poor maggie! if I understood correctly, she owed less than 400 pounds (and those pieces were only worth gold weight, so definitely worth more sentimentally) - makes sense and was so nice of James to write that off.

I don't understand, why not just sell the tanzanite stones rather than get a loan of 5k, and then if you can't pay it back you will loss the whole 30k (retail value).

Nah, he probably bought the jewelry legally from earnings from jewelry he stole. It's like money laundering, so it will not on their list of stolen items.

That's just the impression they gave you purposely to make the show more interesting. But you did make me laugh. It's like a man saying he's got a gut feeling he's not getting laid when his wife climbs into bed and says she's got a headache. They aren't going to buy or sell stolen items from a known criminal on camera.

this was filmed years ago, in about 10 more years those dollar notes will be worth 20K when all the cash is digital and people get it into collecting cash notes from holidays in other countries.

I'm a bit at a loss as to how they make money on a loan , if they loan ?? say $10.000 - then the customer pays back on time , how do they make money ? 've never pawned anything so I don;t know .
The loan is extended with interest. The business likes to find a valuable item in which they can offer a sizeable loan with more interest over time. After all a $50,000 loan at 10% over a year end due is $50,000 plus $5000 in interest. That means the customer has to come up with $55,000 to repay the pawn shop in order to get their valuables back. Tough to do if the jewelry owner was near bankruptcy and desperately needed cash flow. The only item the borrower had of worth was Grandma’s diamonds. I hope that helps explain the process. 🇨🇦 Stay safe and healthy.
have heard James state interest rate is 3.9% or there abouts … paid to Prestige monthly for say 7 month contract I think … so Prestige part with some cash but hold valuable item plus they get paid monthly interest … borrower then has option to repay entire loan at end of agreed contract (say 7 months) or else Prestige will sell their valuable item to recover the cash they initially loaned on the valuable item … so far as I can see this is how it might work, but never been to Pawn Shop myself

It’s sick that a glorified thief goes on about being a cat burglar.
I bet you the hurt and memories of the day he’d broken in and stolen someone’s family heirlooms and valuables still torments them even now.
Wouldn’t it be dealing in the proceeds of crime knowing that it is more than likely stolen? Doesn’t matter when, doesn’t matter if you did jail time, these items don’t belong to your family.
I don’t like seeing people making money on others suffering and that’s exactly what this is. Why wouldn’t the police have seized all the jewellery back in the day, he was convicted, wonder where they hid it?
The PAWN store should have called the police to come in to return those items to the real owner. It is ok as long as the man is a Caucasian man
I would assume, and because they stated in the show, that they were thoroughly checked out. James does not mess with the business. He’s an intelligent man.
As far as assumptions go, I believe you just made a lot of assumptions.
I assure you that his case was investigated thoroughly by the detectives, hence the time served.
A thing like that as small as it is to most and it was a small amount, but not in what they meant can change her life from then on. She leaves thinking thats the best thing thats happened to me in a very long time, maybe this is a turning point and suddenly positive stuff starts happening. Positivity breeds positivity.
