I Got A Nikon KeyMission 360 Camera - And it Sucks

  • I've been mucking around with 360 video for a while and hoped that the new Nikon KeyMission 360 would be a big step up from the Ricoh Theta S, but sadly I'm disappointed with the product, between the bad quality stitching and the almost non-functional software I'm seriously thinking of sending it back.
    Disclosure: I bought these cameras with my own money, none of the hardware was supplied for free, so I can be completely honest about this stuff.

    When will these camera companies learn that we want a camera that we can just push a button and start recording. The less steps we need to get a shot, the more shots we'll get. If a camera is too much of a hassle to operate, we just won't use it, which completely defeats the purpose.

    • @scottmanley
      @scottmanley  7 років тому +4

      +LazerLord10 but you can't do that with a 360 camera, the operator wants to operate it at a distance.

      Self-timer? Also, wouldn't it be easier just to trim the beginning of the video a little bit rather than fiddle with your phone? I mean, the best option would be to include both methods of recording, of course.

      Add a 10 second delay after pressing the button and I'd have plenty of time to plant the monopod into the dirt and hide behind a tree. ;)

      qqq1701 then there's even more stitching when you look up or down. We need 4 lenses in a pyramid!

      Why is 3 useless? Any more than 2 is going to mean less extreme angles and less distortion on the edges. This should make stitching easier.

    I wish I was able to watch your video before I bought mine. I have the Ricoh as well, and I find myself going back to it. The software workaround i found that works for the Keymission 360 is to connect to camera settings first before accessing remote camera, I found that it connects (after 5-8 seconds) the remote photography without issue, and i also adjusted the wifi settings and removed the password to connect to wifi signal of the camera. I already bought this cam and I don't have a choice, so if you're looking for a replacement for your Ricoh Theta S this isn't it 😤. Thanks for the review Scott!

    Scott. I operate a popular paintball channel here on YT and was about to pull the trigger on this unit. Your review and others across the board stopped me dead in my tracks. I'd be side mounting this unit so one side of stitching would be moot point. BUT, if I don't bother with phone connection and review and edit all my videos back at post production would you say this is safer selection? Consider that I would most likely either shoot these as showcase commentary videos or supplement perspective shots with this. Hopefully you are like myself and reply to comments. Peace

    I would highly recommend the Samsung gear 360. 30MP 360 photos, near 4K 360 video, and very good stitching. Got myself one for Christmas and couldn't be happier. You do need a newer Samsung phone but there are hacked versions of the app out there that work on most any phone. The camera can be run without the app though.

    I got this camera 2 weeks ago, it works just fine, I have few hints for u, it turns off after 30 sec, so make sure it is turned on, and put ur phone on airplane mode then turn the Bluetooth and the wifi on, if u tried to pair it before make sure you go to the Bluetooth sitting in your phone and forget the pairing because otherwise it will fail, and for new pairing process u hold the record button on the camera for 7 sec until the two light start flashing alternately then you open the app quickly, if you successfully paired go to camera settings on the app and change the auto turn off time to 5 min, hopefully that will helped

    The resolution is so much better on the Nikon that the stitching artifacts don't seem like that much of an issue, IMO. Though I guess if you're really focused on the immersion for 3D video, it could be a problem.

    • @ARVash
      @ARVash 7 років тому +1

      The default isn't the full resolution so perhaps Scott did a whoobs.

    • @Nuovoswiss

      No, I think he just places a LOT of importance on the stitching artifact at the 180° line.

    • @ARVash
      @ARVash 7 років тому

      Interesting, yeah I can see in certain applications how that could be really important. I think also my total lack of frustration with the software has made this be a LOT less painful for me than a lot of other people. Mine literally worked first time every time.

    I agree fully, here is my post to Nikon back in November and I am still waiting for a reply, November 4, 2016
    The camera itself is very nicely made. Every physical part of the camera seems like they tried hard to make it functional and easy to use. The door for the battery and the SD card is fantastic, with a dual lock to make it harder to open by mistake. The lenses are easy to swap out from the standard to the underwater ones.
    Unfortunately the software available for the camera is not nearly as polished. Pairing the camera with an Android 7.1 Google Pixel took 3 tries and the load time between moving from camera to pictures, or to the settings in the camera is painfully slow. After uninstalling and reinstalling the app, and re-pairing the camera to the phone I gave up on the app and purchased the ML-L6 Nikon remote.
    This was the beginning of another painful trial. The instructions listed in the ML-L6 very nicely refer you to the camera instructions. Nikon kindly sends you the abridged version of the instructions (you need page 60 in a 49 page book).
    Luck has it that I still have my Samsung S7. It’s running 6.1 and has NFC which was much faster to pair with the camera than the Wi-Fi direct. The app still has issues connecting to the camera, but it makes changing settings easier. I will just use the remote until Nikon updates their SnapBridge software or does a firmware update for the camera (or both).

    I use a Samsung Tablet Pro 8... Run the Software, Click Remote Photography and THEN turn on the camera (hold top button for 2 seconds), wait a moment and it pairs nicely full functionality. The convenience of fast processing in-camera and easy downloading to a computer is a snap just jpgs and mp4 standard formats. I think angle position is important to avoid trying to capture where the seam is but that is to be expected in any case with a two lens system. It has yet to be particularly a problem in my shoots. I am still loving the camera after a few months of using an Oculus Rift for viewing. Good sound recording too.

    I was a tad worried when I saw the title, but I realize that most of my the issues mentioned I have gotten past. Bluetooth works ok for me, had a bit of trouble with the WiFi at first, but once I turned off smart network switching it's been fine ever since. I'm not able to check the videos yet, and I'm sure they aren't exactly IMAX quality but I'm sure it'll be fine.

    I too had big hopes for the Nikon after trying and returning another camera.
    Questions:
    1) Can you record without using a phone? (ie button on the camera)
    2) Can you import the video into a PC with ease and then just use your own edit suite and inject and upload, thus negating the need for Nikons own software?
    3) If yes to the above, does it save movie files in equirectangular (16:9) or in spherical (1:1)?
    Thanks in advance.

    Nikon has a history of shipping REALLY bad software that is nearly unusable. And like you said, the Hardware is almost always phenomenal. The D7100, for instance, was the only prosumer camera that would output uncompressed video through hdmi.

    I am also looking at sending mine back as the big problem for me right now in addition to all the problems mentioned is that it is not very difficult to view and share the images after the shots are taken. Basically you need to have the camera on and paired to view them. Google recognizes the images as 360 but they don't open and forget trying to email an image. It has been very disappointing on the software side of things and I have not heard anything about any updates coming anytime soon from Nikon.

  • @iamnotapoet
    @iamnotapoet 7 років тому +1

    Scott, Thanks for the review. We also have a Theta S that we LOVE except for the INSANELY bad 240 video resolution. And a COMMON piece of idiocy with both camera is a STILL button that doesn’t have a delay. That make it NEVER useful, they both should have a DELAY setting for stills from the hardware button. We only have the KeyMission for 3 days and have also been unable to get app to work. Not so horrible in that with Ricoh we mostly do video and just press record button. But for stills we need app… or a standard delay. Anyhow, the main problem i have with the KeyMission 360 is ergonomic . I LOVE stuffing my pockets with camera and ALWAYS have the Theta in my pocket. That will never happen with KeyMission 360. Also, is it my imagination that the KeyMission is MUCH worse at hand held? I think the Ricoh does some accelerometer stuff to help motion in video. What are your thoughts on that? Also, are your 360 videos playable in Chrome on Mac? They only play flattened version. I edited in Final Cut X and then used Spatial Media Metadata Injector to reinfect media data. It plays 360 in FIREFOX on the Mac and on IOS UA-cam app, but NOT in Chrome on the Mac. Have you had that problem? BTW, you can see our first test vlog of KeyMission 360 while we talk about 360 biscuits and 360 degree sex videos. Here is the link:

      The Theta S does have a delay option in hardware, you need to turn on the device by Holding the power and WiFi buttons at the same time and the shutter trigger will include a delay.

      Yikes on the methodology. Thanks for the tip. I can't see why ALL these cameras don't have a default STILL delay and also a changeable preference in app. Does the Nikon have a delay option? Thanks again for the great review... -- Zork

    This is the highest quality video footage i've ever seen from the Nikon. I have preordered it am I'm still looking forward to getting it - it will be released in Germany at the beginning of November. For som reason I have predicted, that the Software would be an issue because I always have made Bad experiences with it: Connecting my Nikon DSLR with the Phone and operating it, Connecting my Panasonic Camcorder to the phone... It's all a pain in the *ss and it doesn't work as a quick and reliable connection . If i like the video quality I would probably buy the remote control for another € 50 because I have to rely on that remote function.

    Thanks for the video! I picked up the Kodak SP360 4K twin camera bundle and what I've named the "blind ring" is way larger than even that Nikon. It's just rubbish for anything that's close to the camera. And with the Kodak, you have to compile the separate files from each camera and stitch them together yourself. You can adjust each half of the sphere individually, but it takes forever and if you move foreground items into view, you double the background items. The image quality is pretty great though.

    I have one and I can connect okay, although using the wifi is annoying. the problem I find is that the format doesn't seem to be accepted by the 360 editing software that I use to narrow the view. What software did you use to put it into this video?

    I think you're being a little harsh. I've had no issues pairing on Android, but your right about the close range stitching in static positions. when you get the thing moving though it's less of an issue. results from it are great and the shock and water proof design is great. You can record the images and videos using the buttons on the sides of you want quick access without using SnapBridge. but even when i needed to have greater control I've never had a problem with the app, and the functions it offers are useful and plentiful. it's a little expensive but a great product.

      Just reporting my experience, it wouldn't pair reliably with my Nexus 7. And the software was non functional with iOS and that's a deal breaker.

    I saw in a different review (that was questionable) that the nikon stitches on the camera itself and not in post. I don't know how the theta's work, but I thought they did that too. I have the gear 360 and I like it quite a bit but thought this might be better. many reviews say otherwise though. Do you think canon will ever make a 360 camera? Also, with the Theta, can you live stream that from the PC natively (pretty sure you can but want to double check)? Can the Nikon do anything like that through the computer?

    • @scottmanley
      @scottmanley  7 років тому

      Yup, Nikon Stitches on camera. The Theta S stitches stills on the camera but video needs to be post processed.

    I just got one and yea I'm disappointed in the stitching. I got it because of the 4K res and complete 360 twin lenses. A lot of people tried to sell me single lens that only did upto 260 but try to make you think their complete 360. Like the Fly 360. Talk about a misleading title. I've been advised to forget the software and just use this in airplane mode. Film to SD card and move that to the computer. But I would like to do live streaming. Or output directly to UA-cam. But I don't know if that's possible at the moment.

    I have the Theta and the Nikon Keymission. Agreed...the software for the Nikon is awful. I had to UA-cam how to connect to the app. Should be way simpler. Also annoyed by the Wifi need for viewing footage...and the link to jump there goes somewhere else in the settings. So annoying. The Theta is so simple and easy to use. If they made a 4k version...I'd keep using it for simplicity sake.

    Yay, I've had this on order for months. How do you have yours already? Edit: shame you're not enjoying it. I guess I'll find out soon if I can live with the bad software. Other reviewers are happier, though, especially with things like metering and white balance compared the the Gear 360. Hmmm.

    Thanks for the very informative and useful review. I've been considering the Keymission 360, and like you, I'm a Nikon person from SLR to DSLR. I'm disappointed in the Keymission based on your review. I have a Sony Action Cam AS30V, and I have to say, the Japanese are great at hardware, but terrible at software (for cameras, and the like; they're gaming software is much better, I'd guess, but I"m not a gamer, so I can't say for sure). I hope there's a software fix for the stitching problem you pointed out. And certainly, the skectchy wifi/bluetooth connections will probably require some hardware and software updates from Nikon. But it is their first serious foray into the action camera market, so I'm hoping they'll do better the second time around. I'm willing to give them a Mulligan. Thanks again for the review!

    Scott.. are you able to upload 360 photos to Facebook and are viewable as 360 on the Android FB app? I have the Nikon and the 360 videos are interactive but not the photos. They are interactive in desktop browser in FB but not in Android app. Do you have any experience there?

    Thanks Scott. Adressed alot of the same things I am coming across at the moment.
    My main concern at the moment is software. I have previously used Go Pro and I am finding Apps & Utilities sorely lacking. Specifically creating and uploading to you tube. I have not been able to find any advice, or instruction. The software utility has one button "Save for You Tube" Then nothing about upload. Searched the PDF's , Nikon site and google. I have contacted Nikon (I got Nikon Asia as I am in Australia) with no response. Waiting on Nikon USA.
    Can you shed any light on saving/editing and uploading?
    Disclaimer: I am new to the 360 scene so treat me like a simpleton.
    Thanks.
    M

    Maybe I'm blind today, but I didn't see any join at all on the Ricoh. The Nikon join on the hand even Stevie Wonder would have noticed.
