How to ride rollers on a track bike - getting started

- In this video, I show you how to get on to rollers and get started. If you're new to riding rollers, it's easiest if you put them next to a wall or in a doorway so that you can rest an elbow or a shoulder against something.
Riding rollers is a great way of warming up for a race and is a good way of learning to pedal smoothly. Remember to look ahead, rather than staring down at your front wheel!
After falling over once and nearly hitting my head on the work bench I started to wear my helmet during sessions. I also moved everything out of my way and stopped showing off during partys while I was drunk.
People like you must be fun at party
I know Im pretty off topic but does anybody know of a good place to stream new movies online?
@Gary Alden I use flixzone. Just search on google for it =)
@Duke Camilo Yup, have been watching on FlixZone for since april myself =)
@Duke Camilo thanks, I signed up and it seems to work =) I really appreciate it !!
I've watched several videos of beginning the roller regime and hands down yours is the best. Thank you!
Awesome! Thanks Lisa
The best and the most usefull video about how to properly get on/off rollers. And definitely Juliet is very very very nice. Thanks!
After 5 minutes of this tremendous sound cycling you'll become creazy for sure
Fab video - my first set of rollers (in about 50 years of riding bikes) arriving tomorrow & was a little worried!! This is perfect!
I was like, hey I seen her before, I then saw your name and it all came back to me, you were on the GCN training session I did yesterday! Cheers!
Hi Juliet .... I remember using the rollers back in 1968 when I was racing in the Army .... we had a team mate hold us up until we got up to speed .... that was HI Tech back then :-) ... today you have Zwift and Wahoo
That takes a lot of patience....you have my respect! Never rode with clips, just starting to ride drop bar bikes. Restored a vintage 1984 Miele Uno L.S. What a ride coming from mountain bikes...
heeeeey, there's no "morning" !!!!!
love watching these vintage vids from time to time
You 'forgot to say' music, iPod and earphones , is the icing on the cake for training on rollers, so much better than turbo trainers for realism.
Take a tip from a veteran roller-user...
Put maximum pressure in your tyres (or a bit more if you dare) and have the support on the side you get on the bike. That way, you can get on the bike, in the saddle, peddling and properly balanced before letting go of the support, and it feels more natural. Getting off is also safer and easier.
lol my tires can take up to 8bars but when im on rollers im puttin 9.5
hell ya girl on the track bike and rollers!
I could watch this one buttering toast.
Great video, I’ve recently purchased rollers to train during bad weather. I’ve ridden them quite well in the past but now I am much heavier and Clumsy is across understatement regarding my riding. Thanks for the “arm slide” idea, look forward to getting to roll everyday.
I hope it works for you!
You make it look easy omg
Wow..you made it look easy...thanks.
Moving from Turbo Trainer to rollers tomorrow and viewing every video on rollers. This fits my scenario almost exactly. And lets face it pretty ladies on bikes giving good advice always a winner!
Thanks for showing us how to get on with just one wall. I see so many videos of folks doing this in a doorway; but I don't have a doorway I can keep my rollers across. Mine will be in the basement with one pole on the right (as you have a wall). I'm a little apprehensive about using my clip in cleats as this will be my first time (rollers will be delivered in a few days). Getting off looks like falling and catching yourself with your left foot. I think I can deal with that. Thanks again.
No problem!
It can be a little tricky the first time and a leap of faith to put your second hand onto the bars. I'm sure you'll get it. Remember to look ahead not down!
...pretty easy explaination. Thank you...
Awesome work Juliet, you've got a new subscriber :)
thanks
Great for rainy days.!!
More natural than fixed wheel turbo training; I suppose it's a sort of equivalent to lifting free weights as opposed to machine weights. Helps to reinforce balance and technique
Yes, it's definitely useful for that, it smoothes out the kinks in your pedalling
That's a nice analogy!
Sin palabras es el rodillo que en un tiempo usaron los profecionales
Beautiful
Excellent..kept it simple..
The old army adage...
“Keep things simple stupid...”
Well done.
wow nice riding
Thx for sharing great tip
good job Juliet
The rollers seem to make a terrible noise (whistle), was it like this also already at the first usages?
Lol yeah I feel that the main thing to do on a track bike is keeping the pedaling even. Haven't tried it on a road bike though.
it really helps improve your pedalling, that's one of the main reasons I like doing it because my pedalling is not naturally very smooth or regular.
Excellent vids by the way. Can I ask what taco model is the roller you have. Many thanks in advance. I'm wanting to keep fit over winter. 👍
The physics behind this is interesting...!
Jeez you make that look easy. My boyfriend keeps bugging me to learn rollers because he's too scared to teach himself. Bigger you are, harder you fall I guess.
Camille Raneem you can do it!! Give it a go!
Do you ever come flying off the sides.
VERY NOICY ROLLER ITS TACX?AWESOME SOUND ITS BIGCHAINRING?
just got my galaxia yesterday and stayed on for my 2 min test run, but the noise was extreme. probably will ride with earbuds and led zeppelin.
This sounds like a jet engine. Are these rollers really this noisy? I heard that non-slick tires tend to add to the decibel level but those must be slicks on that bike?
Do you still like this roller system, I want one?
Have you done a vid showing how to mount the bike/clip in and ride roller on a fixed gear bike without a wall?
I built my own rollers, and it feels like a 5% gradient.
Спасибо
Are those roller things made for all kinds of bikes or only those sporty ones? Just wondering
i jus watched your 6 stair set!!!. your a gangster girl
Good Job!
Que guay muchas gracias!!
nicely put :-)
I had some big metal ones, should have kept them they weren't half as loud as these plastic ones, and you could get rare turn of speed on them.
ah damn, why did you get rid of them? Though I have to say, I rode metal ones at the weekend and they were noisy too
Not sure probably money at the time, or to sweeten a bike deal. Anyway they used to be the cycling clubs and were made by one of the members who was an engineer. He should have made them commercially as you'd get up to some mental speeds, apart from the guy who fell off on a chrome plated bike and disappeared in a shower of sparks, that was funny. He'd been disqualified from a time trial allegedly for grabbing the handle on the back of a caravan and hitching a lift, bit of a character.
I agree I have both and the metal ones are more quiet
Gear ratio ?
I have these and I need you to answer a question about them if you would please - I have pretty much the same setup as you - fixed gear, same gear ratio or possibly even slightly easier, same rollers; when I get on the bike it's so hard to get the pedals turning it takes quite a lot of effort; it looks easy for you here - so my question is how much force do you need to pedal with? for me it feels like I'm just starting off every pedal stroke - is there something wrong with my rollers or am I just being weak? once you get going does it feel like you are cycling normally with the momentum you have cycling outside, or are you constantly cycling hard just to keep it going?
set your roller in a door frame, you can grab onto it to get going
me i put on foot in, sit on the saddle, put the other foot in
then i start pedaling and after 3-4 stroke i let go of the door frame
@@samskisamsonof it turned out that I just needed to pump up my tyres more! sounds obvious but easy to overlook.
Hey Juliet, looks nice, Would you recommand to systematically use a rugh below the roller ? Txs
I find something like a yoga mat or even camping mat works well
Hi, how noisy are these rollers comparing to Tracx "Blue" trainers?
I don't know, sorry, I haven't used those ones
so pretty
You're a champ Juliet*
thanks
I see you on GCN channel 😉
You have to change the tires to make a lot of noise
Great thats my next step to get out of the doorway, tried on a chair........crashed 😜
Wow! I'd forgotten how noisy rollers are.
Which model Tacx is this you have? I am thinking about buying the Galaxia. Any views? Thanks.
Bill Evans it’s the Galaxia. Had these rollers ages, still going strong. Solidly built, nice to use
Excellent! Thanks Juliet. Just ordered a set from Wiggle. Looking forward to getting on them.
now, just out of curiosity, how do you unclip prior to stopping if you were riding a track bike under normal circumstances? I ride geared road bikes so I'm just baffled as to how people unclip while coming to a stop (not on a trainer) when riding a fixed gear track bike. :) you did well. I tried riding a friend's track bike and the whole fixed gear just throws me off.. I was able to ride it, just felt out of my element.
rico de guzman when your dominant foot comes to the front you just unclip the back one and put it on the floor. When you do this you're generally already going slow enough that you can just use your legs to stop the pedals turning anymore. It's really easy to do actually.
And riding fixed might feel strange at first but it doesn't take long to get used to it.
thanks for explaining it. Might give it a try. I've heard from some people that they feel more connected to the bike. That's how I feel when I made the transition to cleats 5 years ago. :)
is this only possible with a trackbike? or do people also use Mountian/cross country bikes on rollers?
any kind of bike, but smooth tires best
Great tutorial - how long did it take you to feel confident letting go of the wall? Also, do you use drops or only stay on top of the bars? And... what is the best cadence for you? Cheers!
Lee Vickers Hi Lee!
It didn't take long at all, the main thing is you have to have the confidence that you can do it, it's all in the head!
I now use the drops sometimes when I'm doing a warm up but I spend the majority of the time on the tops. On the tops is definitely easier.
My natural cadence is about 85
Juliet Elliott cool thanks. Will try the hood position for now, drops make it twitchy. Aiming for 80-90rpm which is about 22mph on my 92" gear. I think I need to conquer my fear, I'm an mtber but I'm still terrified of the rollers! Thanks for the advice.
thanks
Hey! Great video! Question for you: About the noise/vibrations, if we are in an appartment, is it bad?
simclap its pretty loud but you can get a mat to put under if that dampens the sound. The best thing would be just to avoid using it and antisocial times. It's no worse than a washing machine on a spin cycle
Bars and size??? Thank ya!
these are some cheap Deda bars, 38cm wide
Thank you!
Isn't it a good idea to put a mattress on the left just in case? :p
hahah, well you could but hopefully you wouldn't need it!
Mattress good idea when you get tired and need a lay down
No morning ???
Are rollers harder with a single gear track bike?
Imo track bike is much easier than a geared bike

Your awesome sweetheart ! 😉
어떤거타세요?
Those rollers are super loud!!
yeah, they are!
Hi Juliet is that a fixie. Likin the tats
Yes, track bikes have fixed gears
i dont have the balls for that
+Boom Drifts no balls required!
Nether does she!
i will never figure it out
sooo noisy
on peut faire aussi bien sans tatouage sur les bras...
So noisy they are... Not a solution for me to do some cardio
add grease to bearings, put the trainer on a slim carpet ...
