- Colossus had been reprofiled several times since it opened, with the most significant one coming just a year after it opened in 1979. The last change was done in 1991 to the pair of camelback hills on the parking lot side. However, those changes were nothing compared to what was to come. In 2014 the coaster was closed and deconstructed for an RMC (Rocky Mountain Construction) Iron Horse conversion from an all wooden to a steel hybrid coaster called Twisted Colossus, which opened in 2015.
You can also watch the Twisted Colossus on-ride POV video we posted to see what this thrilling coaster looks like after the conversion: • Twisted Colossus front...

What I will forever miss about this ride was when it was Halloween time and the ride use to go backwards and ALL of the lights were off!
That was amazing!
Six flags great adventure used to have rolling thunder go backwards on occasion yoo
I remember when they did that and I was too little to ride it backwards I was so mad 😂😂😂
I live right by six flags great America and they have a wooden roller coaster called American Eagle just like this, it has 2 tracks that race, and we have a wooden coaster called Viper and for fright fest around Halloween, they sometimes have the trains go backwards and they had the trains go backwards for Batman the ride once

Lol I'm here because of the Marathon
This was the roller coaster used on Step by Step.
R.I.P Colossus. My favorite ride at Six Flags.
I was one of the last people to ride this ride on the 17th. They gave an extra night to let employees ride it one last time.
I wish I was one of those people. It’s a decision I will regret. At the time when Colossus was giving everyone its last rides as the Classic iconic majestic coaster we all knew and love I was not in a good place in my life not financially, emotionally or physically. I didn’t believe I could ride a roller coaster again. As it turns out, the only thing keeping me from doing so was me. Anyway, even though I didn’t get to ride I was happy that the park didn’t demolish Colossus but gave it a makeover. I saw Twisted Colossus from the freeway and it looked very much like Colossus but also very strange with its colorful twisted track. I was looking at it from a load so it was hard to image what it was like. This was shortly after it was made over. I stayed away and after several years of a life l style change and reflection my life for better. I recently decided to go to Magic Mountain specifically for Twisted Colossus. It took me a while to work up the courage but it’s once again my favorite Roller Coaster of all time.
Not that Twisted Colossus wasn't an obvious improvement, but man...this was a stunning ride...wish I could have seen it prior to its upgrades.
Stunning ? Looks boring and slow as fuck good drops yes but straight track and turn around after everyone hell nah
@@Jayx00x This version of the ride was a shell of the original. That mid course brake run was a double down (I think) for many years that launched people out of their seats. Six Flags flattened it out and murdered the speed of the rest of the ride in the process in 1991. I believe they wanted to turn it into a block zone and get rid of the "excessive air time." You can find old pictures of the original layout online, it looked awesome.
Had this coaster lived at a different park or Six Flags didn't own Magic Mountain, the "upgrades" they did to it over the years may never have happened and it could still be a star attraction today.
@@mhtube01 maybe u right I can’t say much I never ride it but imo it looks boring and slow just a few drops then it gets slow
@@Jayx00x I never rode it either and I agree this version does look pretty boring. It had gotten rough over the years too and the paint was chipped too. I was just saying the original layout was a much different animal than this video portrays the ride to be. It left a lot to be desired before being converted to Twisted Colossus. Now it still had a more basic out and back layout but the original had a lot more speed and looked much more thrilling. Plus it raced back then so it had that going for it. It's too bad Six Flags just let it go and made changes for the worse in their typical fashion.
@@Jayx00x I think colossus is taller than twisted
I remember when I first rode this ride a pretty long time ago. It was my first ride in Six Flags. I'll be going back in 5 days and for sure I'll ride the new version.

Classic! I really hope that in the future there be a few classic and iconic wooden roller-coaster that will be preserved as they are so generations to come can have the experience. I don't think every woody needs to get the RMC treatment or otherwise converted to some sort of hybrid. I love all those too, but I hope we can preserve some of our coaster heritage.
Hopefully Ghost Rider at KBF will be around for a while. I always liked Colossus more as it didn't thrash your body the way GR does. Colossus was faster too (62 mph vs 56) Oh and Giant Dipper in Santa Cruz is still running too. Pretty amazing considering it was built in 1924.
I totally agree with this, having American Eagle at my home park.
Giant Dipper 2 in San Diego is also still going. I have always liked wooden coasters better than metal.
@@felixheksteryou home
Park is Great America? That’s cool. I want to travel there and ride American Eagle. It broke my beloved Colossus’s record but that’s ok maybe it would be like riding its twin
Don’t get me wrong, I have fallen in love with Twisted Colossus because it still have the classic Colossus DNA and it’s heart and soul so essentially it’s still my beloved Colossus with a major makeover. But I would have loved to see it get a complete and full restoration to its majestic iconic fabulous glory complete with the double down camel backs (still don’t understand why the leveled that part out). Even if the Classic Colossus never ran again but it was restored and preserved as a national landmark and museum attraction that would have been my preference. However, I still would rather see it as the modified hybrid than to see it demolished.
Colossus was my first "big coaster" when I was just 7 years old. I have so many good memories of this ride during many different phases in my life. Memories of marathoning it with my big brother and sister and mom, especially when the lines would be super short or non-existent lol. Sooo much fun. One time we even convinced the operator to just send us through again without making us get off, because there was literally NO ONE waiting to ride behind us, and we were already strapped in. Sooooo much fun! And it was a night ride! What's crazy is I've been on the ride when the queues would be super long, and I've also had days where we could marathon the hell out of it. Middle school, we took trips to Six Flags on several occasions and again, my friends and I would marathon it late in the day.
Then in high school, same. Then, as a young adult, same. Got to ride it backwards at least once. That was... different lol. But it was fun. Also remember the rare times that both sides would be running and made sure I got the chance to ride the other side a few times. And of course the times where we'd get to race side by side! Such a treat since it was such a rare occurrence in its much later years.
As an adult now in my mid-30s, I got a chance to finally ride Twisted Colossus, and while it's a cool coaster, I still hold so much sentimental value to the original Colossus. I cried today when talking to my daughter about it. Just happened out of nowhere.. it's something she will never get to experience unfortunately since by the time she became big enough to ride coasters, it was already gone. 😔 She has ridden Twisted Colossus too, but it's just not the same experience since she has nothing to really compare it to.
Like, I do like Twisted Colossus and I welcome it to my home park. I just really get emotional when I think back to the ride that was such a big part of my childhood, adolescence, and young adult life. This month made my first time ever back on a coaster after a 12 or 13 year hiatus. I don't know if the coasters hit differently now due to me being a bit older, or if it's just me needing to get broken in with coasters again in general, but so much happened in those 12-13 years, including Colossus being removed and replaced.
I remember wanting to get down there with other fans to marathon Colossus one last time before they removed it, but unfortunately couldn't make it at the time. I lost my grandmother during that same year and was dealing with that.
While I do welcome the newer one, I still think back to this one a lot. Always thinking of ways they could have salvaged it. Should have been registered as a landmark, much like they did the old Coney Island Cyclone coaster. Gotta learn to hold to our prescious pieces of coaster history. Makes me wonder what the fate will be for Viper in the coming years. It's arguably solidified its place in the park, now that it's a 31yr old coaster. I first rode that one when it had only been in the park for 5yrs. Just hope we can preserve it; maybe update it with new paint and trains, maybe add softer overhead restraints since they are a bit hard, and whatever maintenance can be done to the tracks, to keep it around. Revolution is still going pretty strong too, although I've heard changes have been made to that one also. It was closed the last couple times I was there this month, but they finally opened it like 11 minutes before the park was scheduled to close which was pretty hilarious lol. I always make it a point to ride Viper and Revolution whenever I visit, as well as Colossus. Gold Rusher is still cool too but haven't rode it in years. But I usually always make it a point to ride the classic coasters on my visits before getting on to the newer stuff. So it's sad to see that one of our beloved got taken away from us.
Anyway, say all that to say, thanks for sharing this video. I teared up a bit watching it, and just reminiscing. I do genuinely miss this ride. 😢
Gone, but not forgotten and will always hold a special place in my heart. 🤍🤍
No
I share your sentiment. Something about the old wooden coasters is unique and fun. Kind of like being on an old bumpy mine car that broke loose.
To build on your sentiment I took my seven year old daughter to Six Flags Great America in Chicago for her very first roller coaster amusement park experience last month.. We rode everything at the 48-inch height range including their Goliath.
Truth be told she got a little averse to riding more big rides after Goliath because we went too big too fast. But it was American Eagle (a big old rickety White wooden Coaster like Colossus) that brought her confidence back and she finished the day with the fire of trying to catch every last big ride before we left finishing with Maxxforce. My daughter literally demanded to ride American Eagle over and over again as the lap bars released to exit (three times in a row with me then three plus times with mom) All the other rides were pretty much one and done for her, but that rickety old wooden coaster really got her going. Honestly going into it I only wanted to ride American Eagle for my own nostalgia thinking she would have thought it was a dumb ride. But no, she ABSOLUTELY loved American Eagle. I had genuine fun yelling and hollering with my daughter nearly 40 years younger than me as that coaster clickety clacked it's way through every turn and drop. My daughter even put her hands up for the first time. Looking back on the whole day American Eagle was the highlight memory of sheer joy.
It really got me thinking that maybe it isn't just nostalgia with the big wooden coasters. Colossus was my entry to big coasters. Colossus was the ride I remember when I was 10 my grandma, running with my cousins and I from the front of the park to the back to try and catch one more ride before the park closed in a few minutes. (We made it in line just as they roped it off!) Grandma became a legend to us that day and we always remembered that time grandma high blood pressure and all ran (woddled) all that way to catch a big ride with her grandkids. We went home with the biggest smile thanks to Colossus being there to give us a big ride grandma could handle.
They big wooden coasters are legit fun. Hopefully the parks that still have them realize that not every ride needs to pull G's like a fighter jet. The bumpy old Wooden coasters feel like they are going to rattle themselves apart and maybe that's part of the charm and fear they give. I can't think of other rides that can create those kind of memories across the age ranges.
Right along with you on that!!! "'FOREVER!!!'" "COLUSSUS!!!", EVEN tho gone!!!
I don't like roller coasters but I do like Colossus. The last time I went on Colossus there was no line so I kept going multiple times. I legitimately enjoyed it. To a certain extent I can feel your sadness. I did not know that they got rid of it. Hearing that makes me a bit sad. Cheers.
I love your story of how Colossus was a very significant part of your youth. It wa that way for me too. I a bit older than you but I remember when Colossus was being built. Revolution was the big cheese roller coaster of the park at that time. I rode that beast when I was 10 years old in 1977. Colossus was being built at that time. They had a model on display and when it was finally completed it was all over local media. I wanted to ride it but was kinda scared to after the accident that happened after Christmas in 1978. I didn’t get to rid it until 1980 when I was 13. I remember how massive it was when you saw it from the parking lot! I will say that I had the same exact reaction on both classic Colossus and Twisted Colossus the first time. It was a “Holy *hit! WTF! Moment. If a coaster can do that to someone twice that is one special epic badass roller coaster. Anyway after that first time I was hooked. We had season passes so could go year round. In the summer season the park was opened until 1:00am back in the 80s. At night was beyond epic! The crowds would thin and you could jump right back on over and over again. I would convince my friends to ride, especially the ones who were afraid! There was one friend that I could not convince no matter what. She just couldn’t get over what happened in 1978 when that woman fell. She said it gave her a bad feeling even though there were certain circumstances why the accident happened. But she still refused. I used to her frustrasted with her. “So what? Are you just going to stand out here like a dumb f**k while the rest of us or going to ride and have fun? What’s the matter with you?” I gave her such a hard time back then but believe it or not we are still very close friends! I rode Colossus thru the 80s from my early teens to young adulthood. I went into roller coast hiatus during the 90s. But returned in the early 2000s. All that time off must’ve made me soft because roller coaters started making me anxious and not in a good way. I rode Goliath and wished I didn’t, Batman was cool and Riddler’s Revenge was terrifying. I couldn’t wait to get off that ride! Viper I remember going on it but I don’t remember the experience and sadly I hardly remember Colossus. But I do remember a certain familiarity and comfort that I appreciated but my friends at the time did not. They were there for X which was new at the time. Hard to believe it’s been there for over 20 years now. Colossus was still my favorite. If anyone asked me what my favorite roller coaster at SFMM was I always said Colossus! I would have loved to see Colossus get a complete restoration back to its majestic iconic glory. Or even if Colossus never ran again it could have been preserved and turned into a sort of museum attraction. But I would rather see it with the new RMC makeover than to see it demolished. There have been so many classic majestic iconic wooden roller coasters demolished as if they never existed over the decades it’s almost tragic. Even the woody that inspired the design and creation of Colossus is gone forever.
Remarkable structure, it seemed so massive when I was a kid then to see Viper appear nearby and seemingly dwarf it. I couldn't take my eyes off of it when driving by.
That last sequence of airtime hills was some of the most aggressive airtime I ever experienced in my life. Man do I miss it.

Thanks for posting this. This was a beloved roller coaster of my youth. And even though the taller steel coasters started appearing over the years Classic Colossus reminded the iconic figure of the park. It was a sight to behold when you saw it from the freeway. As far as I am concerned it still is even after it’s transformation. I am glad there are people that appreciate Colossus for what it was and what it represents.
Yep. This was a very solid wooden coaster, even with its pedestrian layout. It wasn't rough at all, and had some good airtime at parts. And yes, you could easily see the Magic Mountain lineup from the freeway, with Viper and X2 on the left, with Tatsu and Revolution at the middle, while Riddler is there at the back, and Goliath, Twisted Colossus, and Scream are at the far eastern end. You can see all of those coasters from the 5 freeway, similar to how you can see Xcelerator, Silver Bullet, and Supreme Scream from the 91 freeeway, which is different than Disbeyland, as you can't even see It's a Small World from the freeway, despite it being the closest ride to the 5.
At 3:14, I like how he says, “Oooooooooo welcome back Colossus riders, how was the riiiiiiide?”
This ride terrified me as a kid ! I was to afraid to ride it every trip to Magic Mountain and I dreaded the words from my sisters and friends "Lets go ride the Colossus." All I could think of is me standing at the ride exit holding everyone's stuff while they ride. Once I got over my fear of roller coasters this ride was a breeze compared to the others. Going to miss it when it goes.... end of a era : (
Going here in a few months! Today was great too I got a T-shirt from Sagan Lockhart and Tyler the creator just performed! Concert is badass!
the bass on each drop makes it so funny
My all-time fav coaster. I rode it 35 times on its last regular day of operation in Aug 2014, and 100+ times total. It was reminiscent of the old Cyclone Racer coaster at the Long Beach Pike (but much safer)

Omg this was the “scariest” ride EVER when I was really little lol.
My dad would take me to magic mountain maybe once a year, I’d go with friends other times, but I remember probably the first couple years of riding this coaster I’d be so scared my eyes were closed the whole time 😂
The old classic Clickety-clack of classic wooden coasters I miss It New Ones aren’t the same:(
This is one of the landmarks of this amusement part!
Favorite coaster ride back in the 80s. The oldest, but the first drop made it the better than the "curvy" ones.
Losing such a classic is so heartbreaking. Unfortunately I never got the opportunity to ride it, I wish I did though. I just hope Six Flags doesn't do anything stupid with the space. Maybe RMC it?
You got your wish.
I used to be a fan of these RMC retreads of coasters, especially ones that have gone into the ground due to lack of maintenance. The problem is now, however, that Six Flags is doing it to ALL their classic wood coasters. I mean, Colossus is a piece of modern history. It's featured all over the place when there's a roller coaster in the movies, like in National Lampoon's Vacation, where Magic Mountain doubled as Wally World. So why screw that up?
They're doing it to woodies, where there too many problems, or is rough and nobody likes it
FigmentsFan I've dubbed it simply the "Six Flags Mentality." Let the ride go to hell and last 1/4 as long as it otherwise would had we maintained it, and then we'll replace it when it's unpleasant and nobody rides it. It's sick. If they would have taken care of this ride and gotten rid of those mid trim brakes, it would have been better. RIP Colossus and we can't forget the ORIGINAL Texas Giant. I haven't ridden either of them but I wish I had gotten the chance.
+yugioh guy colossus had minor problems and it was smooth. i loved it. and so did a lot of people i know.

In the early 1980s I was about fourteen years old when I rode this. I was s light shade of green when I got off of it. Lol it was more rough and loud than scary.
In Houston TX there was a theme park called Astroworld that opened in the 60s and closed in 2005. Back in the late 70s/early 80s, they had this indoor planetarium-like theater where you would lie on the floor and watch various POV movies on the ceiling (roller coasters, driving cars, helicopters flying over mountains, etc.), and one of them looked exactly like this ride, and it was running the other train at the same time. I sure wish I could find that video!!!
There was an episode of Wild and Crazy Kids where the boys and girls gave to keep mugs of the water from spilling while on this ride. Omar Gooding, one the three hosts of this iconic show conquered his fear at the end of that episode.
It may not seem like much by today's standards, but I loved this coaster. I enjoy the updated version, but the nostalgia hits hard as I watch this.
One of my favorite rides Magic Mountain ever had next to the original Revolution rollercoaster!
I went on this ride in 1996 and instantly recognised this as the roller coaster from the TV show Step by Step. Also from National Lampoons Vacation.
As great as Twisted Colossus looks, I always dreamed of riding the original Colossus when I was younger. There's a certain charm to wooden coasters that can't be replaced but unfortunately the greatest wooden coasters are either disappearing or getting renovated all over.
Hurricoaster no the worst wooden coasters are getting RMCed
I'm sad that they changed it... but at least they didn't take it down!
+Leo Newt they did. They removed the entire structure and built this on the original plot of land
I mean I'm glad they didn't destroy the whole thing and put a completely different ride up, the new one is similar in a few ways ( the first left turn and the lift hill).
Man you gotta go to Cedar Point man, best coasters east of the Mississippi river, maybe even the whole country.
I never forgot that coaster and it will be my first one it sucks they r gonna close down that ride but I'll still remember in my head
Brings back memories, went in 2013 and I remember the line being slow as molasses
Lol every time I go on this ride, my dad is next to me going "I can hear the termites!!!" Lol. He loves heights but not wooden rides.
This looked painfully slow in certain areas. I rode this about 2 months ago as Twisted Colossus and absolutely loved it. This and Apocalypse are my favorites in that park.
The beast's lift Hil looks fast compared to This I have a feeling that it's that way to the other car to catch up to Duel sometimes
Now I understand how it was my favorite ride. It was my first ever ride on a roller coaster. It started my rider career 😄.
I remember riding this in 1998, it was awesome

Such a fun roller coaster sad that they tore it down. It was funny this was my first roller coaster at six flags and they only had the dackwards going one open. Scared the crap out of me at first but after that I loved it.
Wow for a wooden coaster, that’s a fast chain. AWESOME!!!
The thing about RMC, is that it takes the charm out of the coaster. For example, they are doing the same thing to Cyclone at Six Flags new england, and don't tell me they're not, because the RMC tracks are already on site. But anyway, for my Cyclone at SFNE was like this beast. It was rough, it was fast, and there was plenty of airtime. I just feel like RMC isn't going to be the same.
Shut yo bitch ass up. Cyclone was rough as hell, and now it's gonna be awesome. It's giving new life to these rides.
First of all, no need to be rude. Second, if you read my comment, I acknowledged the fact that it was rough. That's what was so great about it. It was, "a rollercoaster ride..." if you can't handle it, that's not my problem.
Trust me once you get your first ride on any rmc, you'd wish all wooden coasters would be like it. They are fast smoth, filled woth insane airtime and inversions you will like it
Knexpert_of_Kansas It's not that I'm not gonna like it...it's just, I grew up riding the Cyclone and it's in my top 5 list of all time favorite rides. I understand things need to change but I'm gonna miss it.
***** This is correct and I'm getting a little sad these days the way people are. Cyclone was incredibly unique in addition to the charm. That first drop and turn maneuver? The deliberate pacing? Even in its re-profiled form there was nothing else like it. It was a twisted work of art, genuinely beautiful to even look at. Now everything is about being as fast and chaotic as possible with no chance to even breathe. I'm not gonna sit here and say I won't have fun with Wicked Cyclone when I ride it, but I know the appeal will ware off with it. Ejecting me out of my seat and turning me upside down every three seconds isn't why I love coasters so much, and it definitely isn't why Cyclone fascinated me. Packing that much ride into that little space was brilliant, and before the trims murdered the end of the ride, the last couple hairpin turns into the station were the most thrilling end to an already crazy unique coaster I can think of. Now the ride will consist of a long steep drop... because that hasn't been done before (as close as across the park under the name Bizarro), and hanging me upside down for an extended moment. As smoothly as possible, mind you. Now rollercoasters are about feeling like you're flying around on a soft couch instead of OUT OF CONTROL. I sound like an old man to some I'm sure (I'm not, I'm 29), but that's just not special to me.
Wooden roller coasters are fun, you are allowed to scream at the top of your lungs to annoy your sister. Good times.
Always liked this racing woodie the best...Went on it the year it opened ('78 or '79)...Of course, Goliath wasn't intertwined with it back then...

Many fond memories of this coaster from my teenage years in the 80s
Can't wait for it to reopen
1:17 sounds like baldis basics when you find 7 notebooks XD
LMAO true!
Kind of funny that the lift was much faster than it is today on the rmc...
rct800 FACTS!!!
Yeah... that’s kinda the point. The chain lift on one side slows down while the other speeds up so if there’s a second train trying to catch up, it can so it can have the chance to duel. I mean it’s a dueling coaster after all. Cmon GP
I rode this at my 8th grade grad nite and honestly, I felt a sense of accomplishment (it was on my bucket list anyway)

I liked this Colossus Roller Coaster better than the new Twisted Version they created.
An oldie but goodie!
I never imagined they'd retire the coaster. It was special
I think the may be and most basic of the coasters here and is still the best even in it's simplicity.
Colossus is getting long in the tooth. I feel old. They opened it 2 weeks after I visited Magic Mountain for my 9th grade graduation in 1978. I still remember visiting Magic Mountain in 1977 and there was a model of Colossus near the entrance. They had a contest on what the new coaster should be called. There were 3 or 4 choices available. The only two I can remember are Star Streak (maybe Star Racer) and Colossus. I had no idea what a Colossus was. I remember voting for Star Streak(Star Racer).
This one *LOOKED* fun....
Such a classic wooden beast a true beauty
I will never get to ride it..... Since i was a child in the 80's an saw i in movies and tv shows, i dreamed to ride it. It was my iconic roller coaster. I thought some day it would happen. It will keep as a dream.
That's a bummer. Colossus was a one of a kind experience
Be glad you never rode it. I rode it right before it closed and ended up with whiplash for a couple of days. Wasn't fun.
Yyyyyyy did colossus have to close 😩😩😩😩😩😩😩😫😫😢😢😞😔
abbyo martinez so they can make it where it doesn’t suck
Chris it never did ya gp
abbyo martinez it didn’t, at least not for forever. If you don’t know, it got upgraded
David Baines but it is technically a new coaster, for the layout is different and so is the manufacturer.
I will tell the truth
watch #ColossusMagicMountainFire And you'll know it
Tyler brought me here
I love this ride I went on it 3x in a row
The good ol days. You wait 2 hours in line for a 3 min ride. It was fun back then but now that I'm older it doesn't make sense to me.
The sound of the lift hill is what I miss about the old collosus
and said "ayoo! can we get a pic" i said "no."
I forgot how tame the original colossus was. Wow it’s crazy now. Much improved
The ORIGINAL was a far more intense and exciting ride than this version was. By 2014, the ride had received a lot of modifications that were not for the better such as the brake run half way through the layout that was originally a double down. This created some serious pacing issues for the remainder of the ride. Twisted Colossus is probably still the most intense version, but Colossus in its earlier years was a much better coaster. You can find some old videos from the 80s here on UA-cam and see how much faster it went.
rest in peace this awesome game.. 😂😣😓😫😔😟😢😭 I ride it back in 2010
This roller coaster caught fire.
I got to ride this before it closed. 100% worth it
Back in the 1980's. You were given a choice which ride you wanted. They had the regular one and then they had the ride traveling backwards on the second track.
National Lampoons vacation brought me here lol
Chris Sweeten, like Bendyournoodle said, Colossus is still open. Who said that they closed it down? You might have been thinking about Psyclone.
By the way, I would have clicked "reply" to reply to your comment, but UA-cam (or Google) removed it.
rip colosos
One of my all time favourites
This ride is bumpy but awesome can't wait too ride it again
RIP Colossus; a legit wooden dueling coaster
I enjoyed riding this when it was still operating!!
They still race them together, very fun. but I'm usually on the losing train.
I can't believe they closed down this ride.
Farewell colossus ! I will always love this ride and am so Sad they are taking it down
not completely! they are RMC hybrid-ing this coaster as twisted colossus! go to the website for more info
The king of Coasters 36-year reign ends August 16th.
last time i went here i saw some dude get harassed by like 12 people trying to buy a churro
Seeing all these people reminiscing over this ride makes me wonder what these people think of the upgrade, because 4 years ago it seems people thought it was closed for good but now that’s obviously not the case. I mean how could you hate a good upgrade that genuinely improved on the ride? I mean if you hate it because it didn’t improve on the ride that’s fine but if you are hating just because it’s upgraded I just don’t understand that.
If a ride isn’t upgraded at all and just rethemed, I can understand why you would be mad because there was no reason to retheme it but if a ride is upgraded because it was too rough or needed an upgrade, I just don’t understand getting mad at that
I will share a story that might explain it. Since if you asked me a month ago about colossus being modernized I would have said yeah makes sense even though I had very strong childhood memories of colossus from over 40 years ago.
I just went last month with my 7 year old daughter for her first big roller coaster experience to Six Flags Great America.. We rode everything in the 48-inch range including Goliath and Maxxforce.
Truth be told American Eagle (old woodie like Colossus) was only on my list to ride with my daughter for my own personal nostalgia because Colossus was what got me into roller coasters nearly 40 years ago. We almost didn't even ride America Eagle because I thought my daughter would have found it dumb.
After Goliath my daughter kind of slowed down on wanting to ride anything big. Since i think Goliath was a bit much and unenjoyable to her. She kept saying she's ok with going on the kiddo rides with her 2 year old sister. So out of desperation not trying to hype it up I was like lets try the bumpy old wooden coaster American Eagle.
To my surprise we literally rode American Eagle 3 times straight twice. My daughter would be begging to ride it again as the lap bars released. American Eagle saved the day. I was thoroughly enjoying it too.
From that point she was back onto wanting to ride all the rides and we finished with Joker Twice, and Maxxforce.
I was honestly shocked that the big old wooden American Eagle was the highlight of our day with me the old 45 year old Dad and 7 year old daughter hooting and hollering as that coaster clickety clacked threatening to shake itself apart. My super cautious daughter even put her hands up!
Part of me saw the logic of going RMC with the old wooden coasters, but then seeing my 7 year old daughter gravitate on her own to that big old wooden coaster I totally take back that they should ever mess with them. I am now actually sad that Colossus is gone and not for my own memory, but for little ones like my daughter who would have found it a blast to ride with her old Dad and Mom in the future or even her own kids one day for years to come. The old woodies have a certain feeling of danger to them threatening to fall apart that doesn't require fighter jet like G forces and that makes them cool. You have time to look over at the person next to you and hype each other up. It seems like all ages have fun on the old Woodies and that is something cool to share together
