  • Ok we’re back after a long break but we’re back to bringing you good music. We are continuing with the beginner series but now we are getting a little more advanced. Today we cover Rumba Guaguanco for two congas Havana style. The video is longer than most because I must explain to you how to play it correctly within clave which is the key to this rhythm. Take your time learning this and also go back to my earlier videos on clave and maybe the conga tones to help you with this beautiful rhythm. Ok I hope this helps and happy drumming!

Some very good points made here. I never realized that the first open comes after the first beat of the bar! I've now got just that little bit more understanding of this great rhythm

Nice breakdown - also good explanation of etiquette of not playing slaps over a Quinto player

One can also enter with el salidor after the first two clave sounds? ... tac, tac, low high high low...

Yes! You are referring to the entry made famous by Los Muñequitos De Matanzas. I can show that on another video for sure! Please like and subscribe!

@@mikec.3958 Si señor. It’s an easier entry for beginners. I started playing while growing up in PR in the 70s. Great explanation on the relationship to the clave. Playing atravesado it’s like dancing without any clave coordination. Some learn complex salsa steps but perform them completely out of rhythm and they look terrible even when using fancy turns. Same thing here, you can do everything right but if you are “atravesado” it sounds terrible. It’s sooo important. I started out playing “trepado encima” de la clave and atravesado until I was corrected and all of a sudden all the repiques/Cortes started falling in place. Great point you are emphasizing.

Those drums sound nice, are they, original models? And are those manito skins on them? They sound great!

@@mikec.3958 I have just an original model conga, I'm after a quinto. I'll need to get some manito heads on them when I manage to source a quinto.
      Thanks for the reply.
