    All Gathered Up Episode 2 - Stretch, Understitching and Stitch in the ditch.
    We love the Great British Sewing Bee, but sometimes we want more of the educations side and there just isn't enough time in the edit to give us that as well as the entertainment. That's what this show 'All gathered up' is about. Join Carol Alayne - Master Tailor & Couturier and myself to guide you through a technique or an issue/problem that comes up in each weekly Sewing Bee episode. I'm sure there will be many a tip scattered throughout too!
    An epic of an episode with another demo from Carol. When we started talking about the made to measure, Carol started to talking about her kit that she developed for Team GB in the 2012 Olympics!!! How amazing is that?

    You are so right about the discussion with the people at the fabric store! I take a drive for fabric. Thankfully, I’ve never had to buy fabric online. Fabric also has to be washed and ironed. And yes slow down and enjoy the process.

    Fabulous content - I just love how Carol demonstrates her skills to show us how to execute the perfect x [zip/pocket/neckline line up etc] Wonderful. I do enjoy this probably more than the Bee itself. And I totally agreed with Carol about Dom's skirt for the golf - precision personified. How this could be in the bottom 3 I have no idea. It was my favourite - he should have put a red bow on it.

    A super episode packed with a demo on Stretch and how to deal with it....the answer....it's all about the preparation! We get to see what Carol has been making over the last few weeks and find out that she designed a Team GB kit for Shooting too! It's Jammed full of content. We hope you get some value out of the 90minutes. Links to all my sewing machine needle videos in the description below. Stuart

    Lovely comments and sewing tips , thankyou . I was surprised Marcus won the pattern challenge with an unfinished hem and wonky sleeve, I think they’re weighting design decisions over sewing ability . Yet again not enough time given for the challenges . Sewers think the programme is about sewing but maybe the producers think it’s a reality show ?

    Another fantastic episode, thank you ❤
    I was very impressed with Carol’s real gold medal winning sportswear! It illustrated perfectly the importance of creating a garment that fits the needs of the wearer.
    I sometimes do zipper pockets like that on bags and use narrow double sided tape (away from seam allowance) to hold the zip in place. Good if you’re using a fabric you can’t pin too! I use my clapper a lot too!!

    Wonderful episode today, I really enjoyed learning all about stabilising the seams on stretchy cloth, and the items to do it with. This is like an hourly masterclass each week. So helpful, and the expertise from Carol is wonderful. Great commentary from Stuart too, good luck with your shirt pattern.
    I have not seen a separating concealed zip before. Loved Carol's garments, although I would never wear a bubble dress ☺. The suit was fabulous.

    Regarding ease/negative ease: You have to KNOW YOUR ACTUAL BODY MEASUREMENTS (the exact ones one your body). In every sewing pattern are two kinds of ease included. First you need a certain amount just to move and breath (Look in pattern construction books, normally you find this numbers in the calculation lists) the second "part" of ease included in a sewing patterns is the amount you add according to the fit you want and/or type of garment.
    !MEASURE THE ACTUAL PAPER PATTERNPIECE.! -
    While working with stretch fabrics you have to measure how much stretch your fabric has by itself.- crosswise for one-way stretch, cross- and lengthwise for two-way stretch)
    Compare that with the ease (just width OR length and width! )you would have for a garment out of woven fabric or what your paper patternpiece includes and there you go.
    On a pattern-description for stretch fabrics there is often a recommontation for the stretch for fabric should have
    (For tight fitted garments like swimmware or so my rule of thumb is - use about 80% of your real body measurements) -
    Getting deeper into all that, I highly recommend to get a solid book regarding patterndrafting. Even if you don´t want to draft your own patterns it is so helpful to understand how the combination of Body - pattern - fabric - fit works. It is an well worth investment for livetime.
    Just my two cent.. Kirsten

    OMG Carol...I'm watching this on holiday and am desperate to get home and finally make a stretch fabric garment. Asma inspired me last year and I really wanted to try .....but never quite managed to psych myself up to it....watching your explanations and demonstrations has made such a difference - I love technique and precision (not so hot on the design side...🤔.) You've given me so much confidence...I'll be saving and rewatching all your tips. Many thanks 😘

    Thank you so much for answering my question! I really like the thinking about treating a sample like kitting a swatch. I think in fabric buying there's often a bit of a scarcity mindset i.e. you can't buy a swatch because perhaps they'll sell out in the meantime - that might say more about me though! :D Really love these, thank you for the time and effort you put in.

    Thanks for another interesting episode!
    Also thanks for answering my question more clearly than I asked it. Following the stretch theme, I only meant to ask about the situation where the garment is smaller than the wearer and must stretch. But you covered that in your answer when you said to pay attention to the fabric and the wearer, do test fittings, and beware of too-deep armscyes.

    Brilliant, of course! I am crocheting while listening to sewing. My mom would have loved these discussions. She was the seamstress. She made practically all my clothes. I loved it. I could choose the patterns and fabrics to be unique. She was a stickler too. Her plaids matched perfectly not like affordable store bought. So, are you a tailor or do you just dabble? I am newer to you so you are full of surprises!

      Hello! Having learned dressmaking from both grandmothers and mother, I moved to London from Michigan, USA to discover Savile Row and was hired on the spot. There were very few women in the trade at that time. Here I am, still in the fraternity 36 years later, and still learning!

      And what skills she had hey, wow. lovely to hear. Oh me? Well I'm a patchworker/quilter and I'm learning dressmaking as I do these shows with Carol. So I dabble. Carol is the professional.

    Lovely show as always. I went to a workshop on sewing with Jersey once and we were advised to use a small zigzag stitch or if our machines had it, the lightning stitch. Apparently this has a bit more give in it or something?? Any thoughts?
    If using straight stitch i see you just increased the length a little- does this do the same thing?

    • @carolalayne1555
      @carolalayne1555 Місяць тому +1

      Good point about using an alternative zig zag stitch, this does work. But my industrial sews a straight stitch only so I have had to find ways over the years. You can increase the stitch length and use a strong polyester thread.

    Curling and loss of 'fluff' - I would use paper to hold the stretch under control, and put fabric in the freezer to "stabilise ' the fabric and control the fluff - right or wrong?

    • @carolalayne1555
      @carolalayne1555 Місяць тому +1

      Yes, I think you are correct using paper to stabilise some fabrics. I have never put anything in the freezer though, how does that work??

    • @fanp1188
      @fanp1188 Місяць тому

      It 'freezes' the foundation or backing fabric, and stops the warp and weft moving as easily as it might

  • @fanp1188
    @fanp1188 Місяць тому +1

    Never got on well with any kind of stretch...

    • @carolalayne1555

      Keep at it!

    • @TheWoolpatch
      @TheWoolpatch  Місяць тому +1

      I was the same, but like with most things, just keep at it and making. But I do think you find the 'fabric' you like working with and you keep using that more.
