How to ride rollers on a track bike - getting started

  • In this video, I show you how to get on to rollers and get started.If you're new to riding rollers, it's easiest if you put them next to a wall or in a doorway so that you can rest an elbow or a shoulder against something.
    Riding rollers is a great way of warming up for a race and is a good way of learning to pedal smoothly. Remember to look ahead, rather than staring down at your front wheel!

    After falling over once and nearly hitting my head on the work bench I started to wear my helmet during sessions. I also moved everything out of my way and stopped showing off during partys while I was drunk.

    Take a tip from a veteran roller-user...
    Put maximum pressure in your tyres (or a bit more if you dare) and have the support on the side you get on the bike. That way, you can get on the bike, in the saddle, peddling and properly balanced before letting go of the support, and it feels more natural. Getting off is also safer and easier.

    Thanks for showing us how to get on with just one wall. I see so many videos of folks doing this in a doorway; but I don't have a doorway I can keep my rollers across. Mine will be in the basement with one pole on the right (as you have a wall). I'm a little apprehensive about using my clip in cleats as this will be my first time (rollers will be delivered in a few days). Getting off looks like falling and catching yourself with your left foot. I think I can deal with that. Thanks again.

    • @JulietElliottsChannel
      @JulietElliottsChannel  7 років тому

    • @thetedster7812
      @thetedster7812 7 років тому

      Not sure probably money at the time, or to sweeten a bike deal. Anyway they used to be the cycling clubs and were made by one of the members who was an engineer. He should have made them commercially as you'd get up to some mental speeds, apart from the guy who fell off on a chrome plated bike and disappeared in a shower of sparks, that was funny. He'd been disqualified from a time trial allegedly for grabbing the handle on the back of a caravan and hitching a lift, bit of a character.

    Gear ratio ?

  • @user-ot1dv6ri4f
    @user-ot1dv6ri4f 4 роки тому

    I have these and I need you to answer a question about them if you would please - I have pretty much the same setup as you - fixed gear, same gear ratio or possibly even slightly easier, same rollers; when I get on the bike it's so hard to get the pedals turning it takes quite a lot of effort; it looks easy for you here - so my question is how much force do you need to pedal with? for me it feels like I'm just starting off every pedal stroke - is there something wrong with my rollers or am I just being weak? once you get going does it feel like you are cycling normally with the momentum you have cycling outside, or are you constantly cycling hard just to keep it going?

    • @samskisamsonof
      @samskisamsonof 4 роки тому

      set your roller in a door frame, you can grab onto it to get going
      me i put on foot in, sit on the saddle, put the other foot in
      then i start pedaling and after 3-4 stroke i let go of the door frame

    now, just out of curiosity, how do you unclip prior to stopping if you were riding a track bike under normal circumstances? I ride geared road bikes so I'm just baffled as to how people unclip while coming to a stop (not on a trainer) when riding a fixed gear track bike. :) you did well. I tried riding a friend's track bike and the whole fixed gear just throws me off.. I was able to ride it, just felt out of my element.

    • @JulietElliottsChannel
      @JulietElliottsChannel  8 років тому +1

      rico de guzman when your dominant foot comes to the front you just unclip the back one and put it on the floor. When you do this you're generally already going slow enough that you can just use your legs to stop the pedals turning anymore. It's really easy to do actually.
      And riding fixed might feel strange at first but it doesn't take long to get used to it.

    • @ricodeguzman5338
      @ricodeguzman5338 8 років тому

      thanks for explaining it. Might give it a try. I've heard from some people that they feel more connected to the bike. That's how I feel when I made the transition to cleats 5 years ago. :)

    Great tutorial - how long did it take you to feel confident letting go of the wall? Also, do you use drops or only stay on top of the bars? And... what is the best cadence for you? Cheers!

    • @JulietElliottsChannel
      @JulietElliottsChannel  8 років тому +1

      Lee Vickers Hi Lee!
      It didn't take long at all, the main thing is you have to have the confidence that you can do it, it's all in the head!
      I now use the drops sometimes when I'm doing a warm up but I spend the majority of the time on the tops. On the tops is definitely easier.
      My natural cadence is about 85

    • @LeeVickers
      @LeeVickers 8 років тому +1

      Juliet Elliott cool thanks. Will try the hood position for now, drops make it twitchy. Aiming for 80-90rpm which is about 22mph on my 92" gear. I think I need to conquer my fear, I'm an mtber but I'm still terrified of the rollers! Thanks for the advice.
