Blackhawk has never been the "best" thing on the market, but they sure as hell innovated with lots of stuff during the early days of the GWOT. It's easy to poo-poo now, with 20 years of hindsight, but it was way better than any equipment we were being issued at the time
Yeah, I used to buy a lot of their stuff until I found better equipment for the same price point. Still have my Raptor X3 backpack though... I just am, very careful, how much weight I put in it these days. Many of their designs, especially in hydration and backpacks, inspired A LOT that followed on. Something is to be said of that.
I have a similar early 2000's molle vest/rig.. Changed some of the pouches with slim (more) "modern" open top pouches with a bungee in the front, two rows of 3 mags and two old school vintage pouches marked " 2 x Diameco 5.56" inside. Its a funny piece of gear.. The configuration is quite slim even with 6, 30rd mags..
I remember getting their PAPER CATALOG and being so stoked to look at the new gear and goooch out . . . .😑 while listening to my WALKman and wearing my hypercolor shirt on my bunk bed!!. . . .😁
I dunno about that, I still have a commando chest rig and SF holster running strong after 24 years now of abuse, they make some heavy duty Nylon shiz, and SF/Delta was being issued this stuff at the time. It might be old but tough as nails.
Seen you at a local gun store picking stuff up. I was picking up my first silencer. You were talking to the cashier your UA-cam channel came up I just said “I knew you looked familiar”. Didn’t wanna bother to much but got to see my favorite range monkey. Keep up the good work!
@@Managerialoutcomes I saw a guy in a balaclava and I ran up to him and hugged him. Turns out it wasn't you. Which was quite awkward. Apparently, anyone can buy a balaclava and wear it. Weird.
Fighting Load Carrier (FLC) is us militarys molle version of this. Super underrated piece of budget kit. Then they had TAP system which is also slept on.
I always wanted that vest when I was a kid. As the name implies, it was developed for Delta Force and those pouches were built to handle a wide range of magazines for when mission profile disallows the use of standard military issue. It's still a bad ass vest and is still made today. Id be able to paintball with that vest because of those magazine pouches. This is most likely the first good review I've seen on this vest.
Administrative Results... White-Collar Incomes... Whutevs... I'd love to see you review the IBV-88 rig. It was apparently U.S. "spec ops issue" for a long time, it was meant to replace ALICE gear (before MOLLE came on-line), and was worn by spec ops in the movie "Clear and Present Danger," 1994
96.....I was a Drill Sergeant in 96..yes..Benning....RLTW. 1967 Grunt here. Keep up the good work young man. God bless these United States of America...He has already blessed Texas.
'91 and I really feel old. "God's Plaid" will always bring a smile to my face, reminds me of a simpler time. I would see Blackhawk all the time when I went with my father to the surplus shop. That logo is just nostalgic to me.
I had a somewhat similar set up during the first 8 years of GWOT that i used off and on. It was the Rhodesian style black hawk chest rig. The large mag pouches gave way to smaller ones because of speed and to make sure us bigger guys can get in and out of vehicles and through tiny door ways or hallways. I liked those larger mag pouches because you never knew if you needed to use that 4th pouch for a large water bottle or another radio.
it doesn't matter what looks good or sounds good in kit. In the end it is shooter's preferance. As i was told by an old SF dude who now owns an excellent shop somewhere in NC that supplies Bragg commandos and LE: " everything ends up getting franke-mollied in the end". If H gear is going to benefit your shooting style and fits your body better then go with that works ! thank you for making this video.
These chest rigs and derivatives aren’t too bad. I ran a similar one in Auscam. Had two triple mags on each side and then the water bottles behind and 3 grenade pouches above the right mag pouches. That was my first vest for in vehicle use. Prior to that used an SADF M83 in Auscam, it didn’t last long, I ran out belt kit with an LBV for longer field trips and would carry as many mags as I could 12-18 if I really had too. It’s good to see how we’ve progressed from this and companies did see a need/want for upgraded gear which we now see as second class or only suitable for LARP and Airsoft but guys would trust this gear on a two way range.
Back in the early 2000's I was playing airsoft. A few of the guys I was playing airsoft worked at DPMS, when it was in St Cloud MN. So our airsoft team had old school Blackhawk gear. Simply because one of the guys could get it for 30% off retail prices. If I remember correctly. One of the guys (Keith) got a black version of that vest
Nice, the DOAV is technically an LBV, not a Chest Rig (as it is a Vest with backing capability, and not open backed harness only in semantics), but we won't hold it against you. Same era as and similar to the LBV-88, also a dope system that still works pretty darn well.
I have that same vest. Well, it’s more recent, and black, and I’ve had it modified a little bit. (With pouches for .44 Magnum speedloaders. Yes, really.) It’s a shame Blackhawk quit making it a few years ago. Sometimes it’s nice to just be able to buy one piece of gear that’s ready to go out of the box.
Loving the 2nd channel content, perfect name change as well. Also, crazy that your second channel is at the same subs that your main channel was when I first found you.
Holy jeebus this makes me feel old. I remember ordering the Blackhawk catalog online back in the day. Good ole AOL dial up lol I bought the AR15 4 mag drop leg pouch and the drop leg holster for my USP. That stuff seemed so high tech and just looked cool. Expensive range day wear is all it was basically.
The front slot in the ammo pouch is for a "quick" mag and the retention strap is to hold down the other mags. Also you could stuff a mag and the front of the velcro flap into it so you had a quick reload available and the others are covered and secured. I was issued one and loved it at the time. It was always blackhawk and eagle making cool shit back then.
I like! Maybe it's because I'm a dinosaur from the web belt and suspenders era, but I like gear that is easy to put on, like a vest. I also wonder about going prone and low-crawling with all that gear in front. What would be wonderful about this rig would be if the pouches were removable; I would consider taking the front/center pouches and either removing them or moving them to the side/underarm positions, moving the utility pouches around to the rear. If the pouches are fixed, well, put lighter, more compressible things in them.
this was well before MOLLE / FLC... more early-mid 90s. Most were BlackHawk! production... I had one of the Eagle Industries produced versions which was more refined in its execution... the pockets were derived from the the SF30AK style chest rigs. Layout was heavily influenced by Arktis vest platforms from the 80s. EGL sends
Ran the MOLLE version in ‘04. It absolutely works better without the pistol belt attached. Still got in a chest with some other old crap for my kids to look at. It was in interesting piece of kit at a time period when the learning curve was growing at extremely fast rate for textile manufacturing, sewing quality, and flat out what works and doesn’t.
I bought one brand new from their catalog when I was with the 3d Batt in like 98 or 99 and NEVER got to use it really, and hell when you packed that thing out and put over my RBA then throw on a ruck, forget it. And you really couldn't jump with them either plus we got the RACKs like a week before the thing actually got to me so I sold it to a buddy of mine that was in the 82d. Best purchase I never got to use. RLTW!
Love the Maglight/foregrip combo. Very retro 👌If you can get your hands on an Armalite free float rail for a Kyle Lamb era car15 that’d make for a great review!
I'm using a Blackhawk vest in my shooting videos ...You need a water pouch in back to counter the weight. and outer belt for pistol holster. If you don't velcro the mags closed you will loose them getting up from a prone position.
Looks like an Eagle Industries Tac V1 in Blood Diamond. Hard to say for sure, since there were so many knockoffs (like BlackHawk), but that would have been Gucci kit at the time.
Sweet kit. I got really into tactical gear while I was working for the prison, after a coworker got a few of us into airsoft. Most of them didn't stick with it, I did but haven't hit a field in too long now. Had a friend from karaoke night who was USAF Security Forces, I got some cool gear from him. His Blackhawk vest was cool but it was one with attached pouches that didn't fit what I was running, so it got sold. The best stuff, man I got to tell you the full story on this sometime, was a box with everything but a uniform. KEVLAR INCLUDED. He was skinnier than I am so it's a little snug but I really don't wanna get rid of it.
