- My new favourite lens - Olympus 45mm f1.8
After a failed attempt to shoot this video in York at the weekend, I figured I'd give it another try when the fog rolled in and everything looked amazing.
The Olympus M. Zuiko 45mm f1.8 is the first Prime Lens I've bought for my E-M10 mkii and I couldn't be happier with it.

This was one of the most beautiful and inspiring videos I have ever seen in reference to the M4/3 system. I mean WOW!
Very kind of you. Thanks very much 🖖
This is the exact kit setup I got starting my photography journey. I love this lens and I love the photos you made with them. Have a great day David 🙏
Oh gorgeous photos there ! This one is my favorite for my day-to-day family shooting. Whatever the place & the light I can get sharp & nice photos of my loving people ! Have fun ;
Yeah I’m really loving this lens. Definitely suits the way I like to shoot. Thanks for watching 🖖
Loved this vid so much! I'm getting it soon and it's great to see it used for something else than portraits !
It’s an awesome lens! I hope you enjoy using it as much as I do🖖😁
Thanks for sharing and inspiring!
Thanks for watching. It’s an awesome lens🖖
Some of my fave pics from you! Love the colour and density! I think a little em10 and that lens will be my treat to myself! Keep it up, I think your stuff has just rocketed up in quality and it was fantastic before!
Really appreciate that, Barry. This camera has been so much fun and adding this lens to it made it even better 🖖
Incredible results in low light, sharp and very portable. What's not to love? I miss living in the city for night photography. The lights, reflections and atmosphere just does it for me! You should have a fab time with that lens! Enjoy! Oh, and have a great Christmas if I don't message you before then. 😉
Yeah I’m really enjoying this system and this lens is ace. It’s rare for us to get fog like this in the city do I’m making the most of it. Have a great Christmas, mate🖖
I enjoyed that Dave 👍 you got some really great shots. Those weather conditions looked fantastic!
Cheers Mike. I couldn’t have asked for better conditions. Maybe a snowy one next the way the weather is looking😁👍
Great photos! The one with the backlit tree branches really grabbed my attention.
Thanks, Bob. That fog really helped get some atmosphere in the shots🖖
Considering it’s not pro line lens it gives great results for it’s price. I use it with my em10mk2 in addition to panasonic 20mm f1.7, 25mm f1.7 and 45-150mm. I still love my em10mk2 despite using xe1, xt2 and xt4.
My all time favorite lens the original Vivitar Series One 90/2.5 macro lens. It has made me lots of money and I wore one out beyond repair.
amazing photos, congratulations.
Thanks for watching!
Have a good one🖖😁
Rather late to this party, but I really enjoyed this. Inspired me to get out at night more! Some great images and pixel-peeping be damned. Love my 25/1.8 but this is a different perspective.
You made my day ! Thx
Glad to hear it, thanks for watching 🖖
Nice one David, frost and fog is the best (at least for photography at any rate) - I even ventured out a couple of times to get some shots for this years Christmas card - struggled a bit because there were no people about and I was looking for people in brightly coloured scarves, bobble hats and the like - how inconsiderate of them!!!! Cracking little lens, and you know I like a good bargain lens, excellent stuff.
Cheers, Tim. It’s been great conditions recently but it seems like we’re back to the standard rainy and grey now, at least around here. We saw some amazing hats in York last week 🖖
@@DavidFlowerOfficial Dull, windy, grey, windy, damp, dull, flat lighting, dull, windy, grey and wet, yep, that just about sums it up.......although there's a bit of sun this morning....
I bought a Yongnuo 25mm f1.7 after watching a few reviews and was very pleasantly surprised. Cheap as chips and has the bonus of an af/mf switch on the lens body. Brand new autofocus prime for well shy of £100. I visited York last year and absolutely loved it's quirky eccentric beauty. I'll be back, definitely
I think I watched a video relating to the yongnuo recently and got the impression they were worth considering. York is great for street shooting but when it’s busy it’s a pain to even stop walking, never mind making a video 😂
Thanks for watching 🖖
Brother, you nailed it. It's fun...just fun. I've shot sony fuji and olympus. I always come Back to olympus, why. It's fun. I spend more time looking for shots and not thinking about the camera. For years I shot with a em10 mk2 I up graded to a em1 mk2 a great camera but I miss the small body of the em10. Photography should be fun.
Absolutely, I’ve gone from FF Nikon to Sony and thought I’d found my camera in the Sony apsc bodies, but the EM 10 mk ii has changed all of that. Fun!
Thanks for watching 🖖
I got this camera on ebay recently as well with 2 kit lenses, and I love it! I'm new to photography as a hobby, but it's good to know that others are enjoying this camera in 2022 as well. I bought a vintage pentax M 50mm f1.7 for £15 on ebay as well, can't wait to have some fun!
Something I read recently indicated that Olympus use the same sensor across their line up at any given resolution so a 16mpx sensor in the em10 and em10 mk ii is the same as the 16 mpx sensor in the em5 and em1. So from a photography point of view, you’re getting practically the same results with potentially fewer features. The em10 mkii is a very capable camera 🖖
Just placed the same order now from ebay, so excited!
Fantastic photographs. I just bought the lens and the combination with the EM10 mark II is excellent. I have the EM5 mark II so it would be the same capabilities for this type of shooting I think.
Yeah I regularly use the 45mm on my em1 and GH5 and love the results. Thanks for watching mate🖖
Marvellous! I've loved this lens for nearly a decade on my E-M5 (mk 1) and found it had such wonderful restults for almost anything I shot I never bothered upgrading. I literally just upgraded to the OM-1 last week and loving the performance on it, but thinking it might be time to upgrade a to an Olympus pro prime, but still evaluating the options. Great to see this lens get some love.
At this price point it’s hard to not love this lens given how well it performs. I’m glad I went with this one first over the 25mm. Thanks for watching 🖖
Just ordered the AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G today from MPB. Cant wait for weekend night missions. 3 layers of undies and socks.
I had that lens before I went FF with Nikon and it practically lived on my camera. I loved that thing🖖
The Olympus 45mm F1.8 is a bargain, even new! It has lovely rendering at 1.8 and is perfect when stopped down. Same goes for the 25mm F1.8, which is a bit pricey for what it is. Still a good complement to the 45mm, and if you can get a used one for a decent price - go for it! I've put a 37-to-46 mm step-up-ring on my 45mm F1.8 (and other lenses with small filter threads) and use 46mm thread metal lens hoods on most of my lenses to simplify my filter needs …
Yeah that’s a good call with the step up rings. I got into the habit it buying filters for my largest lenses and using step up rings for smaller lenses on my ff setup mainly to save money. I didn’t realise how small the filter thread on the 45mm was so I need to put a step up ring for that on my shopping list🖖
@@DavidFlowerOfficial Yeah, the 45mm looks like an outlier in that regard, but the (quite nice) little 14-42mm 1:3.5-5.6 EZ (motor zoom) lens also uses 37mm (so I have a step-up on this one, too). The 17mm F1.8 and the 12mm F2 have 46mm filter threads. Why Olympus chose 37mm on the 45mm remains a mystery to me.
Awesome night street photography. My current setup em10 ii with handgrip + lumix 20mm f1.7
That 20mm f1.7 might be a good call for a slightly wider than 50mm equivalent that I usually go for. Thanks for watching 🖖
@@DavidFlowerOfficial hi David …what a great set of images.
I bought the Lumix 20mm 1.7 earlier this year and paired it with my Oly EPL 8. It is a great lens and would be ideal for the EM10. I would favour this over the 25mm but it depends upon what you want to shoot.
Keep up the good vids.
Thanks very much. I have a 50mm on my other system so something a bit different for the M43 is in order I think. Thanks for watching 🖖
Nicely framed fella.
Awesome conditions as well.
Appreciate it, mate. Fog and crazy lights is just a dream setting for a cyberpunk nerd like me😁
YOOO MAN ITS FOOKING COLD.
That doesn’t even begin to describe it😂
Freezing fog isn’t nice, not one bit lol
Damn bro, these are fire! I still shoot on my trusty Panasonic G7 and take my 25mm 1.7 everywhere but looking to get add this to my kit.
Were you using any filters on this?
Yeah the 45mm is a great lens. No filters at all. The only time I ever bother with filters is a cpl for shooting water or cars to kill reflections and a vnd for daytime video or long exposures.
I keep looking at the G7. From a body style perspective I think it looks ace. I have the GH5 but that’s just big and full frame looking lol
Fabulous videos mate love your channel, what do you think about an E-M1 and some vintage zuiko lenses ? That could be in a video also if you want , thanks again.
Yeah that sounds like a great idea. I’ll be getting myself an em1 mkii shortly and I already have a few vintage lenses to play with.
Thanks for watching 🖖
@@DavidFlowerOfficial thanks for reply mate, keep in touch.
Literally just watched Robin Wong video on Pana 25mm F1.7. You should check it out before thinking about buying one. I have an OM10 I bought second hand for buttons. Loving it for street photography
Yeah I like Robin’s videos, it’s in my watch list for later. Thanks for the heads up 🖖
Hi David, great video, I have the same camera, just wondering what focus setting you are using?
Hey, Jack. Thanks for watching. For most of my stuff I still shoot in the same way as I always did with my dslrs. S-af with flexible spot. It’s likely that’s not the best way, but it’s always worked for me 🖖
Great one again 👏🏼
If you are considering the 25mm option l would recomnend the Oly one,the Panasonic is cheaper but its not so sharp (l watched some videos before buying and read lots of comparisons). But if you find it for 57£ go for it! 😜
Haha, I’m always on the lookout for a bargain, but I think you’re right, many of the things I read since shooting this pointed either to the Olympus or the Panasonic 20mm.
Thanks for watching 🖖
@@DavidFlowerOfficial 🙋🏻♂️🍻
Great night photohraphy and great combo e-m10 + 45mm f/1.8 ✌️😃
Did you shoot RAW?
I have the same lens on my e-p3 and also have enormous fun.
Yeah I always shoot raw to get the most information in the files. I recently used it on my Lumix gf2 and it was awesome.
Thanks for watching 🖖
I take both photos and videos, so I want to ask how does this lens perform with the breathing effect?
Hello, Nice photos ❤
Is that picture all SOOC ? Straight out of camera or need some editing process ?
What preset do you used ?
I always shoot Raw and edit. If I used any presets it’ll be my own, some of which are free on my website if you want to give them a try 🖖
@@DavidFlowerOfficial well noted 👍 . Will check your website . Thank you
Great shots! I'm curious, what mode were you shooting in? Thanks!
I’m usually in manual for no other reason than I’m a bit of a control freak when it comes to cameras lol
Be careful about the Pany 25, it has a focus shift issue. There are a couple videos about it.
Thanks for the heads up. I’ve already watched something about this (I think it was a Robin Wong video) and decided to look at other 25mm options🖖
Dalke beautiful photographs. Were you shooting in full manual mode or an aperture priority?
Manual mode and I shot everything Raw. Thanks for watching 🖖
The 45 is a brilliant lens i got free from olympus with a camera, sold a couple of o.ympus cameras and lenses which weren't weather sealed to fund my retirement camera present, the om1 but i couldnt part wth the 45
It really is a great lens. It’s rarely been off my camera since getting it👍
Does your camera body & lens sealed for the rain ?
No, the lens isn’t weather sealed nor it the em10 mark ii🖖
is your focus ring kind of stiff or is it just my unit? I dont have another one to compare it to.
Mine seems fine although I have used auto focus most of the time🖖
Tenho uma lente 45mm f/1.8.
É uma lente magnífica.
A minha e-m 10II e esta lente fica um conjunto perfeito.
It really is a great lens. I’m really happy I got this.
Thanks for watching 🖖
For me it's 12mm f2 😊
But I do miss 75mm f1.8 from time to time 😬
I’ve been looking at the 75mm and I think it’s gonna be one I add to the collection. Thanks for watching 🖖
@@DavidFlowerOfficial it's a really great lens, as long you don't want to get close 😊 I found 1 meter was the closest that worked 😬 but keeping the distance and the bokeh 😍
Oh I’m not a fan of getting too close and regularly shoot 135mm on ff so the 75mm will be 👍
@@DavidFlowerOfficial sigma 135mm 1.8?
No I have a couple of vintage 135mm lenses that I adapt to my Canon and Sony cameras 👍
Does live vew zap the battery faster?.
I suspect it might, though coming from a decade of dslrs, all mirrorless I’ve used have garbage battery life in comparison so I probably wouldn’t notice much difference using the evf over the screen. Thanks for watching, mate🖖
