. Nothing has changed.
Worked with a girl who dad was a copper then, she’d pipe up about Maggie being on side on the fuzz.
What a brave woman. Wishing her all the very best, there's numerous layers of shock and trauma she's took on, all for just being a decent human. Fair play to her for speaking out. You never know how hard it is to speak out against your colleagues into you've been there.

It's actually a national issue that stretches far beyond the police, but when it's those that we are supposed to look up to for protecting society need to be taught how to respect others then it's a huge problem. Many many others have witnessed the attitudes coming from police officers that need training just not be vulgar to other people. We all know it exists and she is just confirming it.
Too many dinosaurs in the profession which totally undoes the hard work and dedication for the decent police officers aka decent people out there.

As unsurprising to hear that racism, sexism, and many other isms still run rampant in the police force, it doesn't make it any less disappointing and frustrating. Thankfully, it's not every officer, as I've spoken with some who appeared to be kind and professional.
That case of the married police woman being sexually involved with multiple colleagues should've at least been a wakeup call to many members of the public who are in denial about wrong doings in the force.
Unfortunately, this isn’t very surprising at all. It’s only a few bad apples” they say. What this whistleblower is revealing is a culture of this disgusting behaviour, which infects even those with the best of intentions. The entire institution is rotten to the core.
Even though , when the institution itself says " It's only a few bad apples" ..The original meaning is as you outline.
A few bad apples and the whole lot are tainted and must be thrown away because they are all likely to have participated in wrong-doings or stood aside and let it happen.

I quit the police on Monday. It was meant to be my dream job. Instead it turned into a nightmare. I’ve never met so many unfriendly and uncaring people in my life. Glad I’ve left….

Whatever is happening in the West Midlands Police, multiply it by 6 or 7 times in order to get a handle on what is happening in the Metropolitan Police. In London, the root problems start at Hendon Police College. The Met is not fit for purpose.
I warned of potential for attack on a prisoner in complaint to WM Police before Sarah Everard case. You are without doubt predicting what is highly likely to happen at this rate.
Problem is police try to portray they are angles; in reality, they’re human beings! When you ignore this simple fact, problems arise.
The reality the smartest of society don’t go on to be policemen. I can just imagine it’s a culture of yobbish lads. Name and shame them !
I would like to suggest the British police get trained in diversity by the Singapore or Malaysian police.

Police are drawn from society - many hard working honest and respectful and many lazy - dishonest and disrespectful . The good ones don’t see the worst behaviour of the bad ones because they skulk around together. Work hard - respect is earned - treat people fairly and you will be respected.

Because alot of the top elite police corps have misognyst and racist vieuws themself. Also there is ''police code'' where you don't ''snitch'' on your fellow police officer. My son was harassed when he was just 11 in metro they called him insulting thing told him we will call u hakan gave him name opened his lunch box by saying maybe there's a weapon drug or something he had to take off his socks nd everything just because he was traveling with his mother's metro ticket card for school.
