Have a stock SF2 Championship Edition Arcade 1UP cab. My buttons are crapping out on the player 1 side so I ordered a Sanwa stick and Sanwa buttons. Still waiting on the buttons in the mail. But I put in the stick at the time of this comment. I reused the 1UP faceplate and put it on the Sanwa stick per the video. My stick came with a 5 point connector with open wire ends, but I didn’t need to order the wiring harness separately I was able to re-use the wiring harness on the stock stick. Play tested it and everything seems to be working fine and the Sanwa stick is much more responsive. Can’t wait to get the buttons.
Thanks for the video, mate! Because of your nice tutorial, I've successfully installed a sanwa joystick in my Arcade 1up. Oh, how better it plays! Cheers!
Thank you for this video! This video helped me replace my 1Up Galaga joystick. The sanwa is so much better. The DIY Retro Arcade cable was the perfect solution. I appreciate your video, provided me with the guidance I needed! Great stuff!
Nice video bro... I needed i of on the screws that hold the joystick to the Arcade1Up panel... I purchased a blank panel from someone for my final fight... it’s just the panel and I’m replacing all the buttons and when I got to the joysticks, I realized I needed the screws... as I head to Home Depot, the link you provided gives me the size... I’m very happy I stumbled across this video as I’ll be able to complete my panel and then move to the pi portion... thanks a bunch :)
So I did this upgrade to my A1U Ms Pacman cocktail cabinet and it was very straight forward; took under an hour to replace both joysticks. It's funny to see how much the installed joysticks resembled toys as opposed to the Sanwa's that are built very solid. While it's a subtle difference in gameplay, I am glad to have done it for the longevity of the cabinet. The hardest part was my needing to also take off the top of the cabinet since I didn't have a screwdriver small enough to remove the control decks without doing so. Getting the plexiglass back on without trapping any dust / pet hair has been challenging. I also noticed (I think like you) that the player 1 side used a ton more glue than player 2, but was able to get the old joysticks off with a little extra force using a tool in my iFixit toolkit. Thanks for the idea, and detailed instructions on how to get this done.
Wow! Great video UC. That’s the way to do a tutorial. Step by step. A lot of UA-camrs will skip steps assuming you already know what to do. I ordered all of these parts last week when you did the Ms. Pac-Man review and should be getting everything this week. Never thought about using the existing mounting plate, great idea. I’ll be adding these to my BurgerTime and Super Pac-Man cab. Thanks again for the informative video.
Thanks for the tutorial! This should come in handy for when I mod my XvSF cabinet once I get it. I got the buttons I need, but held off on getting new joysticks until I was certain on how to swap them. I want it to be a simple mod with no cutting, drilling, or soldering required while keeping everything looking stock.
What buttons did you use. Did you have to rig the connectors. Or was is plug and play. One more question what was the harness numbering for the xmen vs street fighter. Link
@@philthyphilsf I used HAPP buttons with Sanwa sticks. For the buttons, I used a different set of wires that fit to them as the stock wires won't fit to the connectors.
@@philthyphilsf No. HAPP buttons fit just fine. You'll probably have to do a little drilling if you want to use Sanwa buttons. I wanted my mod to be as simple as possible. No drilling, cutting, or soldering required.

This was the answer to my problem. Newbie to the aftermarket joystick upgrade..... I thought I would see tension springs somewhere in that process??? Everyone says get upgraded tension springs, did i miss them? Where do the springs go?
ua-cam.com/video/znURbTZHFwA/v-deo.html This is a short video showing how to replace the tension spring on a Sanwa joystick. It's a fairly simple mod to do. I believe a 4lb spring should be sufficient as I've heard those are generally what an actual arcade cabinet would have, but you can use a different one if you prefer. All you're really doing by changing the spring is adjusting how loose, or tight the stick will feel when you move it. Heavier springs will give the joystick a tighter feel, and lighter springs will make it looser.
I love the 6lb tension springs. Added to my burger time and space invaders and it’s a world of difference in my opinion. Also going to add them to my NBA jam based on UC’s recommendations. In the end I guess it’s all preference but the higher tension always improves my experience.

Maybe it's just me, but I feel like this is way more convoluted than just drilling 4, small holes to accept the Sanwa plate as-is (which I've done, and it's pretty darn easy). I feel like taking this many components apart and having to re-assemble them is adding complexity and chance for error.
@@robtaylor8816 except when you can’t use the old plate. When I upgraded my Galaga to a 4 way joystick I found that the old plate would not work with it, the hole patterns to connect the plate to the joystick were not the same. So I will need to use the Sanwa plate and drill some holes to attach it to the control panel.
Ok i thought I heard that rumor somewhere and researched it myself. It was your video I heard it on. Yea man who makes these decisions ?!? At the very least re release the galaga cabinet put it galaga 88 on there and dragon spirit. Make it a HSN version.

My arcade1up pacman 2in1 joystic is not working. I bought the wires from diy arcade but the wires dont look right and it doesn't work either. The arcade1up has 4 wires each clip ffg or up and down. The diy cable has 2 in one clip and 3 in the other. Your video looked easy but it still not working. I noticed the sound clip attached to the board was loose. Maybe the joystick female has bad soldering or do you think the pcb went bad. I swear the pacman 2in1 is creepily built.
Sounds like you have a first gen board and so you need the first gen wiring harness. Try getting the other harness from diyarcade for first wave arcade1up. And yes that pac cab is built poorly I agree
Great video. I do have a question. What made you change the joystick? The reason I'm asking is that my issue on my space invaders game when I move the joystick left or right the shooter hesitates to move so I'm not sure if the issue is the joystick.
My joystick worked fine, it's just that the joysticks 1up uses (ESPECIALLY in their first gen cabs) aren't very good, so I wanted something higher quality. For the cost, this is imo the best upgrade you can make
Ok, I tried this with Pacman and only got left/right.. Any buying tips or information on a Pacman harness with Santa stick? By the way I tried contacting diyretroarcade and didn't get an answer
Things to check: Restrictor gate clipped in? All 4 actuators placed correctly? Is your stick centered perfectly to the hold in the control panel? Check the wires to make sure each individual wire is connected/not bent
I am needing to replace the joy sticks on my wave 1 Street fighter cabinet, as they are becoming somewhat non responsive. Will these work for this cabinet? Also will the wiring adaptor work for the SF2 cabinet? Thank you
When you buy the adaptor with that link, theres an option to select wave 1. The sticks will fit in street fighter but I don't think you can reuse the existing mounting plate so you will need to drill new pilot holes to mount the new plate
Hey there. You have linked a 2lb tension spring but I didnt see you use that in the video. Why do you have that linked in the description? Will i need that in the instillation process? Thanks!
Am I missing something or did you completely skip the part where you swap the base plate? Idk how to remove this sanwa base plate without stripping the screws.
@@UnqualifiedCritics ok I have a yellow cabinet so is that wave 1? Is that the problem I'm having? Cause my wires don't have blue and orange and this joystick wire harness does my old one does not
Great question and I don't know since mine have always been climate controled. Assuming your garage isn't climate controlled/dehumidified, expect breakdown of the mdf eventually. And worst case, there is enough moisture to damage the electronics altho I dont think that's likely

Thanks for video. My joystick moves and clicks but ms Pac-Man or spaceship doesn’t move. It occasionally “sticks”. Do you have any ideas on how I can fix this?
Sounds like the actuator is engaging if it clicks but may not be wired to the pcb. Check your wires and make sure all wires from your stick to pcb are fully connected on both ends
Yes, I just purchased M4x30mm screws at Lowes for my Vigolix build. They have the 10mm there. Do not get them from Home Depot though, the M4's they have are stainless steel and cost around $0.80 a piece. I got a pack of zinc ones at Lowes for around $2 a pack of 10.
Is that 2lb tension spring actually necessary for replacing the joystick? I bought a full complete sanwa stick and I'm genuinely confused as to why I would need that spring.
I upgraded my Galaga, pacman, & Rampage cabs with Game X indestructible joy sticks, which after a slight contact arm adjustments, work great! I recently got the MS. What's your high score on MS. Pacman? Only had my cab a month now.
@@briandhoward6137 Hint, adjust the contact arms with needle nose plyers. There are 4. All need adjustment for optimal control. After adjustment, you should have no problem. I score over 100,000 on pack man with these indestructible joysticks. Doesn't take long to adjust & very easy.

Question do you know where I could buy the harness. My Sanwa joystick arrived but Diyretroarcade is out of stock and they seem to be the only one carrying those. Your help is appreciated.
They're the only ones I've found carding it. You could create your own from a 5 pin wire, you just need the right plastic ends to mount into to match the ones from diyarcade
I'm guessing the Sanwa joystick is more responsive to having a replacement tension spring installed with it. I put a 4lb spring on the default joystick for my Ms. Pac-Man arcade 1up cabinet, and less than 24 hours later, moving the joystick up wouldn't work...only left, right, and down...
@@UnqualifiedCritics Hmmm...not sure. I put the default 1lb spring back on the default joystick and it moves in all 4 directions again. Attempting to install a Sanwa on my Ms. Pac-Man cabinet. Arcade 1up must have used an entire bottle of glue to seal the factory joystick to the control deck. My box cutter blade can't get under the joystick plate at all. And I don't have a hair dryer to heat the glue. Any suggestions?
@@coreyalexander9059 if it happens again try a heat gun or blowdryer to soften the glue a bit. It's dumb the amount of glue they use when the screws work fine to secure

How do I know what wave my arcade machine is? I have the pacman plus cabinet with 8 games including Galaga and digg dug. Just got it this week, does anyone know which wave that is?
That's gen 4 but the key thing is gen 1 (yellow pac man, street fighter, etc), gen 2 (mortal kombat, etc.) and then everything newer. There was a big quality improvement after gen 2
I just did the Sanwa stick swap on my QVC Pac-Man Plus cab. It required the (double 4pin/wave 3) 12inch cable option. The mounting plate swapped over perfect too. Maybe it's just me, but I feel like this is way more convoluted than just drilling 4, small holes to accept the Sanwa plate as-is (which I've done, and it's pretty darn easy). I feel like taking this many components apart and having to re-assemble them is adding complexity and chance for error.
This is harder for most people as it requires the holes to be drilled and the joystick to be dead-center. Swapping the plate is super easy.
👍😁 ACTUALLY “IF” they Re-release a GALAGA Cab they should ADD Stereo Speakers 🔊 and add in Two Completely Different Games - But Keep it 80s SPACE GAMES -
Like - ( JUNO FIRST)
If anyone grew UP ⬆️ Back in the 80s AS A KID - We DO NOT REMEMBER GALAGA- ??
WE REMEMBER ARCADE ( JUNO FIRST)
It Has THEE MOST ICONIC 1980s ARCADE SOUNDS “”EVER””
Sounds SOOOOOO BADASSSSSS and I remember every time my parents brought me to a Arcade
JUNO FIRST- WAS IMMEDIATELY HEARD VERY INSANELY LOUD AWESOME SPACE SOUNDS AND GAME PLAY 👍👍
Another 80s SPACE GAME CALLED - “PLEIADS”
If They combined a Space Cab all together with-
COLOR ASTROIDS
GALAGA, GALAGA 88, DRAGON SPIRIT
JUNO FIRST & PLEIADS
WOULD BE THEE ULTIMATE 80s SPACE CAB!
For the cost, this is imo the best upgrade you can make
how does one tell which position is up on the sanwa stick? Or how did you know that the one your marked as down was the down position?
Trial and error but match my orientation; pretty sure they're all the same
How’s this joystick for fighting games ? The ones I have sucks for fighting games like street fighter
Great for fighting games. You may want an octagonal or round gate to go with it
Does this upgraded joystick also swivel from the shaft? I hate that from my original joystick.
Yeah but can be fixed with a dab of loctite
Ok, I tried this with Pacman and only got left/right.. Any buying tips or information on a Pacman harness with Santa stick? By the way I tried contacting diyretroarcade and didn't get an answer
Things to check:
Restrictor gate clipped in?
All 4 actuators placed correctly?
Is your stick centered perfectly to the hold in the control panel?
Check the wires to make sure each individual wire is connected/not bent
This work on the partycade? The same Sanwa ire harness?
Thanks!
Hey there - you can reuse the existing tension spring (.9lb) I just prefer 2 lb. Strictly a personal preference so no its not required
Thanks for the reply.
Am I missing something or did you completely skip the part where you swap the base plate? Idk how to remove this sanwa base plate without stripping the screws.
You can reuse the sanwa base plate, the preexisting drill holes should line up
What if wire harness like u have don't come with plugs to go back on the row of plugs originally that you unplug before taking off the joystick?
Then you'll have to crimp them yourself but if you order the harness I linked to, it comes with a plug attached
@@UnqualifiedCritics ok I have a yellow cabinet so is that wave 1? Is that the problem I'm having? Cause my wires don't have blue and orange and this joystick wire harness does my old one does not
@@UnqualifiedCritics I went to that link and they don't ship to Iowa and I don't know why?
Awesome video, you make it look so easy. Do you recommend doing the sane for fighting games? If so which ones?
extra recommended for fighting games, any of them. Some titles used other brand's sticks but Sanwa are easy to install in A1ups + high quality
@@UnqualifiedCritics Let me ask you, I live in FLORIDA how do you think these machines will handle the garage?
Great question and I don't know since mine have always been climate controled. Assuming your garage isn't climate controlled/dehumidified, expect breakdown of the mdf eventually. And worst case, there is enough moisture to damage the electronics altho I dont think that's likely
@@UnqualifiedCritics I hear ya, room in my spare room is getting tight. Had to for real compromise with the wife to get the NBA JAM. Now we got Killer Instinct. Are you kidding me, wonder what I need to do to let her let me have that one. Ha. Forget about it if they come out with a Simpson's.
Thanks!
Did you release?
Can you purchase the M4x10mm Screws and Nuts from Lowes/Home Depot?
yeah I'm sure you can but you'll have to check, I ordered from that arcade supplier
No its not required. Sanwa jlfs have a.9 lb screen, I just prefer 2lb of resistance
@@UnqualifiedCritics Ok, thanks for the quick response!
I upgraded my Galaga, pacman, & Rampage cabs with Game X indestructible joy sticks, which after a slight contact arm adjustments, work great! I recently got the MS. Pacman cab & found I really like it's joystick. Seems better than 1st gen. Cabs. My hi score is over 72000 currently. I'm curious, do you feel replacement improved your game performance? What's your high score on MS. Pacman? Only had my cab a month now.
I just did this and fallowed the links for parts, this stick is worse then the stock one by far. Do not change the stick you will regret it
@@briandhoward6137 Hint, adjust the contact arms with needle nose plyers. There are 4. All need adjustment for optimal control. After adjustment, you should have no problem. I score over 100,000 on pack man with these indestructible joysticks. Doesn't take long to adjust & very easy.
@@festalongreyhawkshorts4sho645 thank you I will try this
@@briandhoward6137 very welcome my friend! They suck from the factory. Please let me know how you make out. Be gentle. Steel arms, but bend them so they rest up against joystick post. Good luck👍👍
@@briandhoward6137 you can find videos & watch how also
Ordered everything but the wire harness. Just wondering will they have more in stock sooner than later.
Yeah they've been out for a while. Hopefully they get it together
@@UnqualifiedCritics Thank you for a speedy reply. Love the videos and happy new year.
Same to you!
@@UnqualifiedCritics this is bs you cant just make the harness there are jumpers that have to be considered
How do I know which wave Ms pacman I have ?
look at the back on the angled panel behind the screen, I believe that has the model number
wire harness out of stock, do you know where i can get it else where??
I don't, that was the only place I found that stocks them. Getting real tired of these arcade vendors running their business like a shanty
Do you know what wiring hire ness to use for the marvel vs capcom cabinet?
Yeah it's the wave 3 harness a d 12" should work fine.
@@UnqualifiedCritics thanks man. I emailed diy retro and you are right.
Where did you get this updated controal panel for the Ms. Pacman machine?
It's the standard panel for the cocktail Ms Pac
AH!! OK. It's for the cocktail cabinet. Though there was an updated on for the arcade cabinet.
My guess is you knocked a wire loose when you opened it up. Double check the actuators are all connected to the sticks pcb
@@UnqualifiedCritics Hmmm...not sure. I put the default 1lb spring back on the default joystick and it moves in all 4 directions again. The default joystick just can't keep up when navigating Ms. Pac-Man through tight corners, especially in Fast mode. I'm planning on installing a Sanwa (with a 6lb tension spring), and keeping the default joystick as a backup if all else fails...
Nevermind. All it took was a hammer and 3 gentle whacks on the display side of the control deck, and the joystick plate popped off with no problem.
@@coreyalexander9059 if it happens again try a heat gun or blowdryer to soften the glue a bit. It's dumb the amount of glue they use when the screws work fine to secure
Any idea what the spring is for and where I place it?
goes inside the white plastic cab and around the joystick rod. its purpose is so when you push the stick in a direction, there's a bit of resistance
Question? Would this work on the ms pacman counter cade? Thank you.
I'm sure it would but I don't have a countercade to test
@@UnqualifiedCritics thanks again.
Are you a part of any of the Facebook groups?
Tried this on my Street Fighter 2 cab, and unfortunately the Sanwa stick didn't fit on the stock mounting plate. Had to use the Sanwa plate and drill new holes. WEAK!
Damn they must’ve updated the plate after wave one then
How do I tell if I have wave 1 or wave 2? I have a pac man 40th
That's wave 3 or higher
@@UnqualifiedCritics thank you and thank you for the video
How do I know what wave my arcade machine is? I have the pacman plus cabinet with 8 games including Galaga and digg dug. Just got it this week, does anyone know which wave that is?
That's gen 4 but the key thing is gen 1 (yellow pac man, street fighter, etc), gen 2 (mortal kombat, etc.) and then everything newer. There was a big quality improvement after gen 2
@@UnqualifiedCritics thanks bro!! Appreciate the reply
I just did the Sanwa stick swap on my QVC Pac-Man Plus cab. It required the (double 4pin/wave 3) 12inch cable option. The mounting plate swapped over perfect too. I used the screws from the A1Up stick to mount the stock plate on the Sanwa. Excellent upgrade.
You prob figured this out by now but just a heads up.
@@TboneTenEighties thanks bro, im going to get it now and do the swap!
@@jasonlo8780 Also..do yourself a favor and purchase a couple of springs if you dont already have. They're like under 2$ each. I purchased a 2lb and a 4lb. Using the 2lb currently and it feels really nice. Gonna try the 4lb soon and see what i like better.
That harness is out of stock. Suggestions??
it's back in stock fyi
Is the new 3/4 Ms. PacMan wave 3? I would need the double 4 wave 3 17 inch cable correct? Thanks
It's wave 3 or 4 but either way it's the same harness. And 12" probably works but grabs the 17 to be safe
Says won’t skip any steps. Joystick magically in multiple pieces because he skipped some steps.
that's how the joystick came bucko
@@UnqualifiedCritics Weird. All my Sanwa came assembled, minus ball top.
Dude did you see the gsme lineup on the pac man console ?
Galaga 88 and dragon spirit etc. shake my head. Dude why wouldn’t they put that game lineup in a cabinet. ???
Best game selection is on crappy controller console blows my mind who makes these decisions stop stupid man
Lol yup and that was exactly my comment in the video I did on it. Great games list but no way I'm buying that console
Just did this, and I would avoid this and find a better solution, this stick is worse then the stock one by far..
Your stick my be defective or have a loose actuator
