Liked your thoughts about adjusting scales parallel to machine axis. Always a lot of thoughts when fitting a DRO. Fitted DROs to my lathe and my mill 5 years ago. Uses magnetic scales primary because they are smaller. They are easily cut to length. More than half of my work is steel or cast iron. Never cleaned the scales. Fitted scale on the rear of the cross slide. Less risk of damage and I can use a following rest. Possible to adjust gibs. Only limited tailstock travel 1 1/4 inch (30mm). You need a milling machine to make mounting parts.

Thanks! I may look into moving it if it’s too much in the way where it is.

Nice video. I saw a guy on youtube who mounted the dro for the crosslide under the leadsctew cover, right behind the cross slide. A bit more stickout but no risk of crashing into the chuck. When gripping large stock, don't the protruding jaws hit the scale?

Thanks! And yes, the jaws could hit the scale, so I need to be careful there. Hopefully I’ll never need to be that close to a big part. Or get a smaller chuck. Maybe.

@@customfabrications this is the channel i was talking about. If you ever do decide the scale is in the way in the front of the carriage: youtube.com/@olennemac2502?si=gLvUhXYJ0ocGXtvl
