I was really looking forward to this video, and it did not disappoint! I asked about the materials specifically, and am so glad that you provided such a thorough and well worded answer! Thank you for all of the answers too! When I switched to 100% Cotton Arches 300gsm paper it felt like I had just entered an entirely new medium in art. I had used a variety of non-cotton 250gsm paper as I did a lot of character art that worked okay with it. But when I started doing more fine art (have been obsessed with botanical art for a year now - your Patreon has been SO incredibly rewarding on this journey). When I started at an art high school, I got myself a set of watercolours in 2011. I had been intendentti to get something cheaper and a student grade, but my dad who was helping pay for the set, insisted that we buy high quality paints as they’ll last forever. We bought me an 18 colour set of Schmincke. It was many many years before I started really practicing with watercolour properly and started primarily using watercolours… But today, with just 2 of the colours about to run out 12 years later, I am so grateful that I was able to get this professional set from the start. I have added to my set, But haven’t used any other brand other than some Metallics from Coliro and a couple of handmade colours from a small business. I would love to some day try out another brand… But I have honestly not ever felt that Schmincke couldn’t pull off what I would want to do. So right now as the finances aren’t too great due to the Economical situation, I’ll stick to my Schmincke Horadam Professional watercolours. In general though - if you have the money to spend and want to try sthg new - I highly recommend the Schmincke brand. Though it is unfortunate how they’re not that readily available.
I love granulating watercolors and wouldn't want to wait :). So many wonderful watercolors to choose from and I can't really limit myself. Also the Chronos brushes and 100% cotton paper are great. Thanks for the fun video. Lovely painting!
M. Graham is also a professional brand of watercolour (originally made in USA - not sure if still made there). It is honey-based so apparently not great for warm humid climates such as Australia.

Graham brand are a favourite of Steve Mitchell (Mind of Watercolor channel in the U.S.). A lot of painters love Winsor & Newton as you mentioned. Perhaps I will try a tube one of these days. I love ochres -- as you mentioned, Daniel Smith has a crazy amount of various ochres.

I so admire your work Anna and I might have said it before but you are so easy to listen to. I also admire any artist including yourself who can paint in colours not normally seen in nature. I am such a literal painter and what I see in the photo I just have to paint.. not sure how I can get out of that box!! I'm hearing a lot about granulation lately, is it a new term? Thank you again for your comments Jenny! Granulating watercolors are colors with larger than usual pigment particles - they tend to "gather" around on wet paper creating texture. You can find that information on the tube - it usually says "G" if the pigment is granulating. Some are very subtle {like your typical french ultramarine} some are more pronounced. Yes I agree that granulating colours used to their full effect are a subject of their own, although I do use them with my others I find so much care needs to be taken as to where and when to include add them, or some unhappy accidents happen, I’m presently collecting a palette of just granulating paints as I love the effects so much and in playing with them I’m finding a completely different style just for them and also topics I wouldn’t normally find inspiring, I normally do wildlife but granulating pigments do amazing landscapes so I being pushed out of my comfort zone by them 😊
My request is that you do a lesson on how to interpret lights and shadows on paintings without making it choppy. How do you choose colour temperatures as well. Please
When I started watercolour painting just less than a year ago, I was clueless about supplies, but fortunately stumbled on the correct paper. In my case, being vegan, I don’t use Arches but use Fabriano Artistico 100% cotton 300g (140lbs). Since then I’ve been gifted some paper that isn’t 100% cotton and while it’s good paper, it just doesn’t stay wet for long enough. This is not ideal for a beginner as you really need confidence to paint quickly. So I agree, paper is so important, if I hadn’t used 100% cotton from the start, I would have found the process more difficult than it needed to be and been disappointed with the results. My advice, buy 100% cotton paper in a smaller size if you’re on a tight budget. Again, with paint, I enrolled in a class and was given a list of brands and colours to get and being vegan, chose Daniel Smith (mostly vegan except for colours using PBK9, fortunately not on my list). I find Daniel Smith paints to be beautiful and easy to use. Granulating pigments are among my colours but I’ve had no problem with them, probably because in class we paint a wide variety of subjects using different techniques and they work well for some of the subjects we paint. Of course, guidance from my very experienced teacher is helpful here! My brushes are synthetic and work really well. I love your tutorials and really look forward to them here on UA-cam and I’m looking forward to learning about how you approach composition. Hopefully that will be on UA-cam? Helpful and enjoyable to watch. I admire your painting style. As for granulating pigments I only use them in very loose florals or abstract backgrounds. I don't find them appropriate for detailed work. You are a powerhouse of information and clear instruction. I see a book in your future. I hope!
Very nice moose. The only thing I question is the eye ball. It looks unpainted. Moose have dark brown eyes. I’m also excited to look up the new escoda line you recommended. I have versatil and reserva. I very much prefer reserva. But I will check out the new line. Thank you for the video.

6:03 concerning lifting of colors with the second layer one addition from my point of view: I made the experience that opaque colors lift more easily then the transparent ones, even if I let it dry over night. So opaque colors seem not to be the best for layering techniques.

Daniel smith has a fairly transparent Yellow Ochre. Van Gogh is a student line that is brilliant and lightfast.
I would love to see you repaint this with your usual colors…..more transparent and use it to compare what the different pigments do.
